FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

Zettie Marie Loftin (Robinson) celebrated her 100th birthday on 16 Dec 2010.  I was there at Abernethy Laurels to join Marie and the family for the festive and blessed occasion.  Be sure to check out the photos from Marie's page.

Lois Virginia Loftin (Mundy) celebrated her 102nd birthday on 13 Dec 2010.  Congratulations Lois for such a long and blessed life.  Lois was at Marie's 100th Birthday party on Saturday, 11 Dec 2010.

I was pleasantly surprised this month to get an email from Phil Lofting in the United Kingdom.  Phil is a software engineer who lives in Hastings, East Sussex, ENGLAND and works in London.  Since the progenitor of the Loftin family, Leonard Loftin, came from England, it was great to make a connection with one of the Loftin/Lofting "cousins" over there who also has an interest in genealogy.  Phil is also in the process of taking the DNA test through Family Tree DNA.  It'll be interesting to see his results.  In the email I received from Phil, he said, "Over the last few years I have conducted a one-name study of all Loftings (and UK-born Loftins) as we all seem to be descended from either John or his nephew Walter, who emigrated to the UK as well to work with John.  I have not found a link from 'my line' to 'your' Loftin who left England for the US...not to say there is no link though".  Keep checking back for updates.

Harry Loftin, son of Harry Guy Loftin (b. 1904), contacted me about the death of his sister, Norma Loftin Morrison.  The obituary information about Norma was added to Harry Guy Loftin's page.  Our condolences to this branch of our Loftin family.

My daughter-in-law Leslie Robinson Loftin's maternal grandparents (Frank & Vera Cline Caldwell) were both killed on Thursday, December 23, 2010 in a car accident on Hwy 16 north of Christian Tours.  Our condolences to the Caldwell family.

I found a copy of William Alexander Loftin's Death Certificate and added a copy of it to his webpage.

I also found a copy of Frances Elizabeth Fisher Loftin's Death Certificate.  Franky (or Elizabeth) was the wife of James Franklin Loftin and mother of William Alexander Loftin.

Glenn & Dot Robinson Martin shared a photo with me of her mother, Zettie Marie Loftin, and all of her siblings that was taken prior to 1944.  The photo included Marie, Lois Virginia Loftin, Glenn Lee Loftin, William Ray Loftin, Frances Bernice Loftin, Coyte James Loftin, Foy Max Loftin and Helen Josephine Loftin

(Babst/Bobst, Douglas, Faber, Fulbright, Hefner, Meinhert, Miller, Pabst/Bobst, Robinson)

I added a photo of the road sign from the intersection of Goble Drive and Buffalo Shoals Road in Catawba County, NC, to the Goble Descendancy Page.  Carolyn and I also stumbled across several cotton fields in Iredell County and I couldn't help but stop and take some photos.  My Mom, Willie Goble Loftin, has frequently told me how her family worked in the cotton fields when she was little and they were living in Iredell & Catawba Counties.

I received an email from Carole Dodenhoff with some additional information about Barbara Ann Miller and I added the information to Barbara's page - including her death certificate that lists her mother as Lizzie Woodring.

I did a video interview with Lois Loftin Mundy and have added the 12-Part interview to her web page.

Phyllis White Mills shared some great photos with me of her mother, Helen Josephine Loftin Mills, and her sisters (Lois, Marie and Bernice).  There is also a great photo of Helen and her father, Lee Loftin.  If you've not already seen these, you should really check them out.  Thanks Phyllis.

FAMILY: Setzer
(Aderholdt, Barringer, Bovey, Bushart, Deal, Heavner, Herman, Ikert, Miller, Motz, Rankin,
Witherspoon)

Eric Barringer of VA contacted me earlier this summer via email.  Eric inherited numerous historical document from his grandfather connected to the Barringer family.  Eric graciously shared those numerous documents from as early as 1779 with me.

Included in these Barringer documents were three letters written by Reuben Setser/Setzer and his wife, Sophronia, during the Civil War.  This is where I chose to start sharing the numerous documents with you.  Reuben was a brother of Jacob Lanier "Sawmill Jake" Setzer and the Grand-Uncle of my grandmother, Ida Setzer Loftin.  I created a page for Reuben Setser that includes the letters, census documents, and additional information.

A new webpage was created for David Barringer (b. 1794) - the son of Mathias Barringer and Catherine Hass.  The work on this page is still on-going, because I still have additional documents to add when I find the time.  There are a few letters on this page.

Thanks SO MUCH, Eric!

FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

Deanie Herman Hilton gave me access to the photos of her mother, Daisy Pearl Loftin Herman, a year or so ago.  There was one photo that I scanned where Deanie and I did not recognize any of the individuals.  I stumbled across the scan this month and decided it was the children of Alonzo Loftin.  I visited Aunt Frances Loftin Cook who confirmed that the photo was Roy & Mae Loftin, Thelma Loftin, Elma Loftin, Daisy Pearl Loftin and Allie Loftin.  The photo was added to each of their webpages.  I emailed a copy of the photo to Roy & Mae's daughter, Yvonne Loftin Bryson, who confirmed that it was her Dad & Mom, and that it was the youngest photo she had ever seen of her mother.  What a wonderful find.

I visited with Aunt Frances Loftin Cook toward the end of July to share some photos with her of Miles & Effie Lowrance Setzer (her mother's brother).  While I was there I did four short videos of Frances talking about her parents, siblings, aunts & uncles, and how she met her husband, Alvin Cook.

Suzzette Yandle at yandles2@charter.net contacted me with Betsy Salina Beatty's lineage.  It was added to the Beatty Family Descendancy page.

I worked extensively adding additional names and information to the Lomax Family Descendancy page.  Mary Martha Lomax was the wife of Manley Wilson Cranford, Sr. - their daughter, Laura Cranford, married William Alexander Loftin.  There were photos of Lillie Lomax and John Haven Lomax (children of William Nelson Lomax and Mary Ann Russell) in the photo of Cordie Loftin Wilson, but as of yet I've not been able to tie Mary Martha Lomax Cranford directly to the other Lomaxs in the area.

A page was created for William Lomax (1764 - 1835).

FAMILY: Setzer
(Aderholdt, Barringer, Bovey, Bushart, Deal, Heavner, Herman, Ikert, Miller, Motz, Rankin,

Additional information was added to the Pettigrew Family Descendancy page as well as the Pettigrew Family History page.  [Family Link: Patrick Sylvanus Setzer married Margaret Elizabeth Witherspoon; Margaret's G-G-Grandfather, John Witherspoon (1725), married Martha Pettigrew, daughter of James "the Immigrant" Pettigrew]

FAMILY: Goble
(Babst/Bobst, Douglas, Faber, Fulbright, Hefner, Meinhert, Miller, Pabst/Bobst, Robinson)

Additional information has been added to the Fink and Leslie Family Descendancy pages.

Don Anderson, from Seattle, Washington, contacted me via email with some great photos of Hiram Lewis Hamilton and his wife, Arminda Parish Hamilton.  Hiram Hamilton was a son of Thomas Cleophas Hamilton (b. 1784).  Don also share a photo of Thomas' grave marker.  You can contact Don at d0randers@gmail.com .

I've spent a bit of time this month researching the Fink Family and have updated the Fink Family Descendancy Page as well as the page on Daniel Fink (b. 1806).  We knew Daniel had been married twice - both wives being names Elizabeth.  It seems the first was was Elizabeth Broyer and the second wife was Elizabeth M. Eller (the widow of Silas Abel Benfield).  I've also discovered that most researchers list Rosina/Rosanna Carriker as the mother of Daniel Fink (1806).

A new page was created for Jacob Daniel Fink, son of David Alexander Fink & Margaret Baker, and grandson of Daniel Fink & Elizabeth Broyer.

A death certificate has been found for Sarah Caroline Fink (Leslie/Lasley) which gives her date of birth and death, as well as her mother's last name.

The 1910 Census was added to Sophia Fink's (Mrs. Jules Hall) page.

A new webpage was created for Margaret Elizabeth Susana Fink (b. 14 Jun 1871), Lucas Monroe Fink (b. 21 Dec 1875), John David Fink (b. 16 Jan 1880) and Ellen Katherine Fink (b. 14 Jun 1884), children of David Alexander Fink (1832) and Margaret Baker.

A page was created of James Clarence Fink (1858), son of Moses Daniel Fink (1836).  A page was also created for James' son, Eugene Donald Fink (1892).

Additional information was added to Samuel C. M. Fink's page (b. 1868), including his death certificate and several census which real loads more about this family.  A page was also created for his son, Robert Henry Fink (1908) and daughter Margaret Eloise Fink (1911).

Pages were created for Emma Catherine Fink (1870), Oder "Otis" Elmer Fink (1875) and John Theophalus Fink (1873) - children of Jacob Henry Fink (1840) and Catherine Martin.  A page was also created for Oder Elmer Fink's son, William Oscar Fink (1899).  A page was created for Helen Virginia Fink (Lance) (1916), daughter of John Theophalus Fink and Carrie Wilhelm Colvert.

A page was created for James Q. Leslie (1807), the father of Nancy Caroline Leslie.

A page was created for Hamilton, Mary  (1751 - 1821), daughter of Ninian Hamilton (1717)

The Loftin Family Reunion occurred on Sunday, May 16, 2010.  There were approximately 100 in attendance at the 2010 Reunion.  I tried to take as many photos as possible of the various families in attendance.  They are posted on the Loftin Family Reunion Page.

Harry Guy Loftin, Jr., from Statesville (and his wife, Pat), were at the 2010 Family Reunion.  It was nice to meet Harry & Pat and get a chance to talk with this cousin from another branch of the Loftin Family.  Harry shared with me lots of photos and information on his branch of the family from Thomas Smith Loftin (1863 - 1947).  There's a great photo of Thomas from around 1885 as well as a photo of Thomas and his family that must have been taken around 1910.  Photos and information was also added to pages for Thomas' children, including: Lillie May Loftin, Stokes Mills Loftin, Thomas Percy Loftin, Foy Tate Loftin, David Moose Loftin, Grover Exell Loftin, John Havene Loftin, Robert Fred "Jack" Loftin and Mary Emma Loftin.  Harry Jr. also had lots of information on his dad (and Thomas' son), Harry Guy Loftin, Sr.  There was even a Troutman High School Yearbook from 1926, when Harry Guy Sr. graduated high school.  A special thanks to Harry Jr. for sharing all of this wonderful data and photos with the rest of the family.  You can contact Harry Guy Loftin, Jr. at hloftinjr@roadrunner.com .

A webpage was created for Loftin, Sarah Jane  (1867 - 1935), the sister of Thomas Smith Loftin and daughter of Edmund Loftin.  Thanks to Harry Guy Loftin, Jr. for the photo of Sarah Jane Loftin Mills.

FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

I use the computer program Family Tree Maker to record the data collected concerning the various ancestors in our family.  The program has an interesting link feature that lets you connect to Ancestry.com for the various individuals in the files and will also take you to a page at Ancestry called, "Famous People Related to Your Ancestor".  Within the past few years I had learned that there was a connection to the Loftin family and 1st President George Washington through the Lanier lineage.  It seems that the Loftin family also has an ancestry connection to 9th President, William Henry Harrison, and his grandson & 23 President, Benjamin Harrison, through the same Lanier lineage.  Even though the Harrisons are not direct ancestors, they were "cousins" of our various ancestors.  I looked at several sources to research the validity of this lineage and it seems authentic.

I spent quite a bit of time this month researching our celebrity relatives through Ancesty.com and other internet sites.

A new page was created for Notable Ancestors & Relatives.  These individuals, although no direct ancestry, do indeed appear to be distant cousins.

A new family page was created for George Washington, showing the Loftin connection through the Lanier Lineage.  John Loftin's father-in-law, Sampson Lanier Jr., appears to be 4th cousins with the "Father of our Country".

Ancestry.com research shows that William Alexander Loftin was the 11th cousin to film star Judy Gardland, best known for her role in the 1939 MGM film, "The Wizard of Oz".  A new page was created to show that relationship.

The Loftins connect to Sir Isaac Newton through the Lanier & Washington family lineage.  Sampson Lanier Sr. and Sir Isaac Newton would have been 8th cousins 1 generation removed.

The Loftins connect to actor Laurence Olivier through the Lanier & Washington family lineage.  A page was created for the famed actor who would have been 14th cousins with Alonzo Lester Loftin.

The Loftins connect to noted mystery authoress Agatha Christie through the Sherrill Family lineage.  A page was created for Agatha Christie.

The Family Surnames page has been updated with additional names and links.

FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

I created a page entitled Loftin Locations a "long" time ago, but forgot to feature it on any page, or list it on the "Where to Find 'Em" page.  So, this month it is available for all to see.  It highlights streets, roads, lanes, drives, lakes, etc. with that are attached to the Loftin name.

There's a new program on TV on Friday nights on NBC (36) called "Who Do You Think You Are".  The first episode dealt with actress Sarah Jessica Parker exploring her ancestry - all the way back to the 1600s.  It started me thinking about just how long the Loftins have lived in this country.  Leonard Loftin/Laughton arrived in Virginia in the early 1630s - less than 15 years after the Pilgrims arrived on the Mayflower in Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts.  As a result of this, I decided to change the Homepage to reflect this wonderful heritage.

FAMILY: Setzer
(Aderholdt, Barringer, Bovey, Bushart, Deal, Heavner, Herman, Ikert, Miller, Motz, Rankin,
Witherspoon)

A new web page was created for John Carlton "Sandy Yard" Setzer (b. 1874).  John was the son of Henry Theodore Setzer (b. 1846).  There are numberous photos of John, his wife Allie Janette Setzer, and their children.  Thanks to Mary Harbinson for the photos.

I received an thoughtful email from Lois Carman who shared information on the lineage of Elizabeth "Betsy" Mahalya Setzer (daughter of Jacob "Sawmill Jake" Lanier Setzer and Delila Deal).  This Betsy was also a sister to Patrick Sylvanus Setzer.  You can contact Lois at loiscarman28@yahoo.com if you have more information you'd like to share with her.  Also, contact me.  I'd love to have more information on this branch of the Setzer family - especially photos.

A new web page was created for Jacob Setzer (1828 - 1890).  Jacob was the son of Daniel Setzer and Polly Wike.  He was the nephew of Jacob Lanier Setzer.

A new web page was created for Daniel Setzer (1790 - 1854), the brother of Jacob Lanier Setzer and son of John Setzer (1754 - 1822)

A new webpage was created entitled Setzer Locations.  It highlights streets and roads around the world bearing the Setzer name.

I had created pages for most of Patrick Sylvanus Setzer & Margaret Witherspoon's children toward the end of 2009, but had failed to put links from their name on the Setzer Descendancy page until this month.  Those pages include Jacob Eli Setzer, Miles Ernest Setzer, John Marion Setzer, Sallie Ann Mae Setzer, Elizabeth Pearl Setzer and Daisy McNeill Setzer.  There is also a page for Patrick & Margaret's daughter, Ida Lillian Setzer (my Grandmother).

Sharon Sigmon Whisnant (Granddaughter of Daisy McNeill Setzer & Great-Granddaughter of Patrick Sylvanus Setzer) contacted me and gave me the data for her lineage.  She descends from John Patrick Sigmon, the oldest son of Daisy McNeil Setzer and Leslie Burnette Sigmon.  John Patrick's lineage was added to the Setzer Descendancy page.

A photo of Laura Ada Huit Setzer (wife of Henry Theodore Setzer) was added to Henry's webpage.  There are also new photos of their children Minnie Setzer Lee, Emma C. Setzer Beal and Ada Laura Setzer Murray.  There is also a death certificate for son Hoyle Columbus Setzer, Sr.  There are also new descendancies from Henry and Laura added to the Setzer Descendancy page.

New photos were added to the John Carlton Setzer (b.1894) page, including a new photo of John Carlton Setzer, two new photos of John and Allie, and two new photos of a much older Allie with her children.

I received a pleasant email from Saundra Sigmon Smith, daughter of Carlos Emanuel Sigmon, granddaughter of Elizabeth Pearl Setzer, and great-granddaughter of Patrick Sylvanus Setzer & Margaret Witherspoon.  Saundra shared her lineage from Carlos Sigmon & Mary Reid, including children and grandchildren.

Most of my emails are usually courteous and thoughtful.  I did get one recently, however, that "raked me over the coals" for displaying a census listing another child in the family after the father had died during the Civil War and questioning the origin of the child (who was listed as a daughter).  Genealogy is the study of family "history".  Sometimes that history is good, and sometimes it's not.  It frequently includes stories about unwed mothers, suicide, alcohol abuse, murder, hangings, disease and many other sad events in the lives of the family.  We learn to love and embrace our ancestors - not because they were perfect - but simply because they were our forbearers.
