Frances Bernice Loftin was the sixth child born to Arthur Lee Loftin and Alice Josephine Gilleland.  Bernice was born 21 Oct 1916 in Catawba County, NC.

The 1920 Census shows Lee and Josie living in the Catawba Township of Catawba County.  They had seven children: Lois V. (Virginia) age 11, Zettie M. (Marie) age 9, Glenn L. (Lee) age7, William R. (Ray) age 5, Frances B. (Bernice) age 3 2/12, Coyte J. (James) age 1 6/12 and Willard G. (Gilleland) 4/12.  Lee was 34 and Josie was 28.  Glenn (spelled "Gleene" on the Census) was misidentified as a "daughter".

The 1930 Census shows Lee Loftin living in the Catawba Township of Catawba County near his brother Alonzo.  Lee is show on the Census as being widowed and 44 years old.  He has six children at home: Glenn age 17, Ray age 15, Bernice age 13, Coyte age 11, Foy age 8 and Helen age 3.

Bernice's Obituary

Francis Bernice Loftin Gilmer, 95, of Newton, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. Born Oct. 21, 1916, in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Josephine Gilleland Loftin. Mrs. Gilmer was a member of North Newton Baptist Church, where she was a member of the prayer circle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond E. Gilmer; step-mother, Bertha Kale Loftin; brothers, Glen Loftin, Ray Loftin, Foy Loftin, Willard Loftin, and Coyte Loftin; and one step-sister, Wilma Moss; and one grandchild. Survivors include her sons, Larry E. Gilmer and wife, Barbara Ann, of Maiden and Rodney M. Gilmer and wife, Pat, of Mt. Morris, Mich.; daughter, Gail Hipkins and husband, Jim, of Asheville; daughter-in-law, Barbara Jean Dingman Gilmer, of Taylorsville; sisters, Lois Mundy, of Catawba, Marie Robinson, of Newton, and Helen White, of Statesville; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, in the Chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Conover. The Rev. Lloyd King will officiate and burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Drum Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658 or Salvation Army, P.O. Box 67, Hickory, NC 28603. The Gilmer family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Conover.
