The Loftin Family Reunion started as a yearly
birthday dinner for Ida Lillian Setzer Loftin, wife of Alonzo
Lester Loftin, who was born 25 Apr 1884. When all their

After Ida's death on 25 Dec 1964, her
granddaughter, Peggy Loftin Brotherton, decided it would be
wonderful to continue the yearly family get-together and thus
the Loftin Family Reunion (as we know it today) was born.
Since most of the Loftins had tents at the Balls Creek
Campground, the Reunion was held there for many years - beside
of the Arbor.
For convenience, the Reunion was eventually
moved to Center Methodist Church - the home church of several of
the Loftin ancestors.
An additional move occurred when the Loftin Reunion was moved to
Catawba Methodist Church.
On May 20, 2007, members of the Loftin Family
met again for the Loftin Reunion at Catawba Methodist Church.

Barry asked family members to share stories
about their parents, grandparents, aunts & uncle. There
were some funny stories as well as some tender touching stories.
Kevin shared how
when he was little he's go and visit his grandmother, Verdie
Lee. They'd watch Carol Burnett & Johnny Carson. If
he's stay overnight with her, she's leave chocolate for him on
his pillow at night. Years later as he was taking a cruise
and saw chocolates left on the pillows of his bed in his ship's
cabin, he remembered how his grandmother lovingly left chocolate
on his pillow at night when he was a child. When he got
back home he told her what had happened and how he had
remembered the chocolate she had left on his pillow. She
said, "Kevin, that wasn't chocolate I left on your pillow - it
was Ex-Lax - to be sure you were 'regular'!"
When Nannie first
married Wade Martin they moved to Gastonia. In time they eventually moved
to Newton into a large two-story, white-frame
house on North College Avenue, just two blocks up from the court
square, beyond the State Theatre. They lived there for thirty
years and the upstairs rooms became "Martin’s Boarding House".
The boarding house was soon filled with tenants including a
baseball team who gave the Martin family nicknames.
Alan told about
visiting with his grandmother, Thelma, and how he and his
siblings would frequently stay over night. He said, "...
she'd always read her Bible at night before she'd go to bed".
He also recounted how she opened a savings account for
him and his sisters in the bank and that each year she'd put
money in the bank for them on their birthdays.
Peggy recounted how
she remembers sitting on her daddy's lap when she was little -
about four years of age - when her grandfather William Alexander
Loftin died.
As Peggy sat on her daddy's lap, a red bird flew into
the window, then flew off and someone said "there goes Grandpa
Alec flying off to heaven."
Peggy said that she supposed that was the reason that
she liked red-birds so much.
Elaine said she
remembered her grandmother visiting their family when she was
little. "She'd come over at least once a week." Ida
would come and spend a few days with them when her father,
Glenn, was killing a hog and would frequently do the "chores"
that Elaine and her sisters were suppose to do.
John shared how his grandmother, Nannie, was
frequently described as "prim and proper" by those who knew her.
After the death of Nannie's mother, Cornelia, from pneumonia,
the children would frequently be sent to grandparent's homes to
stay. Nannie had commented to John that as a result, she
and her sister, Lillie, were raised by the Lowrances (Henry &
Sarah), while younger sisters Floye and Verdie Lee were raised
by the Loftins (Alec & Laura). Nannie had told John that "Floye
and Verdie Lee knew how to have fun because they had been raised
by the Loftins."
John also commented that because the Loftin
family was so big, that everyone from Newton to the Catawba
River were kin.
Lois, age 100,
recounted how she had learned to drive using her father's Model
A car. She also said that she had just quit driving at the
age of 98.
Lois said that when she was a little girl the family
attended Center Methodist Church. The church had two doors
on the two sides of the church - one for the men and one for the
women. She also said that when people entered the church
that the men would sit together on the left side of the church
while the women would sit on the right side.
Pam shared with the group how her husband,
Spencer Sigmon, comes from the
Adam Sherrill lineage and so do
the Loftins (from
James Loftin & Susanna Sherrill).
Pam teased Spencer about being her "cousin".
The Loftin family gathered together on
Sunday, May 16th, 2010, in the Family Life Center of the Catawba
Methodist Church for the yearly family reunion. There was
approximately 100 in attendance at the yearly event. Those
in attendance represented the descendants of William Alexander
Loftin and Laura Rossie Cranford from their children, Alonzo
Lester Loftin, Arthur Lee Loftin and Cord Loftin Wilson.
There was a large
family meal followed by a time to recognize
those in the family who were (or would be) 100 years old in
2010.
