The 1880 Census for Boone County, Iowa, shows Daniel and Melissa living in Jackson Township with six children. The Census indicates that Daniel was born in Indiana and both of his parents were born in Iowa. The Census also shows that Melissa was born in Indiana. The 1900 Iowa Census shows some changes for (Michael) Daniel & Melissa. The family was living in Washington Township of Story County. Daniel's age was 66 and his occupation was listed as a "Day Man". The Census further states that he had worked every month for the entire year. Son Grant is living with the family and is 35 years old. The Census indicates that Grant was married, but no indication of where his wife was. Grant's occupation was listed as "Day Laborer" and he had been unemployed for 3 months out of the year. We further learn that Daniel & Melissa own a house (as opposed to a farm) and that it is mortgaged. Daughter Hattie, age 18, was also still living with her parents. Everyone listed on the Census could read, write and speak English. As opposed to the 1880 Census, the 1900 Census states that Daniel's father (Michael Daniel Deal) was born in Germany and his mother (Mary M.
