The Hamilton Family   Name Origin: Scottland   (Left) Scottish Coat of Arms   Scotland with its rugged terrain and rich ancestry was the beginning of the ancient family tree of the Hamilton family.  In Scotland, hereditary surnames were adopted according to fairly general rules and during the late Middle Ages, names that were derived from localities became increasingly widespread.  Local names originally denoted the proprietorship of the village or estate.  The Hamilton family originally lived in the village of Hamilton or Hameldune near Barkby in the county of Leicestershire, before migrating to Scotland.  It is so called from the Old English elements hamel, which means blunt, flat-topped, or crooked, and dun, which means hill.
