Emmy's mother, Dovey, died sometime between 1860 and 1870.  After her death, Edmund married Mary Reynolds who was 15 years younger than him.

Emmy married Thomas Jefferson Howell, who (according to the 1870 Census) was seven years her junior, and by 1870 they were living in the Fallstown Township of Iredell County.  Emmy's sister, Ellen (age 25), was also living with them.  Emmy's age was listed as 28 and Jefferson was 21.  Jefferson's occupation is listed as "farm hand" and not "famer" indicating that they did not have a farm of their own at the time, but he was working on someone else's farm.  Jefferson could neither read nor write.
