Elgevia Goble

Born: 24 Nov 1928, Iredell County, NC

Elgevia Eggers was born on 24 Nov 1928 when Beulah Vernesta Johnson Goble gave birth to a set of twins that were nameed Elgevia and Estelene Goble - no middle names.  Matin Luther Goble was the father.  The twins were born in Iredell County, North Carolina.

Estelene died four months later on 26 Mar 1929.  She was buried at Sharon Lutheran Church.  A simple rock marked her grave.

Louise Loftin and Gevia were good friends and spent lots of time together.

Elgevia met Martin Russell Gray when her brother, Harlee, brought him home during a time that both men were on leave from the Army. Elgevia and Martin fell in love and were married on 25 Jul 1945 - shortly before he was discharged from the military.

Martin Russel Gray was born 08 Jun 1919 in Cycle, Wilkes County, North Carolina. He was the son of Martin Luther Gray (1879 - 1957) and Nancy Ann Stroud (1883 - 1939).

Engagement and Marriage Announcement as they appeared in THE LANDMARK Newspaper

Elgevia and Martin were married in Statesville, Iredell County, NC, by the Rev. J. H. Pressley. Witnesses listed on the Marriage License were: Mrs. Alean Goble (Gevia's sister-in-law), Mable L. Hamilton (of Statesville) and James W. Moses (of Statesville). According to their marriage license, he was 26 and she was 19. In actuality, she was only 16 (4 months before she turned 17).

Unfortunately, Gevia and Martin's marriage didn't last. They were divorced before 1949. Eventually Elgevia would marry William "Bill" Clifton Eggers, Jr. Martin Gray married Delta Yates on 28 Dec 1951 in Wilkes Co, NC. Delta was 11 years older than Martin.  Martin died 23 Feb 1993 in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, NC, at the age of 73.

Elgevia and Bill's marriage produced five children.
