*Burnell married Elizabeth Hill while

In Mar 1762, Lemuel Lanier was charged for "Boarding of
him and his wife 5 months"; he was released from
guardianship 23 Aug 1762. |

American
Revolutionary War Patriots |
|
Two of Sampson and Elizabeth's sons,
Burnell and Lewis, were
Patriot soldiers during the Revolutionary War - Burnell in North
Carolina and Lewis in Virginia. Burnell "testified
against a Preacher who was inciting people not to
fight." |
|
Lewis served as private in the Virginia militia and was promoted
to Captain. He was taken prisoner and held for nine months on a
prison ship. When released, he became acquainted with
General George Washington. Washington gave him a sword to
replace the one that had been lost and this sword was displayed
by family members for decades in Georgia. Lewis
moved to Duplin Co. about 1780 and served as a Captain of the
Duplin Militia. He moved to Anson Co. by 1790 and on to
Screven County GA by 1800. Lewis drew land in the 1832
Cherokee land Lottery as a Revolutionary War Soldier.
According to DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), Lewis
ended his career as a Major. |

|
Sampson, Jr. died about 1757 in Brunswick Co, Virginia. He
was approximately 45 years old. After his death, Elizabeth
married Cuthbert Smith on 25 Jul 1758. He was appointed
Guardian of Rebecca Lanier who was about 13 years old at the
time. |
|
Sampson Jr's brother, Lemuel Lanier, was
appointed Guardian of Burwell, Buckner,
Winifred, Martha and Ann Lanier - all
orphans of Samuel Lanier, Jr. The guardianship of
Burwell Lanier is very informative. In Mar 1762, 20 year old
Burwell and his wife Elizabeth were charged with 5
months boarding by his uncle Lemuel Lanier.
Burwell was released from guardianship on 23 Aug 1762. |
|
Sampson, Jr's brother William Lanier was appointed
guardian of Agnes and Lewis Lanier. |
