Angus Wilkinson

Born: 1764 Argyll, SCOTLAND
Died:  1829/30 Iredell County, NC

Angus Wilkinson appears to be the first of the Wilkinson clan to have emigrated from Scotland/Ireland between 1770 and 1795.  The name may have come from the Scottish name McQuilkan and then anglicized to Wilkinson.

Angus married Isabella (Unknown) prior to 1780.

Angus can be found on the 1800 and 1810 Census of Cumberland County, NC, and the 1820 Census of Iredell County, NC.  On the 1800 Census, he would have been approximately 36 years old

The 1800 Cumberland County, NC, Census shows the following information:
3 boys less than 10 years old and a male between the ages of 26 - 44 (that would be Angus, himself),
1 girl less than 10 years old and a female between the ages of 26 - 44 (Isabella)

The 1810 Cumberland County, NC, Census shows 2 males between the ages of 10 - 15, 1 male between the ages of 16 - 25 and 1 male over age 45 (Angus, himself).  There were 3 females whose ages were less than 10, 1 female between the ages of 16 - 25 and 1 female between 26 - 44 (Isabella).

By 1820, Angus had moved his family to Iredell County, NC.  Those living on the family farm were 2 males ages 16 - 26, 1 male whose age was greater than 45 (Angus), 2 females between the ages of 10 - 15, 1 female between the ages of 16 - 18, 1 female between the ages of 26 - 44, and 2 females who age was greater than 45 years old.

It is believed that Angus and Isabella Wilkinson had 6 children, although the birth dates and ages are not currently known.

Angus' son, Daniel, is listed on the 1860 Alexander County as being born in North Carolina, although tradition has held that son Malcolm was born in Scotland.

According to Gene Blair...
"In a note written in 1930 by John Patrick Wilkinson, Jr., writes to the effect that Angus came from Scotland and settled on the Cape Fear River near Wilmington, NC, and was a Captain on the river until he was no longer able.  He then moved to Iredell County, NC, and lived there until his death 'at a very old age'.  The note said he married an Irish girl and they had three girls: Polly, Nepsey and Betsey, and three boys, John, Mack and Daniel."

In Cumberland county in 1810, Angus resides near Neill and Phillip Wilkinson and could have been Neill's brother.  There are indications that Phillip was Neill's son.  There were several Wilkinson families in that area of NC and indications are that an extended family migrated about the same time.  He, Isabella, and their family were members of New Sterling Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Iredell County, NC.

There is an Angus Wilkinson family listed in the 1800 Robeson County, NC, Census, with two males and one female ages 45+ and 4 children aged 10 - 26.  I feel they're connected and possibly this older one is the father of our Angus, who was in Cumberland County, adjacent to Robeson County, at the same time.

Angus' son, Malcolm McConley Wilkinson, my great grandfather, "Mack" as he was known, was born about 1802 (Scotland) and died 29 August 1884 at Vilas, Watauga County, NC, and is buried alongside Ellen in the Howell Cemetery at Vilas, which is my Dugger/Wilkinson family cemetery.
