Samuel C. Fink was the first child born to Jacob Henry Fink and Catherine Martin.  Samuel was born 20 Mar 1868 in Iredell County, NC.

 

 

The 1870 Iredell County Census shows Jacob and Catherine Fink living in the Chambersburg Township (South) District of Iredell County.  They had 3 children: William S. A. Fink, age 3, Samuel C. M. Fink, age 2, and Emma C. Fink, age 2 months.

In 1880, Jacob Henry Fink & Catherine were raising a family of seven children in the Chambersburg Township of Iredell County, NC.  Jacob is listed on the Census as maimed, crippled or disabled - which could have been the result of an injury when he served in the Civil War.  The four oldest children were in school and there was an additional farm laborer, Samuel Fleming, living with the family.

The 1900 Census shows that Jacob and Catherine had moved to the Cool Spring Township of Iredell County.  Samuel was 32 years old and still living with his aging parents and working on the family farm.

The 1910 Rowan County Census shows Samuel & Maggie living in the Scotch-Irsiah Township.  Samuel's age was listed as 41 and Maggie as 29 - indicating that he was about 12 years older than her.  They had one child, Robert Henry Fink, who was born 23 Dec 1908.  There were also two boarders living with Samuel and Maggie.

Samuel Fink died 06 Apr 1919 in Woodleaf, Rowan County, NC, at the age of 51 from Chronic Bronchitis.  The Death Certificate lists his father as Henry Fink and mother as (Unknown) Martin.  The informant was Samuel's son-in-law, George L. Murr (husband of Emma C. Fink).  Samuel's occupation was listed as "Farmer".   His children were still very young at the time of his death.  Robert Henry Fink was only 10 and Margaret Eloise Fink was only 8.

After the death of Samuel, Margaret moved to Jerusalem Township of Davie County.  The 1920 Census for the county shows Maggie living there with her children, Robert (age 12) and Margaret (age 8), and her parents, Alex and Bettie Turner (both age 76).  Where many women during that period of time were homemakers, Margaret was forced to work in the Cotton Mill to provide for her family.
