Floyd Loftin Bitten By a Copperhead

Floyd, seven-year-old son of Mr. Stokes Loftin, was bitten on the hand by a copperhead snake Thursday while in the field with his father.  The day before Floyd and his dog tok a stump entirely out, scratching after a rat, and the little fellow was helping the dog scratch out another rat, so he thought, when both boy and dog were bitten.  He was taken to the home of Mr. A.L. Dar, near-by, while Messrs. Loftin and Darr went back with a mattock to see what had bitten them.  When they found a copperhead snake the little boy was rushed to Dr. J.S. Talley for treatment.

By 1930 Stokes had moved his family back to Iredell County, NC.

The 1930 Iredell County shows his parents, Thomas and Mary, still living in Fallstown Township.

Stokes and his brother Thomas were renting property nearby their parent and making their living as farmers.  Stokes and Vannie had six children - all sons: Floyd, Grady, Clifford, Walter, Wade and Harold.

Grady (Thomas) Loftin is Badly Slashed

Grady (Thomas) Loftin received a deep gash across his face Friday night.  Loftin was on Cooper Street when the police department was called, the officers finding that he had a deep knife wound extending from the left temple to the left corner of his mouth.  Loftin was removed to Long's hospital for treatment.
Loftin told the officers that an unidentified colored man inflicted the wound, which resulted in the loss of much blood.  The officers today had no clues as to the person who staged the cutting scrape.
