Webstats for the Family Genealogy Website

I started working on my family genealogy sometime after I retired from teaching in 2005.  In 2007, I created our "Family Genealogy" website as a place to share the photos and information that I collected.  The first page on this website in 2007 was the Loftin Family Descendancy.  I created it first so that I could share the information with family members at the upcoming Loftin Family Reunion in May of 2007.  Since then, the website has grown immensely.  There are now nearly 700 individual pages - pages that cover everything from family descendancies, to individual pages for various ancestors, to pages about the churches, schools and cities that our ancestors worked and lived in.  I used to publish the Top 20 pages that were visited on the website each month, but after a few years I discontinued that procedure.  I took sometime this morning to look at the current statistics - as well as the statistics for the website over the past nine years.  We've had over 2,000,000 hits on the various pages.  I'll share the top 30 pages and the number of hits for each of those pages.  This data changes daily but I thought you might find this interesting.

1. Due to numerous falls, increased difficulty with her oxygen level, problems with medication and short-term memory, we had to put Mom (Willie Goble Loftin) in Cardinal Healthcare in Lincolnton, NC. Mom actually asked to go herself, realizing that living by herself at her age was no longer an option. The transition has not always been good. She has her good days but she has her bad days, too. With doctors, nurses and other skilled health-care providers, we know that at least she's safe. Mom loves to talk and I believe that once she meets some people and makes some new friends, she'll adjust. If you wish, you can drop her a card at the following address: Willie Loftin, Cardinal Healthcare, Room 108, 931 N. Aspen St, Lincolnton, NC 28092.

2. I updated the page for J. Walter/Walton Douglas (1820 - 1880) and the Douglas Descendancy page with new information.

3. I created a new page for Jacob B. Hedrick (b. Abt. 1802) who was the biological father of Jacob Hedrick Goble (b. 1860) and grandfather of Martin Luther Goble (b. 1888). Jacob Hedrick was the son of John Hedrick and Louiza Lovi.

4. I've updated the page for Harriett Lucinda Goble (b. 1839) with additional information. Lucinda gave birth to Jacob Hedrick Goble (b. 1860) while she was still unmarried but married Andrew Jackson "Jack" Christopher (b. 1839) about 1865. I also updated the page for Jacob Hedrick Goble (b. 1860).

1. I got an email and phone call from Cheryl Dodd Howard from Richmond, Virginia. Cheryl pointed me to the Dodd family and some information I had not seen before. Dr. William Edward Dodd, Sr. (b.1869, d. 1940) was the first US Ambassador to Germany during the 1930s and the time of Adolf Hitler's rise to power.  Ambassador Dodd served in Berlin and even spoke with Hitler on several occasions. To learn more about Ambassador/Dr. William Edward Dodd, Sr., check out his new webpage. In addition to Ambassador Dodd, I've created a new webpage for his son, William Edward Dodd, Jr. (b.1905, d.1952).

2. I also created a new webpage for Martha Eccles Dodd (b. 1908, d. 1990) - daughter of Ambassador William Edward Dodd, Sr. (b.1869, d.1940). What makes Martha especially interesting is her "colorful" lifestyle in Berlin when her father was serving as ambassador. She also became a Soviet Union spy, with several code-names like "Liza" and "Juliet 2'.  Be sure to check it out.

1. I received a nice email from Billy Key in New Mexico. Billy is a cattle rancher but like many of us also enjoys family genealogy. Billy's Johnson ancestors came from Rowan/Iredell County, North Carolina, and he has done extensive research into the Johnson families in and around Iredell County. Using online copies of deeds, wills and other documents, he's also bumped into our Johnson family.

He says: "It is my feeling that your Robert Johnson (b. Abt. 1778) was a son of Adam Johnston...  In any case, there is an 1849 Iredell deed that certainly infers it. The same deed infers that E.K. Johnson was Robert’s brother. E.K. was born abt. 1791.  In the later censuses, he is enumerated in Iredell County as E. Kerr Johnson -1860, Elisha C. Johnson – 1870 and E. K. Johnson – 1880."  E.K. Johnson's full name seems to be Elisha Kerr Johnson.

1. At the 2016 Loftin Family Reunion, Willard White showed me the scrapbook that his late wife, Helen Josephine Loftin White, made during World War II. I've taken photos of all the pages and am in the process of adding them to a page I've created that is called 1940s Scrapbook. Be sure to check it out.

2. There were several newspaper articles in Helen Loftin White's 1940s WW2 Scrapbook about her brothers William Ray Loftin, Coyte James Loftin and Foy Max Loftin. Those have been added to the World War 2 page under the Loftin section.

3. Also coming from Helen Loftin White's Scrapbook was a marriage announcement for James Russell Boggs and Mary Olivia Cloninger. That lengthy newspaper clipping has been added to the page for his mother, Verdie Lee Loftin Boggs Copeny Yount.

4. A newspaper article about Helen Josephine Loftin finishing Newton Business School has been added to Helen's page.

1. I'm still working through the photos I took of Helen Josephine Loftin White's Scrapbook that she kept during WW2 in the 1940s. I've added information and a copy of the clipping about Osborne Denford Witherspoon (b. 1921) to the World War II page. "O.D." (as he was called by friends) was the son of Clarence Byron Witherspoon and Birdie Lee Mundy. He was the grandson of Leander Denford Lutz Witherspoon & Lydia Caroline Hawn Witherspoon. He was the Great Grandson of Miles Rankin Witherspoon & Sarah Elizabeth Aderholdt Witherspoon. He was the 2nd cousin of my dad, Sam William Loftin.

2. I also added information about Charles Ralph Setzer (b. 1920) to the World War II page as well as the Setzer Descendancy page.

3. I created a new page for John Logan Setzer, b. 1827. John Logan was married to Sarah Tabatha Coulter. He was the son of John Setzer (b. 1779); grandson of John Setzer (b. 1754) & Catherine Bushart Barringer; and great grandson of Jacob Setzer I (b. 1730) & Mary Magdalene Bovey. I came across a great photo of John Logan and Sarah Tabatha Setzer on Ancestry.com and added it to their page.

1. Well, I (Curtis Loftin) finally got around to giving you an update from my recent DNA Ethnicity Test through Ancestry.com. It has long been believed that the Loftins were English - but that might not be so. My DNA test results showed that I had less than 1% DNA ethnicity from Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales). To read the whole story, CLICK HERE.

2. After the death of my Aunt Frances Loftin Cook, her daughter Norma Stewart gave me a lot of Aunt Frances' photos. Since Frances inherited Grandma Ida Setzer Loftin's photos, I also got some of those. There was also a scrapbook of photos and information written by Frances. As I have time, I'll be going through those and adding the new ones to the website. Thanks Norma - I do appreciate the gift.

3. The Loftin Family Reunion was Sunday, 15 May 2016. With the death of so many of our older relatives, Willie Goble Loftin is now the oldest person to attend the family reunion. There were several deaths in the Loftin family since the 2015 Reunion - including Frances Loftin Cook and Vincent Edgar "Eddie" Bryson (husband of Yvonne Loftin Bryson). Be sure to check out the photos from this year's reunion at Loftin Family Reunion - then look for the "2016" link on the LEFT side of the page - or just scroll down to 2016.

4. I've added some new photos of Michael Lane Loftin (b. 1949) to his father's (Mike Whitener Loftin, b. 1916) webpage. Mikey died in 1956 in an automobile accident at the age of 15.

5. Willard White brought a scrapbook to the Loftin Family Reunion in May that his late wife, Helen Loftin White, created 70 years ago during WW2. There were newspaper clippings about young men and women who served in the military as well as engagement and marriage announcements. There were newspaper articles about Helen's three brothers, William Ray Loftin, Coyte James Loftin and Foy Max Loftin. Copies of those articles about Helen's brothers have been added to the World War 2 page under each of the brother's names. Be sure to check them out.

6. I found a newspaper clipping about the WWII military service and death of Willard Smith Beatty in the scrapbook made by Helen Loftin White during the 1940s. There was also a clipping about his brother, S.Sgt. Eugene Parks Beatty, Jr. Those clippings and additional information about Willard and Eugene has been added to the WWII page. Thanks to Willard White for sharing Helen's scrapbook with me.

7. I found a newspaper clipping about the WWII military service of Paul Edward Abernathy in the scrapbook made by Helen Loftin White during the 1940s. Paul was the husband of Betty Jo Loftin Abernathy. That clipping and additional information about Paul has been added to the WWII page.

1. I got a really nice email from Charles Wade Setzer II in Landstuhl, Germany. It's really funny because he descends from our NC "Setzers" - and our original ancestor, Johannes Adam Setzer, who came from Germany. I've added Charles' descendancy from David Setzer (b.1798) to the Setzer Family Descendancy page. I'm looking forward to future communication with Charles. This is what Charles had to say:

Hello distant relative!
I am so grateful for the website you have created and maintained. I have been so very curious about my Setzer family history. I am named after my father, Charles Wade Setzer. His father was Clyde Emery Setzer (1915), born to Fred Lee Setzer (1881), who was born to Thomas Theodore Setzer (1848), who was born to David Setzer (1798). That is the extent of what I have been able to learn from ancestry.com. I am thrilled to learn of the Setzer family originating from Heidelberg, which is just right up the A6 autobahn, from where I live! Now that I know this, I will have to return to Heidelberg with a new purpose and try to learn more about Johannes Adam Setzer.
I have had little to no information regarding the history, other than from ancestry.com, since my dad died when I was 12 and have only one other living Setzer relative that I know of. Perhaps we can have more communication regarding our family and if you have any questions for me, I would be happy to answer. Thanks again.
Very Respectfully

1. I had Mom's (Willie Aleen Goble Loftin) DNA tested at Ancestry.com. This particular test is a test for ethnicity. Mom's DNA was 75% Western European, followed by 6% Irish. There were a few surprises there, too. To read the whole story, CLICK HERE, and scroll down to the part that talks about Willie.

2. I attended the Loftin Family Reunion in May 2016. Willard White (of Statesville, NC) brought a scrapbook that his late wife, Helen Josephine Loftin White, made during the 1940s, full of newspaper clippings. Helen had collected clippings from local newspapers that told of her three brother's (Ray, Coyte and Foy's) involvement in WW2 - as well as many other young men in the Catawba, NC, area who were also serving in the military at the time. Helen also included Engagement Announcements for girls from the Catawba area. As I was perusing the scrapbook, I noticed a photo of my Mom's sister, Elgevia Goble Eggers. This particular clipping was an engagement announcement for Elgevia and PFC Martin Russell Gray (of Wilkes Co, NC). I knew that Elgevia had been married before she married William Clifton Eggers, Jr., but I knew none of the details. As a result of this particular newspaper clipping, I started a search on Ancestry.com and found an article from THE LANDMARK (a Statesville, NC, newspaper) announcing the marriage of Martin and Elgevia in 1945. As I continued to search, I also found a copy of their marriage license. As of today, I've still been unable to find marriage information about Elgevia and Bill Eggers. To check out these new additions, go to Elgevia Goble.

DNA: LOFTIN

1. I (Curtis Loftin) had my second DNA test in January of this year. Shortly thereafter I encouraged my wife, Carolyn Weeks Loftin, to take the test, too. This particular test, through Ancestry.com, is an Ethnicity DNA Test. As it turns out, Carolyn is 57% West European, 31% Great Britain, 5% Scandinavian, and a few others. To read the whole story, CLICK HERE, and scroll down to the part on Carolyn.

CONOVER – From his first job as a clerk for a local grocery store to volunteering for the Conover Fire Department as an 18-year-old to coaching the Bunker Hill 12-and-under softball team, serving the community highlights one of L. Eric Loftin’s passions.

“Public service or helping the people in some way, shape or form is something I’ve always had a desire for,” Loftin said.

Loftin, who served the Conover Police Department for 25 years, is set to serve the community with an even more visible role. The City of Conover promoted him to Chief of Police last week after the retirement of Steve Brewer.

Prior to the promotion, Loftin served as patrol lieutenant, patrol sergeant, criminal investigations sergeant, accreditation manager and training coordinator.

N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Kelly Stewart has known Loftin since they were both in their late teens. He said he considers Loftin’s promotion to Conover Police Chief as a “win-win” for both Loftin’s family and the city of Conover, adding that Loftin’s level of commitment to serving his community is second to none. Stewart recalled a time when he, his wife, Loftin and his wife all took a trip together to Asheville for a Marriage Conference. He said the trip was supposed to be a vacation for the four but noticed Loftin brought his laptop along to work on his term paper in their hotel room for a class he was taking at the time. “I thought to myself, ‘what dedication that Eric has,’” Stewart said with a laugh. “He eventually spent the time to enjoy his vacation, but that was a perfect illustration of what he is like as a person, especially with his dedication to criminal justice and finding ways to better himself.”

Stewart brought up another example of Loftin’s commitment to serving the community with how he has coached his daughter’s Bunker Hill 12-and-under softball team.

He said Loftin not only coaches those girls on softball skills but also takes the extra mile of reserving time after each practice and game to teach life lessons and leading team prayers. “As a dad, a law enforcement member and a Christian, you really appreciate seeing those kinds of things,” Stewart said. “He’s done a very successful job at mentoring these ladies… You can tell they all look up to him.”

Loftin’s pastor at Woodlawn Baptist Church, Ed Yount, said he has known Loftin for about 20 years. He agreed with Stewart’s statement that the appointment of Loftin as chief was a “win” for Conover. Yount said the community is very fortunate to have a police chief that is personable and accessible to the public.

“I’ve seen him in various situations when I rode along with him as a chaplain, and I noticed that he is a very firm and fair person,” Yount said. “The city of Conover will really appreciate his fairness and personable (nature), if they haven’t already.”

As the newly appointed police chief, Loftin said he plans to extend the trend of the previous chiefs by promoting a progressive police department.

He said the men before him, like Gary LaPhone and Brewer, did “an excellent job” during their tenures as police chiefs in adhering to the best practices of the business by adjusting to the changes in technology and accommodating the needs of the citizens of Conover.

Loftin said he will push for using the best available technology for his police force. He said the Conover Police Department used body cameras for training purposes and to promote transparent practices. “We just have to make sure we are providing our citizens with the best service possible,” Loftin said. “Providing the (department) with the right resources is one way to do this.”

Loftin also said finding qualified applicants to fill the openings at the police department is another major issue that will require his attention. Staff shortage has been an area-wide issue and also has had an adverse effect on Conover and neighboring police departments, Loftin said. He said Conover Police Department is in the preliminary stages of starting a citizen police academy. “That would give our citizens an opportunity to see what we do on a daily basis and then see the (role) that law enforcement plays in a community,” Loftin said.

Yount said Loftin should be able to fit right in with the legacies left by the previous police chiefs, who were respected by the community throughout their respective tenures. “We’ve had great chiefs in the past since I’ve been in Conover,” Yount said. “Knowing Eric’s leadership, organizational and administrative skills, he’ll make an excellent chief.”

2. A special thanks to Charles Loftin, who shared a photo of Loftin Road, between Wichita Falls and Jacksboro, TEXAS. To see the photo and see how many roads, streets, and even cities, carry the Loftin name, go to the Loftin Locations page. This is what Charles had to say: "I enjoy reading your site.  As a Loftin in Texas, it’s interesting to see the route’s that most took to get here. A couple of days ago, I was driving between Wichita Falls and Jacksboro, Tx and saw a bunch of big wind turbines. I wanted to pull over to take photos and when a road came up for me to turn on … it turned out to be … Loftin Rd. I was a little floored at the coincidence but ended up getting some good shots of the turbines and got this shot of the street sign."

3. I've done some upgrades on my Balls Creek Campground page. I've added a list of tent owners from 1947, 1957, 1963 and 2013. I've also added numerous photos of my parents, brother, aunts, uncles, grandmother Ida Setzer Loftin and myself that were taken at the campground by a professional photographer during the 1940s and 1950s. Without those campmeeting photos, there would be a lot less photos in many of our family photo collections. Be sure to check out the page.

1. I had a copy of the Marriage License of Alonzo Lester Loftin and Ida Lillian Setzer but recently found a copy of the Marriage Register which shows that Alonzo and Ida were married at the home of A. H. McNeill, Justice of the Peace, in Catawba.  This document has been added to Alonzo's page.

2. I previously had the date for Thomas Loftin's death listed in the 1940s, but I recently found an elusive Census for Thomas and his family that changed all that. The 1850 Catawba County Census shows that Thomas was still living and was age 53. The exact date of his death is not known but he was not listed on the 1860 Census, indicating that his death was some time prior to that.  The 1850 Census has been added to Thomas' page.  A "Loftin Family History" hand-written by Cordie Bland Loftin Wilson (1894-1981) has been added to the bottom of the Thomas Loftin page.  A timeline was also added to the bottom of Thomas' page.

3. I've found and added the 1900 and 1910 Census to the page of Mary Martha Lomax Cranford, wife of Rev. Manley Wilson Cranford, Sr.  Martha was the mother of Laura Rossie Cranford Loftin (and mother-in-law of William Alexander Loftin).  These census records have been added to Martha's page. I also found the Will of Manley Wilson Cranford, Jr., and also added it to his father's page - as well as a photo of Manley Jr, his wife and children.  I've also added a listing of Manley Jr's children with birth dates, death dates, and spouses. I've also added some information for Manley & Martha's son, Spencer Rouse Cranford - including his WWI Marine Muster, Will and Death Certificate.

4. I've added a copy of the marriage record for William Able Beatty (b.1761) and Isabella McCorkle (b.1771) to their respective pages.  They were the maternal grandparents of James Franklin Loftin.  Also, a copy of the will of Isabella McCorkle has been added to her webpage.  Her will mentions James Franklin Loftin as well as his sisters Isabella Caroline Loftin (Jones) and Betsy Salina Loftin (Cook). I've also added the 1790 Census and the 1810 Census to William Able Beatty's page. I also updated some additional data to William Beatty's page.

5. A new page was created for Henderson Loftin.  Henderson was the son of James Loftin and Susannah Sherrill and the brother of Thomas Loftin and Edmund Loftin.  I have added the marriage license for Henderson and Catherine Edwards, who married on 08 Apr 1827.

6. A new page was created for Ted Franklin Herman (1935 - 1956).  Ted was the son of Ruel and Daisy Pearl Loftin Herman and the grandson of Alonzo Lester Loftin and Ida Lillian Setzer Loftin. Ted was killed in an automobile accident when he was home from the Army on leave in 1956.

7. I updated the webpage for cousin Wayne Morrow Loftin (b.1930) with lots of new photos.  Wayne was the son of Roy Henry Loftin and Sarah Mae Morrow and the grandson of Alonzo Lester Loftin and Cornelia Lowrance. There is some additional information about Wayne on the Korean War page, too.

8. I completed the pages for my granddaughters' Savanna and Alexandria for 2015.  The girls get sweeter and prettier each year.

2. I added a copy of the marriage license for John Marion Setzer (b.1879) and Emma Leola Lowrance to his page.

3. I created a new page for Daniel Setzer, Jr. (1823 - 1907), son of Daniel Setzer (1790 - 1854) and Polly Wike (1791 - 1842).  There is a great photo of Daniel (as well as one of his son Robert Carr Setzer), as well as Census documents from 1850 to 1900, Marriage License, and Civil War information for Daniel and his son Robert who both served in Company K, NC 46th Infantry Regiment.

DNA News: LOFTIN

1. I (Curtis Loftin) took my first DNA test with Family Tree DNA on 30 Aug 2006.  This test was a Y-DNA12 marker test and over the years I've had the opportunity to connect with other "cousins" from around the US who matched me perfectly on this 12-marker test.  I upgraded the test on 21 Apr 2008 to the Y-DNA25 which is the 25-marker test and then again on 10 Jul 2008 to the Y-DNA37 which is the 37-marker test.  Through these DNA test I connected with Donald R. Loftin in Pennsylvania, a female relative of James Coldman Loftin (James was 90 at the time of his test), Raymond Loftin in Texas (who had previously come to NC to attend the Loftin Family Reunion and knew Peggy Brotherton - Ray has since died), and Don Loftin.

Male DNA passes down from father to son to son to son from generation to generation - virtually unchanged.  The nice thing about connecting to Donald, Don, James and Ray (who are also Loftins) is the fact that I know my branch is Loftins is unbroken - no illegitimacies.

In addition to these Loftins, I also connected to Ralph Stephens (in Texas) and Hudson Lee McGuire, both of whom do not have the last name of Loftin but we were a very high match.  Both of these branches believe there "was" a break in their particular branch and that they indeed carry the Loftin family DNA markers.

Anyway, after 8 years I finally decided to do another DNA test - this time through Ancestry.com.  This particular test will give me a "Ethnicity Estimate" of my DNA - in other words, where my ancestors come from and what percentage of those traits I carry in my DNA.  I've taken the test - mailed it back in - they've received it, but it will still be 5 to 8 weeks before I'll learn the results.  I'm really excited to see what I find out from this test.

When I took my original DNA test in 2006, there wasn't much they could tell about my female DNA - but that has changed a lot in the past few years.  After I get the results of this latest test, I'll post them on the DNA Testing page.
