The name Pettigrew comes from the ancient Norman culture that was established in Britain after the Conquest of 1066. It was a name for a "small man". The name originally derived from the Old French words "petit" meaning "small or little" and "cru" meaning "growth".
First found in Lanarkshire, where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Scottland to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.
There were originally no fixed spelling rules and as a result there are several variations of the name, including Pettigrew, Pettegrew, Pettergrew and Petigru.Our branch of the family seems to have been in Scotland, France and Ireland before coming to America. At present our most dissonant Pettigrew ancestor was James Pettigrew I who was married to Dame Geiles Moncrieff.
The Pettigrew family connects to the Moore and Cochran lines before Martha Pettigrew married John Witherspoon prior to 1747, connecting those two branches of the family. The Witherspoons connects to the Setzers and Loftins.
