1. A very warm and happy birthday greeting to
Lois Loftin Mundy who turned 105 on 13 Dec 2013 and
Marie Loftin Robinson who turned 103 on 16 Dec 2013.
Their sister
Helen Loftin White turned 87 on 15 Jun 2013. They were
the daughters of
Arthur Lee Loftin and Alice Josephine Gilleland - and the
granddaughters of
William Alexander Loftin and
Laura Rossie Cranford. |

2. A great big happy birthday to my mother, Willie
Goble Loftin, who turned 88 on 04 Dec 2013. Willie was
the wife of
Sam William Loftin and the daughter of
Martin Luther Goble and
Beulah Vernesta Johnson. |

3. I (Curtis Loftin) attended Appalachian State
University in Boone, NC, from the Fall of 1971 until the Spring
of 1975. Mom (Willie
Goble Loftin) wrote me letters frequently during those four
years I was away from home and we also talked on the phone (but
only occasionally due to the cost of long distance charges).
Even though she wrote letters the entire four years I was away
at college, for some reason or other I only kept a set of 13
letters from my Senior Year. Now, almost 40 years later, I
realize that I'm glad that I did. I've created a new
webpage called
Letters - Willie Goble Loftin and have transcribed them all
and photocopied a few. In the process of transcribing
Mom's letters, I have left her spelling just as she had it -
which often reflects the warm southern colloquial language - as
well as her 8th grade education in the late 1930s. |

4. I've created a couple of new pages entitled
Curtis Dean Loftin - The High School Years (1967 - 1971),
Curtis Dean Loftin - College Years (1971 - 1975),
Curtis Dean Loftin - Our Wedding and
Curtis Dean Loftin - 30 Years of Teaching (1975 - 2005). These pages are mainly for
my children and grandchildren and tells the story of how
Carolyn
and I met at college and how the Lord brought us together. It
includes photos from our college days as well as wedding photos. |

5. The $1.8 Million former of home of racecar driver
Jeremy Mayfield on Hudson Chapel Road in Catawba County, NC, was
burned on Thursday 19 Dec 2013. Mayfield had tried to
renovate the house, but when he was banned from racing in 2009
and arrested for possession of meth and stolen property later
on, work on the house came to an abrupt stop. He was
eventually evicted from the property due to financial problems.
Everything in the seven-bedroom house was stripped down from the
windows to the wiring. The house was originally scheduled for
burning on 14 Dec, but that original burning was cancelled due
to inclement weather. The new owner says he wants to farm
the property where the house sat.
The house was originally built by baseball player
Bryan Harvey, former
Pitcher for the California Angels & Florida Marlins.
Bryan married Lisa Martin, the daughter of Wayne & Elaine Lee
Martin, the granddaughter of
Glenn & Allie Loftin Lee, and the great granddaughter of
Alonzo Lester Loftin and
Ida Lillian Setzer. |

6. I created a new webpage called
Family Relationships. Understanding family
relationships can be a little difficult if you don't get a
little bit of instruction. And just because someone told
you how it all worked, that doesn't necessarily make it correct.
I understood "some parts" of who my 2nd and 3rd cousins were
when I was growing up, but not "First Cousin Once Removed".
Like many others, I also referred to "Grand Aunts" as "Great
Aunts" - and there is a difference even though some will tell
you they are the same. Be sure to check out the page. |

2. As I continue with my genealogy research, and as
I get older, I've decided to add some "Tribute" pages to the
website for special people in my life who were not related by
blood - but were just as much family as those who carried the
same DNA as me. I don't want time to forget them or the
sweet memories I have of them. These people helped mold
me, influence me, and make into the person I am today (at least
the good parts of me).
Mrs. Flora Edwards Stewart was a neighbor who kept me when I
was a child. She taught me my nursery-rhymes and "petted"
me way too much as a child - but I always loved her for it.
She had no children, and I only have a few photos, but I do have
some wonderful memories.
Tony Francis Sanford was one of my college friends when I
attended Appalachian State University in Boone. Tony was
also at least partially responsible for Carolyn & I getting
together while we were at ASU. Like Mrs. Stewart, Tony
died without children. He was only 41 years old.
Betty Orr Daniels Wessell was Carolyn and my college "Mama"
for the last two years we were at Appalachian. Her son Dan
became one of my best friends and her husband, John
Wessell, gave Carolyn away at our wedding. The time we
spent with Betty and her family was frequently spent in prayer,
singing around the piano while Dan played the guitar - as well
as with lots of fellowship and lots and lots of laughter. |

1. I've created a new webpage entitled
Clergy - Ministers in the Family that will showcase members
of the various branches of the family who have been licensed,
ordained, served as ministers or pastors, or have served as
missionaries. As always, the page will "grow" with your
help. Thus far I have information about the following
family members on the new webpage: James Russell Boggs, Manley
Wilson Cranford Sr., David Anderson Lanier, Curtis Loftin, Pearl
Maybelle Loftin, Sam William Loftin and Paul Schronce. If
you have additional family members (current or past) who have
been (1) licensed, (2) ordained, (3) served as a minister or
pastor, OR (4) served as a missionary, please send
me the pertinent information and I'll include them, too.
Thanks. |

2. While looking through old photos, I came across
photos of the family that were taken in the 1960s and 1970s at
the Balls Creek Campground - including Curtis Loftin, Faye &
Barry Brotherton, Beverly & Billy Loftin, Gary Potter, and
Morris Hoyle. Those photos have been scanned and added to
the
Balls Creek Campground page. |
|
3. A new webpage has been created for the Bunker Hill
Covered Bridge in Catawba County, NC, with recent photos of the
bridge and Connor Park. I also came across some family
photos from 1974 when I had come home from college with some
friends and my family (& friends) went to Connor's Park for a
picnic. There are photos of my dad, Sam, who died in 1979
as well as my brother, Bill, who died in 2005 - as well as other
family members. Go to
Bunker Hill Covered Bridge to see the photos. |
|
4. Sometimes I'm a little slow getting things added
to the website. I created a webpage for
Arthur Fred Loftin (1923 - 1999) in October 2013. Just
this past weekend I went to take a photo of Arthur Fred's house
so that I could add it to his webpage. When I got home and
went to upload the photos from my camera, I realized that I had
two photos of the house that I had take in 2006 (according to
the date stamp on the data file). So, it only took me 7
years, but there is finally a place to add the photo of Arthur
Fred & Janice's home. |
|
5. Photos of Coyte & Kathleen Loftin's headstones
and footstones at the Claremont Town Cemetery have been added to
the
Coyte James Loftin page and to the
WWII page. |

6. Murray's
Mill had their annual Harvest Festival on September 28 - 29,
2013 (Saturday & Sunday). I was there in the early part of
Saturday morning to take photos. The Murray’s Mill Harvest
Folk Festival celebrates Catawba County’s agricultural heritage
with an array of exhibits, craftsmen, and activities, including
petting zoos, antique cars, tractors, farm machinery, and
traditional food preparations such as molasses making.
Activities included: Molasses Making, Bee Keeping, Animal
Exhibits, Petting Zoo, Farrier, Gold Panning,
Civil War Re-enactors, Apple Cider Making, Quilting,
Blacksmith, Steam Engines, Farm Machinery, Corn Shucking & Corn
Shelling, Butter & Apple Butter Making, Storytelling, Craftsmen
selling their wares, Food & Drink, Catawba Valley Pottery,
Catawba Valley Woodcarvers, John Murray House open for tours,
Murray & Minges General Store open, Murray’s Mill in operation
and open to tour. |
|
 |
|
I especially enjoyed the Civil-War re-enactors, the Antique Car
Show and the Antique Tractor Show. My wife, Carolyn, loved
the crafts - quilt making and old-fashioned lace making.
There are new photos added to the bottom of the
Murray's Mill page from the 2013 Harvest Festival. I
also added the Civil War reenantors photos to the
Civil War Reenactmant page. |

|
7. A new webpage has been created for Betty Jo Loftin
Abernathy (1930 - 1999), the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt
"Speedo" Loftin and Fannie Marie Hoke. Betty married Paul
Edward Abernathy and had three children: Jerry, Randy and
Theodore Banks. |
|
8. On Saturday, 09 Nov 2013, the inhabitants and
neighbors of the small town of
Catawba came together for their annual Veteran's Festival
and Parade. Main Street was closed to make room for
vendors and traffic was detoured around the back side of town.
Follow the
Catawba link and scroll to the bottom of the page to see the
photos. I also added photos to the bottom of this page
from previous Civil War reenanctments in downtown Catawba in
2010 and 2011. |

9. On Saturday, 09 Nov 2013, Fort Dobbs in Statesville,
NC, was hosted their annual "Military Timeline" with reenactors
displaying uniforms, weapons and gear from The French & Indian
War,
The
Revolutionary War,
The Civil War,
World War I,
World War II, and
Vietnam. I just learned about the event from the WWII
reactor at Catawba's Veteran's Festival & Parade and decided to
check it out. It was a great event - no cost - and I will
be sure to check it out next year at the same time. It
game me the opportunity to take lots of military photos to
"flesh out" the various military pages that I have created for
the Family Genealogy Website. |

10. The origin of Loftin family related names come from
England, Scotland, Germany and France. ENGLISH NAMES:
Cranford, Harwell, Johnson, Lanier, Loftin, Lomax, Sherrill,
Upright, Washington and Work. FRENCH NAMES: Corzine
and Motz. GERMAN NAMES: Fisher, Kaiser and Rudisell.
SCOTTISH NAMES: Beatty, Givens and McCorkle.
JEWISH NAMES: Fisher |

11. I was recently contacted by David McCorkle from Cary,
NC. David is a distant cousin through the McCorkle branch
of the family. He manages the McCorkle Y-DNA project with
Family Tree DNA - the largest DNA company in the. If you
carry the McCorkle name, are married to a McCorkle, or have a
brother/father/uncle who is a McCorkle and would like to
participate in the DNA project, contact David at
genquery@dmmemail.com |
|
David said, "From what I can tell so far, there were 5 McCorkle
“clusters” in what was then Mecklenburg County, listed by the
“founding” member: John McCorkle - James McCorkle and Robert
McCorkle in the Waxhaw area (now Union Co.) - your guy Matthew
in what is now Lincoln/Catawba Co. - and Stephen in the Rock
Hill SC area. There is also the Alexander McCorkle branch in
Salisbury, but that’s far enough away that there really aren’t
any conflicts. So far I have found no evidence as to how these
McCorkles are related, but one has to think they are. It does
appears that all came through Pennsylvania before settling in
NC., and all are of “Scotch-Irish” origins. Rev. Louis McCorkle
in his “Viking Glory” book speculates that Robert (his line) and
James were brothers, but he really doesn’t cover John, Matthew
and Stephen." |

I started cemetery-hopping to collect some photos and add them
to the website. Grave markers for Leslie Burette
Sigmon, Daisy McNeill Setzer Sigmon, Daisy Leymre Sigmon and Nannie Elizabeth Sigmon Sigman have been added to the
webpage for
Daisy McNeill Setzer Sigmon. I also added
Obituaries for Nannie Elizabeth and Daisy Lemyre, as well as a
photo of Daisy Lemyre to the Daisy McNeill Setzer Sigmon. |
|
7. Gravemarkers have been added for John Marion
Setzer, Emma Leola Lowrance Setzer and Thad Setzer to
the
John Marion Setzer webpage. John was a brother to
Grandma
Ida Setzer Loftin. |
|
8. Gravemarkers have been added for Ransom Edgar
Little and Sallie Ann Mae Setzer Little to the
Sallie Ann Mae Setzer Little webpage. Sallie was a
sister to Grandma

1. I've created a new webpage entitled
Clergy - Ministers in the Family that will showcase members
of the various branches of the family who have been licensed,
ordained, served as ministers or pastors, or have served as
missionaries. As always, the page will "grow" with your
help. Thus far I only have "limited" information on Paul
Schronce (great-grandson of
Martin Luther Goble). If you have additional family
members (current or past) who have been (1) licensed, (2)
ordained, (3) served as a minister or pastor, OR
(4) served as a missionary, please send me the pertinent
information and I'll include them, too. Thanks. |
|
2. While looking through old photos, I came across
photos of the family that were taken in the 1960s and 1970s at
the Balls Creek Campground - including Curtis Loftin, Beverly &
Billy Loftin, and Billie Eggers. Those photos have been
scanned and added to the
Balls Creek Campground page. |
|
Go to
Bunker Hill Covered Bridge to see the page. |

4. Murray's
Mill had their annual Harvest Festival on September 28 - 29,
2013 (Saturday & Sunday). I was there in the early part of
Saturday morning to take photos. The Murray’s Mill Harvest
Folk Festival celebrates Catawba County’s agricultural heritage
with an array of exhibits, craftsmen, and activities, including
petting zoos, antique cars, tractors, farm machinery, and
traditional food preparations such as molasses making.
Activities included: Molasses Making, Bee Keeping, Animal
Exhibits, Petting Zoo, Farrier, Gold Panning,
Civil War Re-enactors, Apple Cider Making, Quilting,
Blacksmith, Steam Engines, Farm Machinery, Corn Shucking & Corn
Shelling, Butter & Apple Butter Making, Storytelling, Craftsmen
selling their wares, Food & Drink, Catawba Valley Pottery,
Catawba Valley Woodcarvers, John Murrray House open for tours,
Murray & Minges General Store open, Murray’s Mill in operation
and open to tour. |
|
 |
|
also added the Civil War re-enantors photos to the
Civil War Reenactmant page. |
|
5. On Saturday, 09 Nov 2013, the inhabitants and
neighbors of the small town of
Catawba came together for their annual Veteran's Festival
and Parade. Main Street was closed to make room for
vendors and traffic was detoured around the back side of town.
Follow the
Catawba link and scroll to the bottom of the page to see the
photos. |

1.
Flora Edwards Stewart (Mrs. Harry Stewart, 1901 - 1977) was
a widowed neighbor who kept me when I was a toddler, while my
parents worked. She taught me my nursery rhymes and became
a 2nd "Mama" to me and to many others who enjoyed the wonderful
cakes she made for birthdays, weddings and anniversaries - as
well as cookies and candies. Since she had no children of
her own, I created a page for Mrs. Stewart in 2011 to honor her
memory. I recently came across some additional photos of
her and have added them to her page. |

Holiness Church. Additional information has been added to
the page for
Pearl Maybelle Loftin, including learning what her middle
name was, a copy of her passport, a copy of the passenger & crew
list for Seattle Washington in 1927 showing her departure &
arrival, and her Death Certificate. |

6. Warm Regards to William "Bill" Earl Loftin & Nancy
"Nan" Irene Dabbs Loftin of Charlotte for their upcoming Family
Reunion for the descendants of Charles Ivey Loftin, Sr., &
Martha Jane Jackson Loftin. In honor of their Reunion, a
page has been created for
Charles Ivey Loftin, Sr. The lineage for Charles &
Martha Jane has been added to both the
Loftin Descendancy page and the
Eldridge Loftin Descendancy page. |
|
 |
|
I got a follow up from Nan after the reunion and this is what
she had to say: "The reunion was wonderful. We had over 35
Loftins and I was able to get a girl from the Gaston County
Museum in Dallas to come give us a little Gastonia history
lesson. After lunch, we walked over to the cemetery and
visited family graves. Some of the grandchildren had never
been to Gastonia so all was good." |

also the nephew of
Jacob Lanier Setzer (1804 - 1891). David married
Saline Elizabeth Sigman and fathered at least nine children with
her. Family legend also says that he keep a mistress in a
house nearby and that he fathered six children with her. |

1. I've been working with a genealogy website called
Find-A-Grave for almost two years now.
Find-A-Grave is an international website that has cemetery
listings around the world with information about individuals
buried there. Last summer, while Carolyn & I were at the
beach, I took my genealogy research with me with plans to work
on it when I had some free time - and I did. I created
several pages at Find-A-Grave for various family members.
The pages usually give a brief biography of the deceased person,
show photos of the gravestones and usually have a few photos of
the individual. |
|
This month, I decided that it would be nice to make that
information available to you so I created a webpage on our
Family Genealogy Website for the pages I've created, the
pages I did not created but currently host, and some additional
pages that reflect additional members of the various branches of
our family. Be sure to check it out at my new
Find-A-Grave page. |

Mrs. Vera Dove Still Loftin
Born: 05 Feb 1916, Youth, GA
Died: 14 Jun 2013, Monroe, GA |
|
Mrs. Vera Dove Still Loftin, age 97, died Saturday, 14 June
2013, at Clearview Regional Hospital, Monroe, Georgia, of heart
failure. |
|
Mrs. Loftin was preceded in death by her husband Colonel Robert
Taylor Loftin, Jr., United States Air Force, Retired;
granddaughter Lauren Kate Loftin; parents William Ira Still, Sr.
and Dovie Viola Atkinson Still; and brothers and sister, William
Ira Still, Jr., Harold Royuce Still, and Ruby Lee Still
Blankenship. |
|
Mrs. Loftin is survived by sons and daughters, Robert Ira Loftin
& Judy Lee Hill Loftin, Mark Still Loftin & Anita Louise Sanders
Loftin; grandsons and granddaughters, Jarrad Michael Vaughn and
Olivia Seney Vaughn, William Taylor Loftin, and Marie L. Riggan
&Michael Daniel Riggan; and great grandsons and great
granddaughter, Ethan Gage Vaughn, Elliott Rider Vaughn and
Michaela Judy Riggan. |
|
Born in Youth, Georgia on 05 Feb 1916, Mrs. Loftin attended
Walton County Schools and graduated from Monroe High School.
After finishing business school, she worked in Atlanta, Georgia,
until she met and married Col. Loftin on 12 Dec 1941 and began
her career as a home maker. After several moves during
World War II and Korea, she settled in Atlanta, Georgian, and
then Decatur, Georgia. In 2000 she moved to Bethlehem,
Georgia, and them Loganville, Georgia, in 2012. |
|
She was raised in the Corinth Christian Church, Loganville.
Once she was married, she became a long time member of the First
Christian Church of Atlanta where she was a member of the
Christian Women's Fellowship and Crusaders Class. After
Mr. Loftin settled in Bethlehem and Loganville, she again
attended the Corinth Christian Church were she was a member of
the Progressive Co-ed Class. |
|
At 97 years old, Grandmother, Aunt Vera, or Miss Vera as she was
affectionately called, lived independently, cooked her own
meals, kept a spotless house, and lived with her kitty, Katie.
She still drove and attended church regularly. At her
birthday celebration this past February, she was seen on her
knees playing with one of the children and she got up without
any help. Until a year ago, she had been in great health
and had not been in a hospital as a patient since the births of
her two boys some sixty years ago. An avid sports fan, she
especially loved college football, basketball, baseball, golf,
and hockey. She knew as much about the games as anyone. |
|
She loved her immediate and extended family, her family of
friends, her church, and her travel. She was an avid
reader and enjoyed a good book over television unless there was
a game being televised. |

1. Recently I realized that the photo copy of
J.C. Goble's birth certificate on his webpage was very light
and faded looking. I used Photo Shop to darken it - and
took a closer look at the information while I was doing it. |
|
On J.C.'s birth certificate, it asked the question, "Number of
children born to this mother,
Beulah Vernesta Johnson Goble, including present birth?"
The answer was "8". I also asked, "Number of children of
this mother now living?" and the answer was "4". Those
living would have been Ethel, May, Leggs and J.C. Those no
longer living were
Lewis (b.1910), Baby Boy (b.1914),
Baby Girl (b.1915), and one more that we have no information
about. We don't know if this new "child" was from her
marriage to
Martin Luther Goble or her previous marriage to Charlie
Johnson. My mother,
Willie Goble Loftin, is one of Nessie's two living children
as of 2013, but she had no knowledge of the child. |
|
It had previously been believed that grandma
Beulah Vernesta Johnson Goble had birth 14 children, but
this document indicates that there would have been one more - 15
children in all. |

Martin Luther Goble and his family lived in the Henry Setzer
house when they lived in Iredell County and the children were
little. Two photo of that house from 2008 were added to
Martin's page. The family eventually moved to Catawba
County. One of the homes they lived in was the Murphy
Jones house. A photo of the Murphy Jones house was also
added to Martin's page. |

1. During May I reconnected with a genealogy friend and
cousin, Linda Dymon, in Florida. Linda shared an
invitation with me to view her family tree on Ancestry.com.
Linda had spent a lot of time working with the Fink & Johnson
families. While looking for documents and information to
add to my own tree on Ancestry.com, I came across some great
information to add to some of the existing pages on our Family
Genealogy Website. |
|
2. I added additional photos and information to
Pinkney C. Johnson (b. 1827) webpage. Pinkney was my
Great-Great-Grandfather and served in the Confederate Army
during the Civil War. Pinkney enlisted in the Confederate
Army on 01 Aug 1862 as a Private,
in Company C, 48th Infantry Regiment and was promoted to full
Corporal during his service. He was
wounded in the hand at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 Dec 1862.
He returned to duty prior to 01 Mar 1863. Reported present
March - June 1863, March - April 1864, and Sept - Oct 1864.
Pinkney was admitted to a federal hospital on 01 Apr 1865 with a
gunshot wound to the right leg that he had received at
Appomattox. His right leg had to be amputated. He
died in a federal hospital at Point of Rocks, VA on 03 Apr 1865
from wounds. A copy of U.S. National Cemetery record, as
well as a photo of his headston at City Point, VA, were added to
his page. |
|
3. I discovered the Pension Request Form for
Robert Johnson (b. 1778) who served in the War of 1812. |
|
4. I've been working quite a bit with additional
information
James Q. Leslie/Lasley. Several years ago I purchased
a copy of the book The Confessions of EDWARD ISHAM - A Poor
White Life of the Old South after discovering that both
James Q. Leslie and
Daniel Fink (of Iredell County, NC) were mentioned in the
book. The book is an autobiography of the life of Isham
(alias Hardaway Bon), who was convicted for the murder of James
Cornelius of Catawba County and hanged on 15 May 1860 in Newton.
Isham was originally from Jackson & Carroll County, Georgia, but
was living in North Carolina at the time of the murder in 1859 -
in the Catawba and Iredell County area. Isham worked for
Daniel Fink and even married Mandy Leslie, the daughter
of James Q. Leslie. Previously I had only found only the
1860, 1870 and 1880 Census for James Q. Leslie, but after
reading Isham's autobiography, I was able to also find the 1850
Census for James Leslie - as well as the Census for 1840, 1830,
1820 and 1810. |
|
Edward Isham's story is an interesting tale and a summary of his
life can be found on the new webpage created for
Amanda "Mandy" Leslie. |
|
|
5. A new page was created for
Laura Anna Leslie Moose, b. 1865, the daughter of
James Q. Leslie and
Sarah "Sallie" Fink., as well as
James Osborne Leslie, b. 1841. |

Miscellaneous Page Updates |

1. A new web page was created for
Murray's Mill in Catawba, NC. The mill, built by John
Murray, whose father, William, had operated a mill on the site
since 1883. In 1906, William deeded the property to his sons,
John and O.D. In 1907, John Murray acquired a 5/6 interest from
his brother O.D., who would take over operation of the general
store. In 1913, John replaced his father’s mill with the current
two-story structure, adding a 22’ overshot waterwheel, in lieu
of the former turbine. Making room for the mill’s expansion, the
Murrays moved the general store at that time to its present
location. In 1938, John’s son, Lloyd, raised the dam six feet
and installed the 28’ waterwheel (it’s said that William’s
original wooden dam stands beneath the surface of the present
pond).
Many of the Loftins took their corn and grain to Murray's Mill
to be ground into cornmeal and flour.
What many don't realize is that parts of several films have been
filmed at Murry's Mill, Murray & Mingus Store and around the
lake.
Murray's Mill has also served as the location for numerous
weddings. |

over Christmas. Everyone got out of the house OK, but
unfortunately the house was lost. Those of us with a love
for family history hate to see the loss of this old family home. |
