Community Pastime
Young And Old Follow Bandys' Basketball
By Charlie Lentz
CATAWBA - In late autumn and throughout the winter, golks along Bandys Crossroads can look out their windows in the early evening and spot J.C. Goble walking toward Bandys High.
His predictable pace can be viewed each Tuesday and Friday night when there's a basketball game going on at the school.
Each step the 70-year-old Goble takes brings him closer to the gym, closer to the heart of Hoopsville.
"You're in basketball territory around here," said Goble. "You look forward to ball."
Goble and the rest of the community are especially looking forward to Saturday. On that day, the Bandys High girls basketball team will play Clinton High for the State 2-A-Championship.
The title game is on the minds of most everyon in town. And the confidence the community has in its team is about as hard to hide as a 7-footer in the land.
The girls team takes basketball as seriously as anyone. The Lady Trojans brought home the state crown in 1977, '81 and '82.
"We think we're about as good as anybody," said Bernice Harvey. "When it comes down to the big games, we're usually here."
Harvey's sons, Brian and Dwayne, both played basketball at Bandys. She said the community almost takes winning seasons for granted.
"They've had so many good teams, so many years. It's just something we look forward to every year, " said Harvey.
Her daughter-in-law, Lisa Harvey (then Lisa Martin), played at forward on the 1981 Bandys team which won the state championship. She would like to see this year's squad win it.
"I'm going to be rooting for them. I'm really happy for them," said the younger Harvey. "My mom's going down (to watch the championship). She misses it since I don't play anymore."
Lisa works at Drums Food Center on Highway 16 in Catawba. The talk there sometimes drifts more to last night's basketball scores than today's food prices.
"Everybody comes in and talks about what happened during the game," said Harvey.
Conversation also runs to basketball at G. C. Lee's Grocery store on Buffalo Shoals Road.
He said most of his customers didn't think Bandys would lose to Newton-Conover in their third meeting this season in the regional final.
"They didn't believe they could beat Bandys three times in one season. And they didn't," said Harvey.
Lee, 73, happens to be Lisa Harvey's grandfather. Lee is pretty sure who's going to take the title on Saturday at Carmichael Auditorium.
"I believe they're going to win it," said Lee, flanked by a black woodstove. "They believe they're going to win the state."
Ben Elmore is a frequent visitor at Lee's Grocery. He sits close to the stove with grandson Bradley nearby him.
"Everyone's talking about it," says the 68-year-ol. "They'll be quite a few people go down (to the championship) from here. They'll know Bandys is down there."
Bandys fans are well known for making their presence felt at games.
Coach Mike Matheson has heard those fans throughout his eight seasons at Bandys. Matheson recognizes that Bandys fans come from a wide spectrum of the community's population. Some are older, most of them are quite discerning.
"We have a loft of people in the community who watch the team," Matheson said. "People say they're a bit older. We've got a lot of people who are knowledgeable of the game.
He can count on many familiar faces at each game.
"We've got regulars that I know if we play, they'll be here,"Matheson said. "If they're not there, I know they're either sick or somehing else is going on.
One of those regulars is Goble. According to his wife, Ada, J.C. is "one of the first at the game and one of the last to leave."
He's been a Bandys fan .... (Misssing part of article).
"They go win or lose. They support this school," said Goble. "They got pride.
Ada doesn't go to as many games as J.C. but when she venturew down the road to the gym, it's a positive experience.
"It's just a feelin you get when you walk in that gym," said Ada, 66. "You talk about Bandys. It's a good feeling."
Most fans feel better when the team is victorious.
(Missing part of article) ... he buys me two hot dogs, Matheson.
Of course, most people in town are hoping Saturday's championship will be a two-hot-dog night for Bandys.
Goble is pretty sure it will be.
"I have a feeling we'll win this thing," said J.C. "I wouldn't count Bandys out of nothing."
With a grin in his eye, Goble recalls a conversation with Newton-Conover Athletic Director, Don Patrick, before Bandys' victory over N-C (Newton-Conover) in the regional final.
     (Missing rest of article).
