Surnames are characterized by a multitude of spelling variations. The introduction of Norman French to England, as well as the official court languages of Latin and French, also had pronounced influences on the spelling of surnames. The name was originally spelled as Wessyngton. The name de Wessyngton is thought to be of Anglo-Saxon origins and existed in the Isles prior to the Norman Conquest in 1066. The village of Wassengtone is mentioned in the Saxon charter by King Edgar in 973. The name of this village derives from the Old English word "wassingatun" meaning a settlement of the people of Wassa - a personal name which combines Old English elements, meaning "hunt" and "victory".The Washington family connects to the Lanier family when Elizabeth Washington married Sampson Lanier. Sampson Lanier's granddaughter, Martha, married John Loftin. Elizabeth appears to be a 3rd cousin to George Washington, the 1st President of the United States, although his lineage has been reproduced in many conflicting versions since his death.
