FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

1. I was recently contacted by Melody Myrick Herring, from Texas, via email.  Melody shared a copy of the Death Certificate of the twin brother of Daisy Pearl Loftin Herman - and the son of Alonzo Lester Loftin & Ida Lillian Setzer.  This was a document that I had not found myself previously.  The Death Certificate incorrectly lists the sex of Daisy Pearls twin as "female" and also lists the place of burial as Friendship Church (instead of Center Methodist Church in Catawba County).  The Death Certificate does give additional information on the child.  He was born 06 Jun 1914 and died 13 Jun 1914 - living for only seven days.  Thanks to Melody for sharing this document with me.  I created a new page for this child entitled "Infant Son Loftin 1914" and added a copy of the Death Certificate and a photo of his grave marker at Center Church.

2. I have previously believed that Alonzo Lester Loftin & IIda Lillian Setzer. had three "Infant Sons" who were born and died shortly after their birth - without being named.  This belief was supported by grave markers at Center Methodist Church in Catawba County, NC, for an Infant Son who was born and died in 1908, another Infant Son (Daisy Pearl's twin) who was born and died in 1914, and a third Infant Son who was born and died in 1928.  I recently discovered, however, a birth and a death certificate for another "Infant Son" who was born on 26 Oct 1922 and died 27 Oct 1922.  The Birth Index incorrectly lists this child's birth as 11 Oct (which is actually his older brother Oscar's birth date).  The Death Certificate clearly states that this child died 27 Oct 1922 and had only lived for 1 day and 2 hours.  The cause of death was listed as "malfunction of upper air passage".  At this time I have NOT been able to find a grave marker at Center Methodist Church.  This Birth Index and Death Certificate have been added to a page entitled "Infant Son Loftin 1922".

I asked Frances Loftin Cook (b. 1926 and the sole surviving child of Alonzo & Ida as of Dec 2014) if there was an "Infant Son" born between her brother Oscar's birth and hers and she said she didn't think so (but since she was not born until 4 years later, she obviously didn't remember -- and there is both birth and death records for this child).  I asked her when the last "Infant Son" was born.  She told me she thought it was 1927.  I told her the grave marker said it was 1928 - and she said, "Well, maybe that was when it was".  I asked her if she knew who had the grave markers for the infant sons at Center and when.  She said she did not know.  It is entirely possible that after this child (born 1922) was buried, the grave marker was added later - and was incorrectly dated "1928".

At this time, with no additional information to go on, I'll list Alonzo and Ida have having four infant sons who died shortly after birth - in 1908, 1914, 1922 and 1928.  I have previously listed Alonzo as being the father of 19 children, but from her on out I'll list him as being the father of 20 children.

3. As of January 2015 current monthly news can be found on the 2015 NEWS Page for the entire year.  Be sure to check it out during the year to see what I've been waiting on.

4. Joyce Elizabeth Murray Setzer, 86, of Claremont, died Monday 22 Dec 2014 at the Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory, NC.  Joyce was born 25 Feb 1928 in Catawba County, NC, to Paul Abraham Murray and Sadie Elizabeth Loftin Murray Lee (and stepfather Vernon Asbury Lee).  She was the granddaughter of Alonzo Lester Loftin and Ida Lillian Setzer.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by an infant son Randy John Setzer and grandson Jeffery Todd Poovey.

Joyce is survived by:

Son: Jay Setzer and wife Jane of Claremont

Daughters: Paulette and husband Dr. Larry Burns of Gastonia
Diane and husband Charles Poovey of Conover

Sister: Linda Setzer and husband Danny of Newton

5 Grandchildren and spouses: Scott and Cynthia Burns of Waxhaw, Kevin and Michelle Poovey of Claremont, Jason Setzer of Claremont, Michael and Jennifer Poovey of Hickory, Melissa and Chris Cornett of Conover.

11 Great-Grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews

Joyce was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Conover where she was the flower chart secretary for 30 years and served on the Altar Guild.  She was a former member of the Bucheimer Club.  She retired from the shipping department at Regal Bedspread.

A service of remembrance was held on Saturday, 27 Dec 2014, at 12 noon, at Mt. View United Methodist Church in Claremont, NC.  Dr. Larry Burns officiated.  Burial followed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Conover.  The family received friends on Saturday, 27 Dec 2014, from 10:00 to 11:45 a.m. at Mt. View Methodist Church.

Carmen Nichols Loftin, 91, of Beaver, VA, passed away 22 Sep 2014 at Bowers Hospice House.  Mrs. Loftin was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church and Completed a business degree and held many administrative positions in the energy and health care fields.  She is preceded in death by her parents James and Minnie Nichols of Favetteville, WV; 1st husband, Paul W. Smith; and daughter Iva Mae Loftin Peters. She is survived by her 2nd husband Larry Henry Loftin, and children Paul & Addie Smith of Raleigh, NC, James & Linda Smith of South Charleston, SC, Alex & Susan Skirpan of Midlothian, VA, Sarah & Mike Clevenger of Winfield, WV, and Larry Loftin Jr. of Lewisburg, WV.  She is also survived by a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  A tribute to the life of Mrs. Carmen Loftin was held on noon Wednesday 24 Sep 2014 at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, VA, with the Rev. 2. Bradley Dylan Seese married Elizabeth "Beth" Ann Loftin (daughter of Curtis & Carolyn Weeks Loftin) in 1996.  Right now, my granddaughters, Savanna & Ali, aren't really interested in family genealogy, but I'm hoping they will be in the future.  I've decided to work on the Seese family ancestry for them - starting with a brand new page with photos and stories from their dad, Bradley Dylan Seese.  There is also a Seese Family Tree already available with new Seese pages as I get them completed.  A new page has been added for Worthington Frederick Seese, Jr. (b.1942) and his adopted father, Worthington Frederick Seese, Sr. (1910 - 1995).

3. I received an email from Jill Jobe in Texas toward the end of August.  Jill had information on the McCorkle line and wanted to share.  Her ancestor William Waddel McCorkle (1808 - 1897) was born in the Mecklenburg area of NC (as well as his father, William Joel McCorkle (1782 - 1845)).  When William Waddel McCorkle was 33 he relocated to Alabama, as did his brother Thomas Jefferson McCorkle.  To learn more about this McCorkle ancestor, check out the McCorkle Descendancy page, the page for William Waddell McCorkle and the page for his daughter Modena McCorkle Gray (1845 - 1933).  Jill had lots of information and some really beautiful photos to share.  If you descend from this line, you'll want to check it out.

1. Jane McCuiston (from Florida) and I talked via the telephone about a year ago concerning the Witherspoon branch of the family.  She called again this month and asked if I would have time to meet with her, her husband Walter, and Vicki Witherspoon Marlow (who lives in Catawba County), on Friday, 19 Sep 2014.  Jane, Walter, Vicki, my wife Carolyn & I met at Smokie D's Restaurant (Witherspoon's Crossroads) and talked about our Witherspoon ancestors as we shared a meal. After lunch, Vickie took us all to St. James Cemetery in Newton to look at the Witherspoon graves there.  Vicki showed us where the Witherspoon Family Cemetery used to be - just off of Hwy 10 in the parcel of land between Tolley Street and Wayne Drive.  Vickie told us that there were lots of grave markers on that property when she was a child (including Margaret Rankin Witherspoon), but sadly the markers were removed to make the property easier to sell. Vicki took us to meet one of the oldest living Witherspoons - Margie Witherspoon (wife of O.D. (Osborn Denford Witherspoon)).  Margie shared information with us from her own genealogy collection.  Jane has recently purchased copies of wills (at $30 each) and land deeds for many of the Witherspoons and has been sharing them with me.

2. My direct ancestors, Miles Rankin Witherspoon & wife Sarah Elizabeth Aderholdt, are buried in the Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery in Claremont, NC.   The recent visit by Jane McCuiston has motivated me to work on the Witherspoon branch of the family again.  I'll be adding new pages to the website as information become available.  The Thomas Wesley Witherspoon (1787 - 1856) has been updated and a copy of his will (courtes of Jane McCuiston) has been added to his page, with more information about his children.  The Thomas Wesley Witherspoon, Sr. (1747 - 1790) page has also been updated with a copy of his will (again courtesy of Hane McCuiston) with additional information about his children.  The Miles Rankin Witherspoon (1817 - 1892) page has been updated.  The Margaret Ann Elizabeth Witherspoon Setzer (1845 - 1932) page has been updated.  The John Witherspoon II (1724 - 1778) page has been updated.  A new page has been started for John Witherspoon I (b. 1700).  Major updates (including a photo of the entire family) have been added to the John Hart Witherspoon (1850 - 1924) page.  Major updates have been made to the Thomas Aderholdt Withersppon (1852 - 1940) page.  Major updates have been made to the Leander Denford Lutz Witherspoon (1861 - 1941) page.  Major updates have been made to the Jacob Napoleon Witherspoon (1856 - 1926) page.  Major updates have been made to the Emanuel Alexander Witherspoon (1859 - 1935) page.

Carolyn & I have three granddaughters, Savanna (age 14), Ali (age 11) and Kayli (age 21 months).  Savanna & Ali are the daughters of Brad & Beth Loftin Seese.  Kayli is the daughter of Philip & Leslie Robinson Loftin.  I've created two new pages for Kayli: Kayli 2013 and 2Kayli 2014.  I've also just created a page to display photos of Ali: Ali 2013 and Savanna 2013.

2. The annual Loftin Family Reunion is held yearly on the third Sunday in May in the Family Life Center of the Catawba Methodist Church.  This year the reunion was held on 18 May 2014 and there were about 60 in attendance.  Be sure to check out all of the photos from the 2014 reunion at the bottom of the Loftin Family Reunion page.

3. I've updated the page Long Life Satisfied with links to ancestor pages who lived to be 80 years old or older.

4. I've updated the page Gone To Soon that deals with ancestors who died early in life, as well as those who died from "unusual" circumstances.  I concentrated mainly on young ancestors who died as a result of war, auto accidents, miscarriages, pneumonia, Typhoid Fever, being scalped, drowned, hangings, Measles, fire and even a logging accident.  Be sure to check it out.

5. Helen Josephine Loftin White, daughter of Arthur Lee Loftin & Josephine Gilleland, and wife of Willard White, fell in the wee hours of the morning on Monday, 18 May 2014.  She split her head open and also broke her hip.  Surgery to repair the hip was scheduled for later that afternoon.  Those of you who attended the 2014 Loftin Family Reunion on Sunday, 18 May 2014, saw her there.

6. I recently got an email from Dennis Pagh Asanovski in Copenhagen, Denmark.  This is what he said:

Dear Curtis Loftin,

This might sounds odd, but I'm looking for a Jack Loftin, who might be my grandfather.

My name is Dennis Pagh Asanovski, i'm a Deputy Judge from Copenhagen, Denmark. I've never known my grandfather on my mother's side. For many years my mother has been trying to locate her father. She's written and called many J. Loftins in many different states, but unfortunately the ones she got a hold of, weren't the right ones ...

My mother was born on February 8th 1958 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her father is, as far as we know, a man named Jack (given or nick name) Loftin from or who at one point lived in Denver, Colorado. He meet my grandmother in Copenhagen in 1956 or 1957 in Copenhagen, where he, again as far as we know, worked as a (flight) engineer. The only piece of paper we have with his name on it is a Danish court document establishing him as my mother's father. The document doesn't state an address or date of birth.

I know it's not a lot to go on, but my grandmother passed away last year, so we unfortunately don't have any more information. If you know anything about a Jack/J. Loftin who worked in Denmark in the mid fifties, I would very much appreciate any help you could give us.

My sister and I have never really been that interested in genealogy, but since our grandmother passed, we've talked about how me might go about finding our grandfather. My two children often ask about their great grandfather, so hopefully one day, I'll be able to tell them more/anything about him.

I hope to hear from you.

Best regards,

Dennis Pagh Asanovski

In April, I was contacted by Tara Bodenstab via email concerning her lineage from Charles Manson Lee Beatty (b.1863).  Charles was the son of Gilbert Lebonon Beatty and his first wife, Adeline Susan Sherrill.  Tara descended from Charles and his second wife, Fannie Belle Setzer (b.1879).  That information was added to the Beatty Family Descendancy page.  Tara also shared photos of Charles and Fannie.  A new web page has been created for Charles Manson Lee Beatty (b. 1863).  I (Curtis) already had photos of grave markers in my files that I took in Jan 2007 and those have also been added to this page also.

1.  I recently received an email from Betsy Ross-Edison, who, like many of us, descend from Pinckney Johnson and Levina Sherrill.  [Pinckney Johnson and Levina Sherrill were the paternal grandparents of Buelah Vernesta Johnson, wife of Martin Luther Goble.]  Betsy had published a historic fiction novel (in two parts) based on the life of Pinckney Johnson.  This is what she had to say:

We were in touch earlier about our great- and great-great grandparents, Lavinia Sherrill  and Pinckney Johnson.  My Dad was Evalina's son and his first name was also Pinckney. This name got me started on a novel.  And I have at last researched and completed a Civil War historical novel now on Amazon Books and on Kindle, entitled:

Pinckney's General, A Novel of the Civil War, Twice Told

It's in two Volumes covering the big complex battles in Virginia and Maryland in which Pinckney fought.  We can be proud of him!  He was in the thick of it and never deserted Lee when at the end men were deserting up to 100 per day from the barren and hungry Petersburg trenches.  I tried very hard in the battles for "historical accuracy."  The book also has a story.

I fell in love with my grandmother's musical sounding and old-timey name of Evalina.  And I found different spellings for Lavinia-Levinia-Lovinia.  Thus in my novel I gave Evalina as the name of Pinckney's wife.  It's historical fiction after all.  So I thought I had some leeway!  If you read it, hope you like the name!

I could not find any details of when the promotion to Corporal was made.  But I will Forward to you a Federal record stating this rank.  That might be good for your website.

Miscellaneous Page Updates

1. The entire southeastern part of the US got one of its largest snow storms ever on February 12-13, 2014.  Catawba County, NC, was no exception during the two-day snow storm and much of the county picked up 10-inches of the the beautiful white stuff.

I always enjoy the snow, but typically don't get out in it.  This time, however, I did go out the day after the snow so that I could take some photos.  Only the main roads had been cleared of snow and many of the back roads had not been scraped, limiting my photography excursion, however.  I did manage to get photos of historic Murray's Mill, the Flora Edwards Stewart house, Providence Memorial Cemetery and some photos of our home (Curtis & Carolyn) in Catawba.

1. I've created a couple of new pages at the end of 2013 and I've continued to work on this during the month of January 2014.  These pages are entitled Curtis Dean Loftin - The High School Years (1967 - 1971), Curtis Dean Loftin - College Years (1971 - 1975), Curtis Dean Loftin - Our Wedding and Curtis Dean Loftin - 30 Years of Teaching (1975 - 2005).  These pages are mainly for my children and grandchildren and tells the story of how Carolyn and I met at college and how the Lord brought us together.  It includes photos from our college days as well as wedding photos.

Curtis: High School, College, Marriage & Teaching

2. Even though the majority of my career was devoted to teaching 8th grade Math, I also taught Reading, English, Spelling, Social Studies, Science, Health & Physical Education.  In 1978, my 8th Grade Reading Group at Catawba Middle School read The Lion, The Witch & the Wardrobe, by C. S. Lewis.  Afterwards we created a photo presentation of the story.  The main students involved in that presentation were David Flynn, Renee Ellis, Chris Brookshire, Scottie Townsend, Gayle Jones, Julie Shook, Todd Setzer and several others.  Those photos are on a page called, Reading 1978.

The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe - 1978 Reading Project

3. In 1979, I was once again teaching "one" Reading class.  This group of students read, D.J.'s Worst Enemy, by one of my favorite children's authors, Robert Burch.  After we finished reading the book, we did a photo presentation for this book.  The main students involved in that presentation were Dayne Miller, Tim Miller, Layman Mitchell, Tera McDaniel, Angiel Roth, David Hester, Mack Byers, Lonnie Evans and Roger Brittain.  Patty Mauney, one of our Teaching Assittants at the time also participated by portraying "Mamma", and I took on the role of "Pa".  Where the 1978 Project had been more difficult because of the fantasy characters, this one was about a family on a farm - and the photos are beautiful - even today.  Those photos are on a page called, Reading 1979.

4. Mathis Chapel Baptist Church in the old Gold Mine area of Catawba County, NC, has been a community church since it was established in 1951.  I've recently added photos of all the grave markers (headstones) in this cemetery to this particular web page.  There are lots of Loftin family members buried there, a few Goble family members, and even two Setzer family members.  The church cemetery also has members of the Sherrill family which we connect to through the Loftin and Goble lines.

5. In the process of working with family records I realized just how many of our ancestors lived to be 80 years old or even older and thought it would be nice to create a webpage with that information for the four main branches of our family - Loftin, Setzer, Goble & Johnson.  I created a page that is called Long Life Satisfied, based on the Scripture from Psalm 91, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation".  Lois Loftin Mundy is currently the oldest relative of the Loftin Family.  Lois is 105 and still living as of January 2013, and her sister Marie Loftin Robinson is 103.

6. I've created a new webpage to host stories of unusual and interesting deaths.  The page is called Gone Too Soon, and includes numerous relatives who died in the Civil War (more from disease than being wounded), typhoid fever, suicide, accidental hanging, drowning, and numerous car accidents.  I've separated them by the four main lines of this genealogy website - Loftin, Setzer, Goble and Johnson.

7. For a long time I've questioned who the father of Hannah Loftin (1728-1810) was.  I knew that Hannah was married to Richard Lewis and that they both died in Iredell County, NC - but were they closely related to the Catawba County, NC, Loftins?  I've recently discovered where Hannah fits into the Loftin Descendancy.  She was born in Maryland, the daughter of (Robert) Thomas Loftin (b. 25 Nov 1691, d. 05 Sep 1751, Baltimore, MD).  Robert Thomas Loftin was the son of William Loftin (b. 1658, Baltimore, MD) & Elizabeth Innes - and William was the son of Leonard "The Immigrant" Loftin (b. bet. 1610-1616).  So, even though there is a Loftin family connection, it is 12 generations back (for me, Curtis).  I have updated that lineage for (Robert) Thomas Loftin on the Loftin Family Descendancy.

8. There are several new webpages: William Loftin (1658-1704) and Robert Thomas Loftin (1691-1751).  There is a Will Abstract for Thomas Loftin that lists his children, including Hannah Loftin Lewis, who I was interested in.  I added a page for Richard Lewis (1721 - 1806) - the husband of Hannah Loftin.

6.  I updated the Sarah Catherine Rebecca "Becky" Goble Bunton webpage, but adding photos of Aunt Becky & Uncle Marvin's Headstone at South River Baptist Church in Statesville, NC.  I also added photos of Clyde, Ralph & Roy's Headstones.  Ralph Bunton served in World War II and I've added the information I found about him to the WWII page. There are a few photos on the gravestones that I did close-ups of, too.  Becky was the sister of Martin Luther Goble.  I updated the Goble Family Descendancy, adding the names of Becky & Marvin's children and their spouses.

Due to the limited amount of information that I have on the Johnson Family, there are only three names on the list of those who lived to the age of 80 or beyond.  Levinia S. Sherrill Johnson, wife of Pinkney C. Johnson, lived to the age of 88 and 11 months.  Her husband Pinkney, however, died at the age of 38 during the Civil War.  Pinkney & Levina's grandson, Henry Pinkney Johnson lived to the age of 84 and 11 months.  Robert Johnson is the farthest back I've been able to trace our branch of the Johnson family.  Robert lived to the age of 86.

4.  I don't often get to work on the Johnson line in my family, simply because I always come to so many roadblocks.  But this month, I managed to find the birth dates, death dates and spouses of most of the children of Levina Sherrill Johnson.  Levina was tthe grandmother of Beulah Vernesta "Nessie" Johnson (wife of Martin Luther Goble).

5.  Also on the Johnson side of the family, I managed to finally find the birth and death date of Geneva Mae Johnson, the wife of John Paul Baldwin.  I also added Paul's birth & death dates and the names of his parents.  I also added the burial location for Paul and Mae.  Mae was the first born child of Beulah Vernesta "Nessie" Johnson (wife of Martin Luther Goble).  Mae was also a half-sister to Ethel, Leggs, J.C., Harlee, Lib, Helen, Willie and Elgevia Goble.

6.  I updated the Mary Helen Goble webpage.  Helen was the wife of Floyd Sigmon.  Floyd and Helen had three children and they all died in childhood.  I've added photos, copies of Death Certificates and stories about their deaths.  Helen was the daughter of Martin Luther Goble and Beulah Vernesta "Nessie" Johnson and the granddaughter of John Henry Johnson and Mary Caroline Leslie.

7. Over the past five years (or more), I've worked on trying to follow the life of Victoria E. Johnson.  I knew that Vickie was born about 1869 and that she was listed on the 1870 Iredell County Census as being one year old and living with Levina Sherrill Johnson.  The 1880 Census lists Vickie as Levina's daughter, but I'm not sure that she was.  I know that Levina's husband, Pinkney C. Johnson, was killed during the Civil War in 1865, so he could not have been Vickie's father.  Vickie was listed as White on the 1870 Census but Mulato (half white, half black) on the 1880 Census.  Vickie's name shows up again in 1889 when she married Martin Grier Carrigan.  The page I've created follows Vickie's life, the life of her husband's family, and the lives of her two children.  I especially found the "life path" that her son Clyde took to be very interesting.

8. I added a page for Richard Lewis (1721 - 1806).  Richard was the husband of Hannah Loftin.  Richard was the brother of John Lewis (1720 - 1802).  Richard & John were the sons of David Lewis & Mary Crawford. The David Lewis page is also new.  The Lewis line connects to the Johnson and the Loftin lines.  I also updated the Lewis Descendancy page (which shows the Johnson and Goble lines)

Miscellaneous Page Updates

1.  After midnight on  (Monday) Tuesday morning, 07 Jan 2014, the temperatures in Catawba County, NC, plummeted to 4 degrees Fahrenheit, with a wind-chill even colder than that.  Needless to say, anywhere there was water, it froze.  It provided a nice winter display at Murray's Mill, too.  To see larger copies of the photos, follow the link to the Murray's Mill page.

Ice on the pond, on the dam and wheel from 08 Jan 2014

2.  I (Cutis) have been teaching Israeli Folk Dance for about twenty-five years.  I currently teach a class at Covenant Bible Church in Lincolnton, NC, on the first & third Tuesdays of each month.  Back in November I was invited to come to High Point to teach Israeli Folk Dance to a Ballet Troup called Arts Evangelica who are planning to go to Israel in March 2014 to dance at some of the IDF bases there.  They wanted to learn some the Israeli Folk Dances so they could use these, too.  Carolyn and myself, along with Myrl Peeler and Gloria Cunningham-McGraw (two of my dancers from Covenant) went with me, on Saturday 11 Jan 2014.  To see the photos of the class, go to 2014.  To see a few of our performances, go to Dance Performances.

3.  I updated the Providence Memorial Cemetery webpage.  Even though I've concentrated on the Hamilton branch of the family, there are some Loftin relatives buried in the new cemetery, including Betty Jo Loftin Abernathy.  I've decided to document the headstones in the old part of the cemetery and as I have time (and warmer weather) I'll take more photos and add those to the Providence Memorial Cemetery - even those who are not part of the family.  I've also decided to add a few additional photos to the new cemetery, also.
