The 1870 Census shows Edmund, age 58, married to Mary Reynolds Loftin, age 35, and living in the Fallstown Township of Iredell County.  Edmund's four older children had moved away from the family farm - apparently married.  Three younger children were listed on the census: Thomas (Smith), age 6, Sarah J., age 3, and Dovey A., age 1.

The 1880 Iredell County Census for Fallstown Township shows Edmund and Mary still living on the family farm.  There was a new child, Minnie, who was born since the last census (1870).  Thomas' age is listed as 16 and the census shows that even though he worked on the family farm, he still had time to attend school that year and that he could read and write.

The 1920 Census of Fallstown Township in Iredell County lists Thomas' age as 53.  In addition to Thomas and Mary, Thomas' widowed half-sister Emmy Howell (Mrs. Jefferson Howell), age 77, was also living with the family.  Six of Thomas & Mary's children were still living at home: David, Tate, Mary, John, Guy and Fred.

Thomas lived on a farm on the East Monbo Road.  Some of the estate was previously owned by Jeff Howell and Emma (Loftin) Howell, who was a daughter from the first marriage of Edmund Loftin.  The Howell farm title was transferred to Thomas Smith Loftin prior to Jeff Howell's death.  It was agreed that the Thomas Smith Loftin family would take care of Howell's wife, Emma (Loftin) Howell, for the remainder of her life.  She died on the farm in May of 1923.
