The Beatty Family
Name Origin: England & Scotland
The Beattys of North Carolina are the descendants of one of the oldest clans of Scotland - the Beatons. The Beatons came to Scotland from Ireland in the 13th Century. The Gaelic form "Mac Bheaths" was soon anglicized to MacBeth and then later to Beaton. Beattie as a separate and distinct surname can first be found in a listing of the border clans of Scotland for the year 1597.
There were Beatties in northern counties of Ireland by the 1600s. They were probably among those thousands of Scots who were removed to Ireland in an attempt to establish the Protestant faith on Irish soil. There were also Beattie family members who joined the Stuart cause against the British crown in the Jacobite Rebellions of 1715 and 1745.
