is listed on the Census as maimed, crippled or disabled - which
could have been the result of an injury when he served in the

The 1900 Cabarrus County Census shows Joe and Mamie living in
Concord, NC with their two children (Arnold, age 3, and Mattie,
age 1 month). Mamie's sister Emma was also living with the
Miller family as well as a boarder named Lula Johnston. The
Census indicates that Mamie was born in April 1877 and Joe was
born in Jan 1875. Joe, Emma and Lula were all working at
the local cotton mill as weavers. |

at the cotton mill. The census shows 4 children: (William)

Henry (age 4) and Joe Shinn (age 13 months). |

The 1920 Census shows Joe and Mamie still living in Concord,
Cabarrus County, NC, in Ward 1 - on Spring Street. Joe's
age was 45 and Mamie was 43. He was working as a loom
fixer at the cotton mill. Mamie was working as a weaver at
the cotton mill and their son, William Arnold, was working as a
laborer at the cotton mill. The census show Joe and Mamie
as well as their five (living) children: William Arnold (age
23), Claude Henry (age 13), Joe Shinn (age 13), Hazel W. (age 5)
- as well as eldest daughter Martha Elizabeth "Mattie" (age 19).
Sons George Lafayette Miller (died 1907) and Raymond King Miller
(died 1918) were no longer living. |

(almost 64). The death certificate lists her parents as
Henry Fink and Catherin Martin. The informant was her
husband, S. W. B. Miller and the cause of death was listed as
"cardio vascular ?? disease". She died in Concord,
Cabarrus County, NC. |
