James Osborne Lasley/Leslie

Born: Mar/June 1841
Died:  1911

James Osborne Lasley/Leslie was born either in the month of March or June - between the years of 1836 to 1842. Most early records (1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census) seem to indicate that he was born in 1841. His parents were  James Q. Lasley/Leslie and "Unknown" Mother.

The 1850 Iredell County, NC, Census, shows James Q. Leslie, age 35 (although he was more than likely around 43), living in Iredell County with his family.  James Osborne Leslie was 9 years old and his mother was deceased.  His siblings were William (age 20), Amanda (age 14), Elizabeth (age 12) and Jane (age 7).

According to the 1860 Iredell County Census, James Q. Leslie and his new wife Sarah Caroline Fink Leslie were living in Statesville, NC, and the family name was spelled "Leslie".  James Q's three children from a previous marriage (Margaret, James and Martha) were living with them, as well as their daughter Nancy Caroline.  James Osborne Leslie's age is listed as 19r.

James Osborne Leslie in the American Civil War
The American Civil War began on 12 Apr 1862 when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter, SC. James O. Leslie enlisted in the Confederacy on 14 May 1862 in Iredell County, NC, at the age of 24 where he served in Company C, NC 48th Infantry Regiment. According to records, he was 24 years old at the time - indicating that he may have been born in 1838 instead of 1841.

The following marriage record shows the marriage date for James Q. Leslie and Sarah Caroline Fink - James Osborne Leslie's father and step-mother.

This record also lists the marriage of James Osborne  Leslie and Sophia Lillian Plyler on 20 Nov 1866 with Justice of the Peace, W. B. Grant.

The 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census show "brother-in-law", John W. Smithdeal, living with James and Sophie Leslie, indicating that she was most probably a widow (and maybe even a war widow) and that her birth name was Sophia Lillian Smithdeal.

The 1860 Census shows Henry Plyler, age 21, and his wife, Sophia, age 18, living in Iredell County, NC.

There was indeed a James Henry Plyler who enlisted with the Confederacy during the Civil War on 07 Jun 1861 in Iredell County, NC.  He served with Company A, NC 33rd Infantry Regiment. There is also an indication that he "mustered out" on 04 Jun 1864.  But the same record also indicates that he did not survive the war.

The 1870 Census shows James Osborne Leslie (age 30) and Sophia (age 25) living in the Statesville Township of Iredell County, NC.  John Smithdeal (age 14) was his brother-in-law.

By 1900 the Leslie and Smithdeal families were living on Cooks Cross Roads in Cabarass County, NC. The 1900 Census listed John W. Smithdeal as the "Head" of the family. James O. Leslie's age was listed as "64" but if earlier Census records are correct, he would have been 69. This Census says that James was born in Mar 1836 and the Sophie was born in Aprl 1839. The Census also shows that Sophia had given birth to "1" child but "0" were still living.
