Washington Lafayette Loftin was the sixth child born to James Franklin Loftin and Frances "Franky" Elizabeth FisherFate, as he was called by family and friends, was born 20 Jun 1859 in Catawba County.
 
 
According to the 1860 Catawba County, NC, Census, Lafayette was 1 year old and living in Catawba Station with his parents and siblings.

Fate's father, James Franklin Loftin, was killed during the Civil War in 1864.  According to the 1870 Catawba County Census, Fate was 13 years old and living with his mother and siblings in the Hamilton Township of Catawba Station.  According to the census, Fate could read but could not write.

According to the 1880 Catawba County Census, Fate (Washington L.) was 20 years old and still living at home with his 52 year old mother and 17 year old brother, Oliver Cromwell LoftinFate's occupation was listed as working on the family farm.  Fate's elder brother, William Alexander Loftin, had married Laura Rossie Cranford and they lived nearby with their young family.

According to the 1900 Catawba County Census, Fate and Margaret were living in the Caldwell Township. There were three children living in the house as well as Margaret's 80 year old Aunt.  Fate's age was 40 and his occupation was listed as a salesman.

By 1910, only Fate and Margaret's daughter Pearl was living in the family home.  There had been an Infant Son born 06 Oct 1906 but he didn't live.  Sons Patrick and Other Frederick Loftin had married.  Fred's farm was nearby that of Fate and Margaret.

According to the 1920 Catawba County Census, Lafayatte, Margaret and Pearl were still living on the family farm in Caldwell Township.  Fate's age is listed as 60.  Fate and Margaret's son, Fred, continued to live nearby with his growing family.

Margaret died 27 Mar 1928 and Fate married Charlotte Caroline DrumCharlotte was born on 21 Jul 1861.  Pearl continued to live with her father.  The 1930 Catawba County Census lists Pearl's occupation as missionary.  Fate's age was 70.
