Center
Methodist Church |
|
4945 Sherrills Ford Road
Catawba, NC 28609 |
|
Organized: 1887 |
|
|
|
The beginnings of Center Church date from 1887, when a group of
concerned citizens met at the Walden School House, located near
Harwell and Lowrance Roads intersect. Some of the people
there were in the congregation of Shiloh, a Methodist Episcopal
Church, and they were motivated to organize the new communion
due to friction dating from the War Between the States.
Response to the meeting was encouraging and a brush arbor was
constructed near the site where Center now stands. The
following men were chosen as leaders of the new congregation: |
|
Alexander Blaylock, Francis Drum, Pinkney Durant Drum, James T.
Harwell,
William
Alexander Loftin and Gilbert A. McKinnis. |

Land for a permanent place of worship was given by Mr. Joseph
Beal, and a deed for the property was drawn in 1888 with James
T. Harwell, T. L. Jones and Alexander Blaylock as the first
trustees. Construction was begun as the congregation met
first at Walden School and later at the brush arbor. The
building was to be constructed of wood and the framing was
donated by Pinkney D. Drum, who operated a saw mill.
Handmade shingles were given by Jacob W. Bandy and special
mention is noted of the Noah Frye Family who were Lutheran, but
Mr. Frye gave his time as a carpenter and his wife cooked many
meals for the pastor during construction. |
|
Mary H. Lineberger, who attended the church from the beginning
and who is now deceased, left a few written notes of her
memories. The following are excerpts just as she wrote
them. |
|
"People came from all around. Mrs. Pink Jones was my
teacher. (She) came from Stanley. Lived where Eugene
Harwell now lives. She was a wonderful woman. She
and her children walked to Walden every Sunday while we
worshiped there. As I remember, the church was built in
the year 1988. First had a brush arbor made from post
covered with slats, brush laid on top of them. Was here
where this building now stands. Mrs. Jones' husband was
our first superintendent at Center. We had fine preachers.
Their salary was very small. My father was secretary.
I remember they paid (the pastor) $3.75 a quarter. Later
$7.75. At Walden our mother put us on a long bench in
front of them (preachers). Didn't allow us to talk or look
back. Think I can remember the S.S. (Sunday School)
Superintendents. Walden: Tommy Drum.
Center: Pink Jones, Wesley Drum, Jake Bandy, James T.
Harwell, Loss Rudisill, Francis Drum, W. L. Alley, Mrs. John
Rudisill, Glenn Setzer, Bazel Stiles, Charley Dettor, Tamp
Bandy and Harold Mundy." |
|
|
In early 1890, the Reverend C. M. Gentry, a minister in The
Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was appointed pastor as
Center was added to the Catawba Charge. The first service
was held in the church in June 1890 although it was not finished
until later that year. The church had two doors and Fred
Rudisill recalls that the women used the one on the right and
the men used the left door. |
|
|
|
Mrs. Carrie Lee has an old record book showing payments and
conference minutes with this handwritten in the front: |
|
"Record Book for Center Church, for Church Conference Secretary
to keep pay-roll in, and to record minutes of church conferences
in. Make a new pay-roll every year. This Sept. 30th,
1891. C. M. Gentry, Pastor" |

"The first church conference of Center Church, Statesville
District, W.N.C. Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church,
South, convened at church May 20, 1893, M.M. Downu, P.C, in the
chair. After religious services conducted by P.C, the
following inquires were made: |
|
1. Who is elected Secretary? J. T. Harwell.
2. Shall the roll be called? Yes.
3. Shall the roll be revised by striking from or restoring
any names to it? Yes |
|
|
"The P.C. reported as follows: I have filled all my
appointments at this church, this year except one, when I was
called to a burial. Am planning for better work, and
praying for success therein. Brethren, I need and ask your
help in prayer and work. Rec'd by certificate: E. W.
Bandy, Jan. 23 1893 and Isabella Loftin, Feb 20, 1893 and
Martha Seitz, May 2, 1893. Removed by death: Delitha
Sherrill, Jan 15, 1893. J. M. Downum, P.C." |
|
The second 1893 conference was held as scheduled and the Pastor
reports Bessie Jane Setzer, daughter of G. P. and C. S. Setzer,
was baptized, May 20th and R. M. Drum received by certificate on
July 15th. The Sunday School has sixty members, a
superintendent and four teachers. |
|
The church was rebuilt in 1926 and the new structure had a
center door and Sunday School rooms in extended sides of the
sanctuary. Pink Setzer, Danierl Setzer and Harry Sigmon
gave the timber for the new weather boarding. |

|
In 1944, this building was brick veneered and was remodeled
under the direction of Lee Lineberger, J. R. McKinnis, Fred
Rudisill and Harry Sigmon. Later, about 1949, new pews and
central heat were installed. In the winter of 1982-83, the
church was air--conditioned. |
|
|
|
During the pastorate of Rev. W. E. Rufty in 1959, plans were
made for an educational building. A committee composed of
James T. Harwell, Fred Rudisill and Glenn Rudisill was elected
and construction began in 1959. The new building was
completed in July of 1960 with ten classrooms, church school
office, restrooms, a modern kitchen and large fellowship hall at
a cost of $40,000. The debt was retired in January 1964
and a dedication service held on September 13, 1964 with Rev.
Cecil G. Hefner, D.S. assisting the pastor, Rev. Byron Shankle. |
|
A modern parsonage was built by Center and Pisgah when Frank
Pennigar was the minister of the Balls Creek Charge, and Rev. M.
C. Ellerbe was the first pastor of the Center-Pisgah Charge when
he was called out of retirement in 1969. |
|
Center was on the Catawba Charge from 1888 to 1919, the
Claremont Circuit till 1920 with Mountain View, Bethlehem,
Pisgah, St. Paul and Friendship, and the Balls Creek Charge from
1920 to 1969 when the Center-Pisgah Charge was organized.
Bethlehem was only with the above group for one year and after a
few years, St. Paul was returned to the Maiden Charge leaving
only four churches on the Charge. |
|
The first four pastors of Center are named in the book of
records of the 1890s as: Rev. C. M. Gentry, Rev. J. M. Downum,
Rev. C. C. Brothers and Rev. J. D. Bowie. Pastors who
served from 1900 to 1919 are unknown at this writing but the
following listing shows appointments from 1919. |
