Memories of Grandmother Sadie
by Diane Setzer Poovey

I used to love to spend the night with "Momaw" when she was younger.  Linda (Sadie's youngest daughter) was our age so that is why we spent the night there some.

Momaw was a very hardworking woman.  I think that from the time she got up she was wide open working.  She did not have a lazy bone in her body.

I recall the times when we would be there and she would kill a chicken.  She did not have a lot of mercy on them.  She would take that axe and chop their heads off like there was nothing to it.  I saw her one time when she did ring-their-necks to kill them.  She would put them in scalding water and then pluck the feathers off.  She was such a joy to be around.

Later, when Momaw was older, she and Mom (Joyce Murray Setzer) would come to the beauty shop together (that I owned and managed at my home).  Mom would go and pick her up and that was their day to spend together.  Momaw was a classy lady.  She always wanted her earrings on when I would finish her hair.

She was so pretty and kind to everyone.  I never heard her say a bad word about anyone in all the years I was around her.  I enjoyed taking her shopping when she was still able to go.  It was like she valued my opinion and that made me feel good to know that what I said meant a lot to her.

Momaw loved making cakes and if you ever went there for a visit, she always had some kind of cake to serve you.  I always loved her chocolate pound cakes and she knew that.

Campmeeting was fun, too.  She would always tell us to come out anytime we wanted.  She always had something good to eat.  Momaw loved to cook and see people eat.   I guess that is where my mom got all her good traits.
