Theodore
Roosevelt Loftin was born 25 Dec 1906 in Catawba County, NC, to
Alonzo Lester Loftin and Ida Lillian Setzer. Theodore was
called "Speed" or "Speedo" by his family and friends. |
|
According to Speed's daughter, Peggy Loftin Brotherton, he used
to drive his car around the Gold Mine really fast and he
acquired the nickname "Speed" as a result. |

As a young
man, Speedo decided to go to Maryland to take barber lessons.
His ½ sister, Floye Ellers, was living there at the time and he stayed
with her while he was there.
When he came
back home, he married Fannie Marie Hoke.
|
Speedo
and Marie lived in the Loftin’s small 2-room house and he ran a
small store on the corner of Sherrills Ford Rd. and E. Bandys
Rd. According to Peggy Loftin Brotherton, he even cut hair at
their house for a short period of time.
|
Eventually,
Speedo purchased property on Sherrills Ford Rd., near Alonzo and
Ida, and built his own home there. Speedo owned and operated a
bar and grill next to the house. |
Peggy Loftin
Brotherton said that people frequently came to her Dad with no
place to live. He wanted to help, so Speedo bought and moved
some tenant houses from the Long Island Cotton Mill to his
property. He also built several other houses there. He
charged $25 for rent. There were 12 buildings in the Village,
including Speedo’s bar and grill and his own home. |
