Martha moved to Berlin with her father when he took up his position as the American ambassador there. In 1939, she published a book on her experiences in Nazi Germany titled "Through Embassy Eyes" and later in 1941, with the help of her brother, "Ambassador Dodd's Diary, 1933-1938". Finally in 1945 Martha published a novel based on Nazi Germany titled "Sowing the Wind".
