Victoria E.
Johnson |
|
 |
Born: 1869, North Carolina Died:
Before 1900 |
|
Victoria "Vickie" E. Johnson was born about 1869, more than likely
in Iredell County, NC. |
|
Vickie
first appears on the 1870 Iredell County Census with the family
of
Levina/Viney C. Sherrill Johnson where she is listed as
Levina's "daughter". Levina's husband,
Pinkney C. Johnson, was killed in the Civil war in 1865 and
his last child, John Henry Pinkney Johnson, was born a few weeks
later. Since Vickie was born about 1869, Pinkney could not
have been her father and there is no indication who the
biological father could have been. |

The 1870 Census shows
Levina/Viney living in Iredell County.
None of the children living with her and Pinkey
in 1860 were still living with her at the time of the 1870
census, but there are 3 new children. Julia and Henry were
the youngest children of Pinkney and Levina. |
|
Vickie's name is listed as "Wickie E.".
She is one year old, female and her race is listed as "W"
(White). It also shows that
she was born in North Carolina. |

We know that there were several other children that Levina
helped raise after the death of her husband, Pinkney C. Johnson. |
|
|
|
|
|
By 1880, several of Levina's (listed
as L. C.) daughters have moved back home with
her, including M. G. Johnson (Margaret Elizabeth Johnson) and M. L. E.
Johnson (Louisa Eveline Johnson). Daughter Julia, age 18,
and son Henry, age 15, were still living with Levina. |
|
Vickie/Victoria, age 11, was still living with the family.
Her race had been listed as white on the 1870 Census, but the
1880 Census lists her race as "Mu" (Mulatto) - or half black and
half white. |
|
The 1880 Census
also show that Viney had four
grandchildren living at the family home, too. They were
Joseph Johnson, Nora Johnson, G. H. Johnson and William F
Johnson. There was no indication as to who their mothers or
fathers were. They probably were NOT the children of
Margaret Elizabeth Johnson since she married Henry H. Morrison
in 1881 and none of these names are listed on the 1900 Census
for Margaret and Henry. They must have been the children of either Alfred Freeland Johnson, James
Harvey Johnson, Eliza Jane Johnson (Blankenship) or Louisa Eveline
Johnson (Edison). |

Vickie Johnson married
Martin Grier Carrigan
on 20 Feb 1889 in Taylorsville, Alexander County, NC. |
|
The following article from The Statesville Record & Landmark
dated Thursday, 28 Feb 1889, announces their marriage as well as
Vickie's mixed race. |

Newspaper 1889: Feb 28, 1889,
W.G. Bogle, Esq., of Taylorsville, mayor, squire, United States
commissioner, etc., performed a marriage ceremony at
Taylorsville last Thursday between two well known people of
Shiloh Township, Iredell county. The high contracting parties
were Grier Carrigan, a son of our old friend Israel,
and Vic. Johnson, who is half Caucasian and half African.
|
|
|
|
Vickie married Grier on 20 Feb 1889 in Alexander County, NC.
They had two children: Clide/Clyde and Bertha Mae Carrigan.
Clide/Clyde was born several years before their marriage. |

The following newspaper article appeared in The Statesville
Record & Landmark on 14 Nov 1889 just days before Grier and
Vickie's second child, Bertha, was born. It shows that the
local court has found Grier and Vickie guilty of miscegenation
(the interbreeding of two people from different races). As
a result of this verdict, Grier was given 30 days to leave the
"State", but judgment against Vickie was suspended. |

|
There is no indication of what happened to Vickie after this.
No additional records have been found for her.
Grier and Vickie must have divorced or perhaps simply separated,
because he married Mollie G. Mayberry prior to 1900 and
the couple appear in the Concord Township on the 1900 Iredell
County Census. |
|
|
|
Vickie's half sister,
Eliza Jane
Johnson, married James Calvin Blankenship about 1893.
Eliza Jane and James never had any children of their own
but they did help raise several, including Vickie and Grier
Carrigan's son, Clide/Clyde. |
|
The 1910 Iredell County Census shows those living with James
& Eliza Jane Blankenship. Clide Kerrigan (Clyde Carrigan),
was listed as "mulatto" and his relationship was nephew.
His age is listed as 22, but in reality he would have been 23
and actually turning 24 later that year. |

Clyde Carrigan |
|
Clyde Carrigan was born 29 Dec 1886. |
|
The 1900 Iredell County, NC, Census shows Clyde/Clide Carrigan
living in the Shiloh Township with the Odis Hollar family.
Clyde was 13 years old and working as a servant. His race
was listed as "W" (White). |
|
The 1910 Iredell County, NC, Census (Shown Above) shows Clyde (Clide)
living with the James Calvin Blankenship family in the Shiloh
Township. Clyde is listed as "Mulato" and as the nephew of
James Blankenship, but he would actually have been the nephew
(or grand nephew) of James' wife, Eliza Jane Johnson Blankenship. |
|
By June 1917, Clyde was 19 years old and apparently had decided
to head out west. More than likely he realized that he had
little chance of moving ahead as a "white" man in an area where
everyone knew that his mother (Vickie Johnson Carrigan) was only
half-white. In the US, during that period of time, if there was any
part of your heritage that was "Negro/Black", you were
considered 100% "Black". |
|
Clyde Carrigan's WWI Draft Registration shows that he was living
in Armington, Cascade County, Montana. His birth date is
listed as 29 Dec 1886 and his race was listed as
"Caucasian/White". The Draft Registration shows that he
was born in Stoney Point, NC, and that he was currently working
as a farmer at F. P. Flarex. It is shown that Clyde also
had a wife, although her name is not listed. His Draft
Registration lists his physical description as medium tall,
medium size or weight, with grey eyes and black hair. The
date of the Draft Registration was 05 Jun 1917. |
|
 |
|
In 1920, Clyde was living on a farm in Neil Creek, Cascade
County, Montana, with a widow named Lulu B. Peterson. Mrs.
Peterson was 46 years old and was originally from Sweden.
She had three "laborers" working on her farm: (1) Steven Jenses,
age 47, from Denmark, (2) Andrew L. Year, age 38, from Wyoming,
and (3) Clyde Carrigan, age 30, from North Carolina. This
Census says that Clyde was "S" (Single). |
|
By 1930, Clyde had moved on to California. The 1930 Census
shows him living in Orosi, Tulare County, California, with a 52
year old widow names Anna A. Jackson, and her 11 year old
daughter, Peggy. Clyde is listed as a "Boarder" and his
age is 42. The Census shows that he was born in NC.
He was working as a farm laborer. |
|
By 1940, Clyde was living in the town of Dinuba in Tulare
County, California. He was renting a home with a real
estate value of $8. Clyde was 53 and still single.
This particular Census also says that he had no schooling, which
is not unusual for a mixed-race child born in 1886 from North
Carolina. He had
a housekeeper living with him named Sarah Broder. |
|
Clyde married Eva Mehling Myole on 19 Jun 1955. He was 67
years old and living in San Luis, Obispo County, California, at
the time. |
|
The San Luis Obispo, California, City Directory shows Clyde and
Eva living at 5315 Olmeda av Atas, San Luis Obispo, California,
in 1958. |
|
At the time of Clyde's death, he was living at 93442 Morro Bay,
San Luis, Obispo County, California. |
|
Clyde died on 1 May 1966 and was buried at the
Cayucos-Morro Bay District Cemetery, in San Luis Obispo County,
California. His Plot at the cemetery is Sec 1 "Blk" 20. |
|
The California Death Index lists Clyde's birth date as 29 Dec
1886 and his death date as 1 May 1966. It also lists his
mother's maiden name as Johnson (Vickie Johnson). |
|
A little more information about Clyde's wife Eva Mehling Moyle: |
The 1940 Census shows Eva, age 43, living is Orosi, Tulare
County, California, with her husband Grover D. Moyle.
Grover was 47 years old. He and Eva had a 4 year old
daughter named Adeline Joyce Moyle. Eva was born in
Germany, had a 7th grade education, was a Naturalized Citizen,
and was working as a seamstress. It appears that she was
born 28 Jul 1896. Eva's husband Grover died in Jan 1955
and she married Clyde Carrigan in Jun 1955. |
|
After the death of Eva's second husband, Clyde Carrigan, in
1966, she married Paul A. Langlois, age 76, on 01 Jun 1969, in
San Louis Obispo County, California. Eva died on 23 Jul
1977 in San Luis Obispo, California. |
