Jacob Napoleon Witherspoon was the sixth child born to Miles Rankin Witherspoon and Sarah "Sallie" Elizabeth Aderholdt.  Jacob was born 07 Oct 1856 in Catawba County, NC.

 
 

In 1860, Miles Rankin and Sarah were living in Catawba Station and had seven children.  Jacob Napoleon Witherspoon was 4 years old.

The 1870 Catawba County Census show the Witherspoon family living in the Hamilton Township of Catawba Station, NC.  Miles and Sarah had six children: John Hart, Thomas Aderholdt, David Hoyle, Jacob Napoleon, Emanuel Alexander and Leander Denford.  Denford was 8 years old.

In 1910 Jacob and Candace were living on their family farm with their daughter Lillie, her husband Arthur Stamey Lowrance (b. 23 Aug 1879 - d. 08 Nov 1971), as well as their four children: Clady Lee, Ida Vivian, Floyd and Floy.  Jacob's brother Denford Witherspoon was living nearby.
