In 1910 Denford and Lydia were still living in the Catawba
Township with seven of their children. Oldest son, Ivey
Aderholdt Witherspoon, was no longer living on the family farm.
Dense and Lydia had two more children born since the 1900
Census: Marvin and Loy. Denford's older brother, James
Napoleon Witherspoon and his family were living nearby.
The census further indicates that Lydia had born nine children
but only 8 were still living - indicating that a third child had
been born (but died) since the last census. |

Lydia died
19 Mar 1926 in
Catawba, Catawba County, NC. Her Death Certificate lists
the Cause of Death as "Influenza". She was 59 years old.
Her mother's name is incorrectly listed. |
|
Death Certificate for Lydia
"Liddie" Caroline Hawn Witherspoon |
 |
|
|
|
The 1930 Census shows Denford living in the Catawba Township of
Catawba County, NC. He was 68 years old and still working
as a "Farmer". |
|
Leander's son, Clarence Bryant Witherspoon was living with him
on the farm. Clarence had married Birdie Lee Mundy (b. 30
Jan 1892, Catawba Springs, Lincoln Co, NC) on 07 Oct 1920 when
she was 23 and he was 26. Birdie was the daughter of
Osborn Wells Mundy and Frances "Fannie" Emma King.
Unfortunately, Birdie died 22 Mar 1926 in Statesville, Iredell
County, NC. The cause of her death was listed as
"Influenza" complicated by "Pneumonia". Clarence's
marriage to Birdie produced three children: Frances K.
Witherspoon (1922 - 1922), Osborne D. Witherspoon (b. 1922) and
Inez Carolyn Witherspoon (1923 - 2011). After Birdie's
death, Clarence married Cora Mae McMillion McGee on 10 Aug 1927
in Cocke County, TN. Cora was the daughter of Samuel McGee
and Sarah Clayton. This 1930 Census shows Clarence, with
his wife, Cora (age 32), and two of his children by his first
marriage, Osborn D. (age 8) and Inez Caroline (age 6).
Clarence's two marriages explains what appears to be a conflict
between Clarence and Cora's "Age" and the "Age when 1st
Married". |

The 1940 Census shows Leander Denford Lutz Witherspoon living in
the Catawba Township of Catawba County, NC. He was 78, and
still working "30" hours a week on the family farm. This
Census shows that Leander had completed 7 years of school, but
the 1930 Census shows that he can't read or write. |
|
Clarence (age 41) and his wife Cora (age 41) continue to live
with his father. His two children from his marriage to
Birdie Mundy are still on the family farm. Osborne is 18
and Izez is 16. |
|
There are some inconsistencies with this Census. Since
Denford was the listed as the head of the house, Cora should
have been listed as a "Daughter-in-Law" instead of a "Wife" and
Clarence's two children (Osborn and Inez) should be listed as
"Grandchildren" - but none of them were. The Census Taker
chose to list Cora as "Wife" and Clarence's children as a "Son"
and "Daughter". That would be fine except that there is a
third child on the farm this year: Joe E. Witherspoon (age 8)
who is listed as a "grandson". Since the Census Taker
didn't list Osborn and Inez as "Grandchildren", why would they
suddenly choose to list Joe as a "Grandson" - unless he was the
son of another one of Leander's children. But then, that's
still the inconsistency of how Osborn and Inez were listed. |
