Providence
Memorial Cemetery |
|
E Hwy 10
Catawba, North Carolina 28609 |
|
Organized: 1853 |
|
Providence Memorial Cemetery is located on E. Hwy 10 about two
miles south of Catawba, NC. The cemetery was established
in 1853 on the property of Reuben Hamilton and was called Providence Baptist Church.
(See letter from Drury Hamilton dated August 15, 1955,
BELOW) The church eventually
either burned or disbanded leaving the cemetery uncared for. |
|
According to Lena Young Ramsey (in a phone conversation on 02
Sep 2011), in 1952 "Mr. Huitt" cut and sold timber from the
property eventually giving the proceeds from the sell of the
timber to Catawba Baptist Church, Catawba Methodist Church and
Redeemer Lutheran Church (also located in the town of Catawba)
for the upkeep of the cemetery. All 3 churches continue to
provide upkeep for the cemetery and still have church members
who are buried there. |
|
Highway 10 currently runs on the west side of the cemetery, but
according to Lena the old road ran from Catawba to Murray's Mill
and was located on the eastern side of the cemetery. |
|
The cemetery is divided into two parts - the old cemetery and
the new cemetery. |

The following is a letter written by
Drury Hamilton who is buried in the
Old Providence Memorial Cemetery. |
|
Drury Hamilton to his Uncle, Ninian B. Hamilton
From THE HAMILTON LETTERS |
Letter Dated: August 15, 1855 |
From: Drury Hamilton (age 53) |
Living In: Newton, NC |
To: Ninian Hamilton (b. 1789 - Uncle) (age 66) |
Living In: Pekin P. O., Washington Co., Indiana |
|
Uncle Ninian:
I write a few lines on this slip of paper - in the
first place to correct the date of my letter - it should be the
15th instead of the 22nd I did not think of the mistake untill I
had sealed it.
(He was
60
mistaken - his letter was dated the 15th; MS).
I
will inform you that we have built a church at my father's
(Reuben
Hamilton) at
the graveyard - it is called Providence. It is lately finished -
It is a Baptist church - there is about 40 members in it. They
held a protracted meeting there which begun last Friday and
lasted five days - several joined and among them was my old
father
(Reuben
Hamilton; RHR).
He was baptized yesterday.
I have nothing more particular to write at this time -
only we have had a very heavy rain today, with some hail.
Write to me as soon as you receive this letter - the last letter you wrote
me was three months on the road before it reached me. In the
future you will be pleased to direct your letters to Long Island
post-office, Catawba County, N. C. |
Yours truly, |
Drury Hamilton |
