Catawba Middle School

403 6th Ave
Catawba, NC  28609

1976 - 1999

When North Carolina established the middle school theory of education, Catawba Middle School was established in the Fall of 1976 from the former Catawba Rosenwald School.  Frank L. Pendergrass was the first principal.  The school educated 7th and 8th grade students from the following feeder schools: Sherrills Ford Elementary, Claremont Elementary and Oxford Elementary.

Opened originally in 1927, Catawba Rosenwald School served African American students in grades 1-10 and later 1-12. It was named for Julius Rosenwald, President of Sears, Roebuck and Company. Rosenwald initiated a school building program that had a dramatic impact on the face of the rural South and in the lives of its African-American residents. Through the Julius Rosenwald Foundation, more than 5300 schools, shop buildings and teachers houses were built by, and for, African-Americans across the South and Southwest until the program was discontinued in 1932. The original buildings have long since been torn down, but an addition opened in 1942 still exists as part of today’s facilities along with the newest buildings added in 1965. With integration, the school was renamed Catawba Rosenwald Elementary School, Catawba Primary School, Catawba Elementary school and later Catawba Middle School.  1999 was the last year that the facility was used as Catawba Middle School.  Middle school students moved to two new middle schools [River Bend Middle (for Bunker Hill students) and Mill Creek Middle (for Bandys students)] in the Fall of 1999.  The Catawba facility then became Catawba Intermediate School and housed 6th grade students for overflowing elementary schools in the area.  When a new Catawba Elementary School was constructed on Hudson Chapel Rd, the former Catawba Intermediate school became Catawba Rosenwald Education Center.

Catawba Middle School was in existence for 23 years until new middle schools were built near Bunker Hill and Bandys High Schools.  At that time, the students and faculty split - 1/2 going to River Bend Middle School and the other 1/2 to Mill Creek Middle School.
