John Hart Witherspoon was the third child born to Miles Rankin Witherspoon and Sarah "Sallie" Elizabeth Aderholdt.  John Hart was born 02 Jan 1850 in Catawba County, NC.

 
 
 

In 1860, Miles Rankin Witherspoon and and his wife Sarah were living in Catawba Station area of Catawba Cocunty, NC,  and had seven children.  John Hart was 10 years old.

John Hart married Mary Elizabeth Carpenter about 1973.  Mary was born 14 May 1852 in Cleveland County, NC.  She was the daughter of William Carpenter (1825 - 1880) and Rosannia Dellinger (1833 - 1901).  Their marriage produced nine children.

After John Hart and Mary Elizabeth were married, they relocated to Cherryville Township, Gaston County, North Carolina.  The 1880 Gaston County Census shows John (age 30) and Elizabeth (age 28) with three children: William (age 6), Miles (age 4) and Charles (age 1).  John Hart was working as a "Farmer".

The 1900 Census shows John Hart Witherspoon and his family living in the Cherryville Township of Gaston County, North Carolina.  His birth date is listed as "Jan 1949" but it was actually Jan 1950.  Others living on the family farm included his wife Mary Elizabeth (age 48), son Moses Leander (age 18), daughter Minnie Mae (age 16), son "Doris W." (Dorus Webb, age 13), son "Elisie E." (Emmett Elzie, age 11), son Jacob Vance (age 8), daughter Ocie Beuhah (age 6) and mother-in-law Rosannia Dellinger Carpenter (age 67; Widowed).  The Census shows that Mary had given birth to nine children and all nine were still living.  Older sons William Thomas, David Miles and Charles Alexander were not living with their parents.  John Hart's Farm was "O" (Owned, not Rented) and "F" (Free, not Mortgaged).
 
The Census reveals that mother-in-law Rosannia Dellinger Carpenter (widow of William A.J. Carpenter) had given birth to six children but only two were still living in 1900.
 
David Miles Witherspoon (2nd born son of John Hart and Mary) and his wife Elenora "Nora" Jeleta  Sipe Witherspoon were living nearby with no children at the time.

House No. 314 is the home of David Miles Witherspoon (age 33) and his wife Elenora "Nora" Jeleta  Sipe (age 31).  They live on Kings Mountain Road in Cherryville.  David and Nora have been married for 11 years and have one son, Junius Roy (age 7).  They own their farm, without a mortgage.
 
House No. 320 is the home of William Thomas Witherspoon (age 35) and his wife Catherine Georgiana Rudisill (age 36).  William and Catherine have been married for 14 year and have five children: Dewey Lee (age 11), John Pinkney (age 8), Virgil Clyde (age 5), Benjamin G. (age 3) and David H. (age 1 year and 2 months).  The Census whows that Catherine had given birth to six children but only five were still living.  An additional son, Nevit Witherspoon, would be born about 1913.  William is working at the "Saw Mill" and rents the farm where his family lives on Lincolnton Road.
 
House No. 324 is the home of Dorus Webb Witherspoon (age 23) and his wife Amanda Blanche Mauney (age 19).  Dorus and Amanda have been married for less than a year and have one child, a son named Tew Carlo (age 1 month), not "Carlo L." as the Census says.  Dorus was renting the home that his family lived in on Morganton Road and his occupation was "Labor" and "Odd Jobs".
 
House No. 326 is the home of John Hart Witherspoon (age 60) and his wife Mary Elizabeth Carpenter (age 54) - the parents.  John Hart and Mary have been married for 36 years.  Mary had given birth to nine children and all nine were still living - but only two still at home, Emmett Elzie (age 19) and Jacob Vance (age 18).  John Hart owned his farm - mortgage free - which was located on Morganton Road and his occupation was "Farmer".  Emmett and Jacob worked on the family farm.

Lee and Minnie have been married for eight years and have four children: Vida M. (actually Ida Mae, age 7), Bessie L. (age 5), Ava E. (age 2) and Virgie E. (age 4 months).  Lee is working as a "Laborer" at the "Saw Mill".  The Anthonys rent their home on Morganton Road and live between her parents and her brother Charles Alexander Witherspoon.
 
House No. 329 is the home of Charles "Charlie" Alexander Witherspoon (age 31) and his wife Lucy Ina Mauney (age 31).  Charlie and Lucy have been married for 11 years and have three children: Irvin Wray (age 9), Forrest Guy (age 5) and Charles "Charlie" Basil (age 2).  Daughter Lurien May Witherspoon was born 26 Aug 1903 and died 28 Jun 1904).  Charlie owned his farm which was located on Morganton Road and his occupation was listed as "Farmer".
 
House No. 176 is the home of Alfred and Susan Blackwelder.  Alfred and Susan's son John William Blackwelder (age 19) married Osie Beulah Witherspoon (age 15), the youngest daughter of John Hart Witherspoon.  John and Ocie are living with his parents on Pink Street in Cherryville, Gaston County, North Carolina and John was working as a "Laborer" at the "Cotton Mille".

Mary Elizabeth Carpenter Witherspoon died 24 Dec 1917 in Cherryville, Gaston County, NC.  The Cause of Death was Pulmonary Tuberculosis.  She was 65 years old.  He son Moses was the informant.  The Death Certificate lists her date of birth as 14 May 1852 in Cleveland County, NC.  Her parents William Carpenter and Rosannia Dellinger are also listed.

The 1920 Census shows John Hart Witherspoon living in Cherryville, Gaston County, North Carolina, all by himself.  He is 70 years old and a widower.
 
His son, Dorus Witherspoon, is living nearby.  Dorus is 33 years old and working as a "Laborer" for the "Railroad".  Those in Dorus' family are: his wife Blanche (age 29), son Tew (age 10), daughters Lois (age 8) and Lillie (age 7), as well as sons Loyd (age 5), Jay P. (age 4) and Waburn F. (age 1 and two months).
