It's interesting to see what the Scriptures in the Bible have to say about "Long Life" and "How to Attain It".

The days of our years are threescore years and ten (3 x 20 = 60 + 10 = 70); and if by reason of strength they become fourscore years (4 x 20 = 80)GOD says in Psalms 91 that those who dwell in His secret place (or in His presence) will be satisfied with 'long life". He further states in Psalms 90 that those who walk in a "right relationship" with Him will live to be 70 years old - and some even to 80 years old. I thought it would be interesting to pull together the information for those who lived to be 80 years old or older.

The oldest "Matriarch" in the Catawba County Loftin Lineage is Frances Elizabeth Fisher. She married James Franklin Loftin in 1847 and he was killed seventeen years later in 1864, during the Civil War. Frances, or Franky, was born 08 Aug 1826 to Reuben & Mary Fisher and lived to the age of 91, almost 92. She died on 24 Jun 1918. Only two of James Franklin & Franky's children lived to the age of 80 or above. William Alexander Loftin lived to the age of 87 while his sister Mary Frances Loftin (Mrs. Jacob Francis Drum) lived to the age of 80. Three daughters of Mary Frances Loftin Drum also lived beyond the age of 80. Etta May Drum lived to the age of 89, Lula Elizabeth Drum lived to the age of 92 and Antha Pearl Drum lives to the age of 81. Only one of William Alexander Loftin's seven children lived to the age of 80. His daughter, Cordie Bland Loftin Wilson (Mrs. Thomas Wilson) lived to the age of 87. William Alexander "Alec" Loftin is the oldest "Patriarch" in the Catawba County Loftin Lineage. Alec was the son of James Franklin Loftin and Frances Elizabeth Fisher. He lived to the age of 87. From all available evidence, it seems that the original Methodist Church in Catawba was called Smyrna. As a young man Alec was a member of the Smyrna Society in 1868 and 1869 and continued there at least through 1877. Class papers for Smyrna (1872 & 1873) indicate that Alec was "single" and a "Believer". In 1875, Alec married Laura Rossie Cranford, the daughter of Rev. Manley Wilson Cranford and Mary Martha Lomax . In 1887 Alec, along with his brother-in-laws, Gilbert McKinnis and Preacher Francis “Fitze” Drum, decided a church was needed in the Catawba County community where they lived, so they called for a meeting at Walden School House. Many of the people in the community were part of the congregation at Shiloh, a Methodist Episcopal Church, and there was friction dating from the War Between the States (Civil War). Response to the meeting was encouraging and a brush arbor was constructed near the site where Center Methodist Church now stands. Later as the church grew, people donated wood and their time to build a church. The construction of Center Methodist Church took place in June of 1890. William Alexander was elected one of the leaders of the church. Francis Drum was asked to be the song leader, but declined, saying he preferred that Alec do it. Alec loved to sing and usually sang as he walked to church with his children. Alec loved Campmeeting and attended the Balls Creek Campground just like his father before him. It was, and still is, a typical Methodist campground with an open-air wooden arbor in the center of the property. Alec greeted his kin in the tent his father had raised in the 1850s. Our oldest Loftin relative to date was Lois Loftin Mundy, age 106, who passed away on 04 Jun 2015. Lois was the daughter of Arthur Lee Loftin & Josephine Gilleland and the granddaughter of William Alexander Loftin & Laura Rossie Cranford. Lois loved church and recounted to Curtis Loftin how she had been saved as a child of 12-years-old. She said that a preacher had preached about the Second Coming of Christ and she had a hard time sleeping at night after that - eventually giving her heart to the Lord. She always had a desire to be a missionary but felt she couldn't since she had never gone to college - only completing high school. She eventually did become a "Lay Person" in the Methodist church and was allowed to preach at several Methodist churches in Catawba and surrounding counties. One of her sermons was entitled, "Are the Days of Revival Over?". Lois played the piano at both Center and Shiloh Methodist Churches for many years. Lois said that when she was a little girl, her family attended Center Methodist Church in Catawba County, NC. The church had two doors on the two sides of the church - one for the men and one for the women. She also said that when people entered the church that the men would sit together on the left side of the church while the women would sit on the right side. I once asked her what she attributed to such a long life and she said, she didn't ever smoke, drink, or "run around". Lois continued to live in her own home, all alone after the death of her husband, until the age of 102. At that time she removed to Abernathy Memorial where she died on 04 Jul 2015 at the age of 106. In addition to Lois, her three sisters all lived beyond the age of 80. Marie lived to the age of 104 but passed away on 01 Jul 2015, Bernice lived to the age of 96 and was just one month shy of being 97 before her death, and youngest sister Helen lived to the age of 88 before passing away in 2014 after a fall. That's really amazing that all four sisters were blessed with such long life. PROVERBS 10:27

The information that I've collected on the Goble Family over the years, goes back to William Goble (1540 - 01 May 1593) in Albingbourne, England. Of the 13 ancestors I've identified who lived to the age of 80 or above, nine of them are male and only four are female. Martin Luther Goble (son of Jacob Hedrick Goble & Frances Elizabeth Douglas) is the oldest Goble Family member that I have found thus far. Martin lived to be almost 92 years old. In addition to Martin making the 80+ Year Old List, so did five of his children - accounting for six of the thirteen individuals on the list. His daughter Willie lived to be 88+, son J.C. lived to the age of 88, daughter Helen lived to the age of 86, daughter Elgevia lived to the age of 85+, and son James/Leggs lived to the age of 83. Of all the Gobles information I've checked, Willie Alleen Goble Loftin lived to be the oldest female, at the age of 89+. Willie was the daughter of Martin Luther Goble and Beulah Vernesta Johnson and the wife of Sam William Loftin.

The Patriarch of the Setzer Family, Johannes Adam Setzer, was born about 1710 and died about 1808, and was one of the oldest living Setzers, at the age of about 98. Jacob Lanier Setzer
Jacob Lanier Setzer, the son of John Setzer I and Catherine Bushart Barringer, was born 04 Oct 1804 and died 10 Dec 1891 - living to the age of 87. In addition to Jacob, his brother David lived to the age of 84 and his brother Paul lived to the age of 99 (the oldest Setzer thus far). Three of Jacob's children lived to be older than 80. They were William Able Setzer age 89, Ann Catherine Setzer age 80, and Patrick Sylvanus Setzer age 79 11/12. William Able Setzer had two children who lived beyond age 80 - George Pinkney Setzer age 92 and William Lester Setzer age 80.
