At an early age, he (Thomas Aderholt
Witherspoon) became a blacksmith
apprentice at the shop of Miles Wike, near Balls Creek (in
Catawba County, North Carolina).
From a yearly compensation of room, board and fifty dollars, he
was able to save money, and in 1874, opened his own blacksmith
shop in Hickory, a trade he followed for more than 60 years.
For the greater part of that time his shop was located in a
small building on Fourteenth Street, adjacent to the old
Abernethy Stables. |

Thomas Aderholt Witherspoon married Florancis Arkansas "Cancy"
Miller on 28 Dec 1876. in the Highland section of Catawba
County, NC. Florancis (frequently listed as Florence) was born 07 Dec 1856 and was the
daughter of Joel Miller (1821 - 1902) and Harriett Elizabeth Bolch (1825 - 1887). |

At a frame home he (Thomas Aderholt
Witherspoon) built at 613 Main
Avenue, N E in Hickory (North Carolina), he and his wife
(Florence Arkansas Miller) raised a family of eight
children. The house was razed in 1972 to make way for a
new Masonic Lodge building. It was located about 200 fee
southwest of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, adjacent to the
Lenoir Rhyne College campus. The house was constructed of
heart pine. |

NC. Thomas and Arkansas had two
children: Robert Leroy (age 2) and Sarah Elizabeth (age 4
months0. Thomas was working as a blacksmith and his
younger brother, David Hoyle Witherspoon (age 25), was working as a carriage
maker. A "Boarder" by the name of Wesley M. Hawn (age 21)
was also living with Thomas' family and working as a "Blacksmith Ap(prentice)". |
