At an early age, he became a blacksmith
apprentice at the shop of Miles Wike, near Balls Creek.
From a yearly compensation of room, board and fifty dollars, he
was able to save money, and in 1874, opened his own blacksmith
shop in Hickory, a trade he followed for more than 60 years.
For the greater part of that time his shop was located in a
small building on Fourteenth Street, adjacent to the old
Abernethy Stables. |

On 28 Dec 1876, he married Florances
Arkansas "Cancy" Miller of the Highland section of Catawba
County. |

At a frame home he built at 613 Main
Avenue, N E in Hickory, he and his wife raised a family of eight
children. The house was razed in 1972 to make way for a
new Masonic Lodge building. It was located about 200 fee
southwest of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, adjacent to the
Lenoir Rhyne College campus. The house was constructed of
heart pine. |
