said, "We had family
get-togethers every year for Mama's birthday. Ted always
liked my potato salad because I put cucumbers in it."
This birthday party for Ida Setzer Loftin eventually became the
annual
Loftin Family Reunion. |

Ted attended St. Stephens High School in Hickory, Catawba

Ted's high school activities included Corona Yearbook Staff -
Advertising Manager (Senior Year), Commercial Club (Junior and
Senior Year), 4-H Club (Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Year),
Monogram Club (Sophomore, Junior and Senior Year) and Athletic
Assistant (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior Year). Ted was
also in the Glee Club and played Boys' Basketball. |

Military Service |
|
Ted enlisted in the US Military on 23 Mar 1954. He served
as a PFC (Private First Class) in the US Army from 1964 to 1956
where he served with Battery A 775 Field Artillery Battalion. |

|
Ted was
killed in an automobile accident while home on leave from the
military on 14 Mar 1956. Ted was 20-years-old at the time. |

Ted's Death Certificate shows that Ted and wife Elizabeth were
living at 1312 16th Str, NE, Hickory, NC, at the time of his
death. It also shows that Ted had been in the US Army from
1954-1956. The Death Certificate says that Ted was in a car
accident where he had been riding as a passenger. The car
had overturned in the road. Cause of death was listed as
"probable fractured skull". |

Ted's wife, Elizabeth Friar Herman, applied for a military
headstone for her husband on 19 Mar 1956. The application
shows that Ted had received the "Good Conduct Medal". |

After Ted's death, Elizabeth married Howard Newton Cline, Jr.
She died 13 Aug 2005 and was buried in the Mt. View Cemetery in
Ridgeway, Henry County, VA. |
