The 1860 Census shows Daniel and Susanah (listed on the Census
as "Susan") living in the Newton Township of Catawba County, NC.
Daniel was 36 and Susan was 31. They had five children:
Robert K (age 11), James N. (age 9), Marcus C. (age 6), Rhoda M.
(age 30) and Mary M. (age 1). All the family was born in
North Carolina and Daniel was still working as a farmer.
His real estate (property and buildings) was valued at $1500 and
his personal estate (animals, farm equipment, furniture, crops)
was valued at $1000. |
|
This same 1860 Census shows Daniel Jr. living
next door to David and Delilah Wike. This is pertinent because
Daniel's wife, Susanah, would die before the decade was over, on
15 Oct 1869, at the age of 41. After Susanah's death, Daniel Jr.
married Martha Adaline Wike, the daughter of David and
Delilah Wike, on 24 Nov 1870. Martha Adeline Wike Setzer was
born 11 Sep 1841. |

American Civil War |
|
The American Civil War began on 12 Apr 1861 when Confederate
forces fired upon Fort Sumpter, South Carolina. Many of Daniel's
relatives served in the Civil War for the Confederate states.
Daniel Setzer Jr. enlisted on 16 Mar 1862 in Catawba County, NC,
at the age of 40 and became part of Company K, 46th NC Infantry
Regiment. |
|
Daniel's son, Robert Carr Setzer, entered the Civil War at the
age of 17 in the fall of 1864. Robert, like his father, served
in Company K, 46th NC Infantry Regiment. Fortunately, both
father and son survived the war. |

R.C. SETZER, p. 281 |
 |
I entered the
service at the age of seventeen years in Company K, 46th
N.C. Regiment in the fall of 1864. I found the Company
at or near Petersburg, VA. I was in several engagements,
and on the 25th of March (the same day Lee made his raid
at Petersburg) was captured on the picket line with Mark
Boyd, Mark and Lank Poovey, all being in a rifle pit. We
were taken to City Point; from there to Washington City;
then to Point Look (a Union POW Prison for Confederate
soldiers). We remained there until the surrender and
fared reasonably well. On the 14th of May we were sent
to our homes, making our way as best we could. We
found destitution here. No shoes or clothing; rations
were scarce, but we were grateful that we were at home.
I took hold of the dilemma, and during the summer made
enough of provisions for the next year; all I lacked was
money. Time passed; and finally I married and continued
to acquire little by little, and today I am at ease,
surrounded with plenty - a jolly, active citizen. |

Robert Carr/Kerr Setzer was buried in
the Oakwood Cemetery, Victoria, Lunenburg County, VA |

When the 1870 Census for Catawba County, NC, was taken on 24 Jun
1870, Daniel Setzer Jr. still had not re-married. He married
Martha Adeline Wike later that year on 24 Nov 1870. |
|
The 1870 Census shows Daniel still living in the Newton Township
of Catawba County, NC. His age was 47 and he was still
working as a farmer. His real estate was still valued at
$1500 but the value of his personal estate had reduced to $600.
All of his children, except Robert Carr Setzer, were still
living on the family farm. Daniel had employed a
housekeeper by the name of Malinda Deal to take care of
household chores. |

The 1900 Census shows Daniel and Martha Adaline still living in
the Newton Township of Catawba County, NC. His age is 77
and Adaline's age is 59. This Census also shows that
Martha Adaline had given birth to four children but only two of
them were still living: Ida (age 19) and Edward (age 19). The
census shows that both Ida and Edward were born in Feb 1881 -
indicating that they were twins. Ida and Edward were
working in the local cotton mill as "spoolers". This Census
shows that Daniel was renting his home and states that it was
not a farm - although Daniel's occupation is listed as a farmer. |
|
Daniel's son by his first marriage, John Franklin, was 25 and
still living with his father. He is listed as "Disabled". |
|
Jacob and Nancy Setzer were living near
Daniel and Adaline. |
