Alonzo Kelly Loftin     Born: 30 Jun 1857, Lincoln County, NC Died: Before 1917 (According to Grady Loftin's 1917 WWI Draft Registration)     Alonzo Kelly Loftin was born 30 Jun 1857.  A.K., as he was called by his family and friends, was one of at least eight children born to Langdon A. S. Newell and Miss Lucy Ray, of Charlotte, were here Wednesday taking depositions in the case of A.K. Loftin, of Guilford County, vs. David J. Craig, of Statesville.  A.K. Loftin brought suit in Guilford Superior Court against David J. Craig for alleged usury.  Mr. Geo. B. Nicholson, of Statesville, was appointed commissioner to examine Defendant Craig.      The plaintiff was represented by Mr. Jake F. Newell and Judges Furchess and Coble; Messrs. Armfield & Turner represented the defendant.  Mr. Nicholson held that the defendant was not compelled to disclose anything that would subject him to a penalty or forfeiture.  Plaintiff excepted to the ruling and the matter was referred back to the court.       According to the 1900 North Carolina Census, Alonzo and Octa were living in the Gastonia Township of Gaston County.  Alonzo's age is listed as 42 and Octa was 32.  The month of year of each person's birth is listed on the census.  Alonzo's occupation is listed as "Deputy C???".  Alonzo's brother, Vardrey Forney Loftin age 50 (actually 48), is living with the family and working as a carpenter   1900  Gastonia Township, Gaston County, North Carolina Census   Last Name First Name Relation Race Sex Birth Month Birth Year Age Married Birth Trade Read Write Loftin A.K.
