Philip Daniel Loftin

Page 1: The Early Years

Born: 1978, Catawba County, NC

(Left) Philip at about 3 months old

Philip Daniel Loftin was the second child born to Curtis Dean Loftin and Carolyn Janet Weeks.  Philip was born in 1978 at Catawba Memorial Hospital in Hickory, North Carolina (Catawba County).

Curtis and Carolyn wanted to give their new-born son a Biblical name and they chose Philip Daniel.

When the original birth certificate came, his name was spelled "Phillip" - and since that was not the Biblical spelling, it was not what we wanted.  We made the correction and a new birth certificate was issued.

Philip's sister, Beth, had been born by Caesarean-Section in 1976.  In the 1970s, if one child was born by Caesarean section, all the children after that would automatically be delivered by C-Section.  Therefore, Philip was also delivered by C-Section.

Carolyn was in the hospital with baby Philip about 7 days before they finally came home.  During that time, Curtis was teaching school during the day, taking care of  1.5-year-old Beth in the evening, trying to find time to wash, cook, clean house and even visit Carolyn and Philip at the hospital during the evening.

Philip had one sister, Elizabeth Ann Loftin, who the family called Beth.

The Loftin family attended Victory Cathedral in Conover during this time and Philip's baby dedication took place there.  Rev. Bob Hillard was their Pastor.  Philip was born in April 1978 and Curtis started growing the beard that he would wear for the rest of his life in May 1978.

(Below) Philip takes a little nap with Dad

Philip was a sweet baby with a very gentle nature.  When it was bed time we'd say, "Go get in bed, Philip".  He'd say "O-tay" and go get in bed all by himself with never a complaint.

Carolyn chose to stay at home with Philip and Beth for several years when they were small.  She supplemented the family income by keeping other children, too.

Eventually Carolyn went back to work.  Philip and Beth stayed with a family friend, Barbara/Babbie Smith.

When Philip was 4, he was enrolled in Claremont Day Care.

In the fall of 1985, Philip and Beth left Balls Creek Elementary School and started attending Tree of Life Christian Academy in Hickory.  Carolyn was their teacher.  Students of multi-ages and grades worked on their "Paces" in the same classroom.  Students were allowed to work at their own pace and had to test out of each booklet before they could move on to the next one.

Philip spent five years in private church school at (1) Tree of Life Christian Academy, (2) Newton Conover Christian Academy and (3) New Horizon Christian Academy.  His mother was his teacher all of those years.  When his parents, Curtis & Carolyn, decided to change churches, there was a need for Carolyn to also look for another job.  They decided to let Philip and Beth return to public school.  Philip had actually gained a year in his studies and had finished the 7th grade because of his ability to work ahead at his own pace in the Accelerated Christian Education Program.  Since he was only 12, however, his parents decided to let him repeat 7th grade so he would be with other students his same age.  The decision was made to let Philip attend Catawba Middle School for 7th & 8th Grades - the same school where Philip's Dad taught.

Philip was very active during his years at Catawba Middle School.  In addition to playing in the band during 7th and 8th Grades, he was also in one of the first Algebra I classes in the school.  He was a member of the yearbook staff and was even voted the 8th Grade Superlative "Hardest Worker" by the students.  He won the Math Logo contest and was also the Science Fair Winner.
