FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

I've been hoping for sometime to connect with the family of Frances Loftin Drum (b. 1878).  Frances was the daughter of William Alexander Loftin and Laurie Rossie Cranford and the sister of Alonzo Lester Loftin and Arthur Lee Loftin (as well as Zettie Wilson Loftin Beatty, Hattie Pearl Loftin, W. Garland Loftin and Cordie Bland Loftin Wilson).  Frances had three children from her marriage to John Wesley Drum but only one, Garvin Loftin Drum, survived infancy.  Garvin died in 2003 - two years before I started working on family genealogy.  Garvin's marriage to Dorothy Dean Elam produced one child, a daughter by the name of Galade Ruth Drum Jordan (or Dee Dee).  Dee Dee was recently researching her family on the internet and found our Family Genealogy website and wrote me a really nice email.  Several things happened as a result of the email.  (1) I had previously believed that Frances' given name was Mary Frances, but Dee Dee said her father always told her that his mother's name was Frances Ivey.  I also noted that the 1920 Census had her listed as "Frances I. Drum".  (2) Dee Dee and I met on Tuesday, 17 Sep 2011, at Panera Bread in Mooresville to exchange information.  She'll be getting copies of photos of Frances and John Wesley Drum as soon as possible.

The Cemeteries page has been updated with numerous links.

A new webpage was created for the McCorkle Family Cemetery in Terrell, NC.  This cemetery is the burial place of Major Francis Marion McCorkle, Sr. (b. 1742) and his family - including Isabella McCorkle, b. 1771, (wife of William Able Beatty and grandmother of James Franklin Loftin).  Others buried in this cemetery include Alexander Work McCorkle (brother of Isabella McCorkle).

I've started a new series of pages on members of the family entitled "Stories of Faith".  The first page created is for Willie Goble Loftin and can be found at Stories of Faith: Willie Goble Loftin.  The page tells about Willie's personal realtionship with God - and her memories of her husband Sam Loftin, her sisters, and her parents Martin Luther Goble & Beulah Vernesta Johnson.

Church pages created this month include Sherrills Ford Presbyterian, Sherrills Ford, NC.  Wanetta Beatty (Mrs. William Alexander Loftin) and Charles M. Beatty and his wife Zettie Wilson Loftin Beatty are buried there.

The Notable Ancestors page has been updated with some information about the Lofting family - including Harry Darce who married Louisa Jane Loftin.  Harry wrote the well-known song "Bicycle Built For Two" in 1892.  There is also information on Morgan Lofting, an American actress best know as the voice of "The Baroness" on the G. I. Joe Animated Cartoon TV Series.

FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

John Davison, grandson of Frederick Thompson Loftin (b.1889), sent me two great photos of Fred that have been added to his webpage.  Thanks John.

Cemetery headstone & footstones were added to the page of William Ray Loftin (1914).  Ray's daughter, Pam, sent me information on her family to update the Loftin Family Genealogy page.

A "Tribute" page was created for Flora Edwards Stewart (Mrs. Harry Stewart).  There is absolutely no direct family relationship between Mrs. Steward or any branch of my family, but she was the third cousin of Dewey Lanier (2nd husband to Willie Thelma Loftin, b. 1911).  Flora was the woman who kept me as a small boy - who influenced me greatly - and was my second mother.  She never had children of her own and I wanted her to be remembered.

A page was created for Catawba Middle School which educated 7th & 8th grade students from Sherrills Ford Elementary, Claremont Elementary and Oxford Elementary from 1976 - 1999.  Website host, Curtis Loftin, taught 8th grade math there for the 23 years that Catawba was a middle school until new middle schools were built in 1999 across from Bunker Hill High School and Bandys High School.  At that time, students and faculty split and went to the new facilities.

The webpages that were started in July for Bethlehem Methodist Church in Claremont, NC - Center Methodist Church in Catawba, NC - and Mathis Chapel Baptist Church in Catawba, NC, were completed and include histories of the church (that I've found thus far), photos of the church building and members, as well as cemetery headstone photos of various members of the family.  A new webpage was created for Shiloh Methodist Church in Catawba/Claremont, NC, Catawba Methodist Church in Catawba, NC and St. John's Lutheran Church in Conover, NC.  I also finally got around to doing an update to the Cemeteries Page - where you can find family listings as well as church & cemetery addresses.

While in the process of working on the Shiloh Methodist Church webpage, I came across some really interesting information on the Lanier family of Catawba County.  As I looked closer, I realize that it did indeed connect with Dewey Lanier - second husband of Willie Thelma Loftin (b. 1911).  Pages were created for Edmund Lanier (grandfather of Dewey Lanier) as well as David Anderson Lanier (father of Dewey Lanier).  David Anderson Lanier was a former pastor of Shiloh.  Pages have also been created for the sons of Edmund Lanier (4 of which lost their lives during the Civil War) - including Elkana M. Lanier (b. 1837), Jacob E. Lanier (b. 1843), Joseph S. Lanier (b. 1835), William Benjamin Lanier (b. 1838) and Burton Newton Lanier (b. 1847).

FAMILY: Setzer
(Aderholdt, Barringer, Bovey, Bushart, Deal, Heavner, Herman, Ikert, Miller, Motz, Rankin,

Major components were added to the Leander Densford Lutz Witherspoon (b. 1861) webpage - including census records and photos of cemetery headstones.  Densford was the son of Miles Rankin Witherspoon and Sarah Elizabeth Aderholdt.  Major components were also added to the webpage of their son Jacob Napoleon Witherspoon (b. 1856) and David Hoyle Witherspoon (b. 1854).

FAMILY: Johnson
(Corzine, Fink, Hamilton, Kaiser, Leslie, Lewis, Moore, Sherrill, Upright, Wilkinson)

Thanks to Colby Hamilton, I've added additional information to the Hamilton Family Descendancy.

A new web page was created for John Lewis (1720 - 1802) and Stephen Lewis (1757 - 1792) including their wills.

The story and folk song of how John Lewis (b. 1783) murdered Omie Wise has been added to the Murder, Mayhem & Mystery in the Family page.

I've had several email exchanges with Mike Davison (Cedar Park, Texas) and John Davison (Indiana), and as a result have added new pages for Jacob Philo Loftin (b. 1854) and his son, Frederick Thompson Loftin (b. 1889) - who descend from John & Martha Loftin to Eldridge Loftin to Langdon Loftin.  They've share photos and additional information for their grandfather, Frederick Thompson Loftin.

I discovered a death certificate for an Infant Son born to Alonzo Lester Loftin and Ida Lillian Setzer in 1922 - between the births of Oscar Sherrill Loftin and Glennie Frances Loftin.  This is either another child or the 1928 Infant Song headstone at Center Methodist Church is incorrectly dated.

After a phone call with Peggy Loftin Brotherton, I pulled together memories of what we remembered about Alonzo Lester Loftin and Ida Lillian Setzer's home looked like.  I only have memories from when I was a very small boy, but Peggy's recollection was much more extensive.  A layout of the house plan has been added to Ida's page as well as descriptions of the rooms.

FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

Very little is known about our Great-Great-Grandfather James Franklin Loftin who died during the War Between the States (the Civil War) at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff on May 16, 1864 at the age of 36/37.  Not even a photo has survived (that we've found).  One of the great finds was an account written by W.A. Day who was also at the battle.  I was recently contacted by W.A. Day's great-great-nephew Farrell Brown.  This is the email I received:

Good afternoon from South Carolina:
I am age 76 and a descendant of W. A. Day.  He was my grandfather's uncle on my father's side.  My father came from Sherrill's Ford area or East Mombo area, I forget which.  I am now reading the transcribed account of Company I of the 49th Regiment of the North Carolina Troops by my great, great uncle.  There I encountered the account of the Buffaloes of Eastern NC and a Google search ultimately brought me to your e-mail address.  As a young boy, I recall looking at the handwritten accounts that led to the printed document by Enterprise Job Office in Newton in 1993.  The original diary is in my sister's family.  Unfortunately, my sisters and I were unable to understand what it all meant.  I do know that "Uncle Billy Day",l as referred to by our grandparents, was a relatively educated person compared to my grandfather.  His acclaimed lack of enthusiasm for the Confederacy told to us stands out.  Like many in Catawba County, he was not of the gentry who owned slaves.
Just a message you might appreciate.  While at my sister's home in Rowan County last month, I was given the printed booklet.  My wife and I attempted to find on Sherrill's Ford Ford the claimed park having something to do with "Uncle Billy" but were not successful.
Best Regards,
Farrell Brown
Son of William Blenn Brown & Grandson of Marvin Osborne Brown

Michael Whitener Loftin (1916 - 1949) and Oscar Sherrill Loftin (1920 - 1986), sons of Alonzo Lester Loftin & Ida Lillian Setzer, were arrested in connection with the death of a man falling from the Catawba County Bridge in 1949 but were found not guilty.  The were again arrested in 1949 for assaulting/slapping two females at an Iredell County roadhouse.  To read the three articles from the Statesville Landmark, go to Mike's page.

Michael Whitener Loftin (1916 - 1949), the son of Alonzo Lester Loftin & Ida Lillian Setzer, died 24 Feb 1949.  I recently came across four newspaper articles from the Statesville Daily Record and the Statesville Landmark.  The newspaper articles gave additional information about Mike's death and were added to his pag.e

Additional information was added to the Roy Henry Loftin (1899 - 1972) page from the Statesville Landmark Newspaper - as well as his son, Larry Henry Loftin (1927).

During the month of June, I found lots of newspaper articles from the Statesville Landmark and the Statesville Daily Record.  Many of them pertained to the family of Thomas Smith Loftin (1863 - 47) and his wife, Mary Jane Hartline - as well as their children, Thomas Percy Loftin (1889), Grover Excell Loftin (1892), David Moose Loftin (1896), Stokes Mills Loftin (1894), Foy Tate Loftin (1898), Mary Emma Loftin (1900), John Havener Loftin (1902), Harry Guy Loftin (1904) and Robert Fred "Jack" Loftin (1907).  To see the newspaper articles pertaining to each member of the family, you'll have to check out their respective pages.

An obituary notice for Mrs. Victoria Day Loftin, wife of James Loftin (1849), was found in the Statesville Landmark Newspaper, and placed on his page.  James's obituary notice was also found.

There were numerous articles in The Statesville Landmark Newspaper for James Brooks Loftin (1879) - including - the marriage notice and the obituary of his first wife, Florence Elizabeth Millstead - the death notice and obituary of his 2nd wife, Luxetta Beatty - and James Brooks Loftin's 3rd marriage to Mary Robinson.  The information from these newspaper articles was found and placed on his page.

Condolences to the family of James Henry "Jimmy" Huffman, son of John Henry "Jick" Huffman and Callie Elma Loftin, age 76, of Claremont, died Monday, 07 Mar 2011, at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley.  Jimmy was born 24 Jul 1934.  He is survived by his wife, Faye Elizabeth Huffman, and children Linda Darlene, James Henry Jr., Gary Wayne, Janice Faye, Bonnie Joyce and Jerry Ray.

Judy Dudley contacted me via email with information on Elizabeth "Betsy" Salina Loftin.  Betsy was the sister of James Franklin Loftin and daughter of Thomas Loftin and I had almost no information about her.  Betsy was married to Albert B Cook on 16 Jul 1847 in Catawba County, NC.  They had at least 7 children that are now listed on the Loftin Family Descendancy.  Betsy's husband, Albert, married twice more after her death to (1) Mary Anne Stiles and (2) Margaret Allen Little.  You can contact Judy at jdudley1@triad.rr.com .  Thanks Judy.

Bill Fuller [billrfuller@att.net] contacted me concerning Richard K. Loftin, an elderly "female" friend of his.  Richard was born 27 Mar 1907 in Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee, and "she" turned 104 this month.  Her grandmother, who wanted a boy, named her - and the name stuck.  Richard's father was Westly Walker Loftin and her paternal grandfather was John Westly Loftin.  Richard lives in McKendree Village, a Methodist center for older people, located to Andrew Jackson's property in Hermitage, near Nashville, TN.  Bill says that Richard is remarkable, that she still walks (with the assistance of a walker), lives by herself, does her washing on Tuesdays, attends Chapel services twice a week, makes the long walk to the dining room and heads up the Bible Class.  She may be the oldest living Loftin.  Richard was never married.

The 3rd annual Setzer Family Reunion for the descendants of Patrick Sylvanus Setzer and Margaret Ann Witherspoon is scheduled for 06 Mar 2011.  I received a nice letter from Beckie Whitener Huffman with an invite for the family - with an emphasis on my lineage from Patrick & Margaret's daughter Ida Lillian Setzer Loftin.  Patrick & Margaret's children were Jacob Eli Setzer, Miles Ernest Setzer, John Marion Setzer, Sallie Ann Setzer, Ida Lillian Setzer, Lizzie Pearl Setzer and Daisy McNeill Setzer - also Jones Garland Setzer (who died at the age of 12) and Ivy Lee Setzer (Ida's twin - who died at the age of 9 months).  The reunion will be at East Maiden Baptist Church, 1400 East Maiden Rd. on Saturday, March 26, 2011, from 12:30 until 4:00 pm.  Lunch will be at 1:30.  Paper products and eating utensils will be provided.  Thanks Beckie for letting us know.

Congratulations to the family of Saundra Sigmon Smith on the birth of a grandson Colton Levi Smith born in Feb 2011 to Billy Smith & Renee Freeze Smith.  Colton's descendancy:  Patrick Sylvanus Setzer > Lizzie Pearl Setzer (Sigmon) > Carlos Emanuel Sigmon > Saundra Juanita Sigmon (Smith) > William "Billy" Emanuel Smith > Colton Levi Smith.  Thanks Saundra for the family update.

Don Godfrey of Salisbury, NC, shared an old photo with me from an "EARLY" Barringer Family Reunion.  I've added it to the Barringer Family Descendancy page.  Thanks Don.

I received a nice email from Kathryn Saunders concerning the Murder in the Family page.  She descends from Christopher Goble/Goeble and had some additional interesting facts about the sudden death of Christopher.

Information about the Ambrose Sherrill (1780 - 1813) & Hulda Wilson (1742 - 1834) lineage was provided by Steven Sherrill and was added to the Sherrill Family Descendancy page.  Steve & his wife Kim & daughter Stephanie currently live in Hawaii.  His Dad (Buddy) & Mom (Kathleen) live in TUlsa OK.

The male lineage goes from Steven Sherrill (1780 - 1813) -> Reley S. Sherrill (1823 - 1893) -> Ephraim C. Sherrill (1846 - 1870) -> Thomas Jefferson Sherrill (1866 - 1821) -> Clarence Ted Sherrill (1898 - ????) -> Buddy L. T. Sherrill (1936 - Present) -> Steven O. Sherrill (1966 - Present) -. Stephanie M. Sherrill (2000 to Present).

Thomas Jefferson Sherrill was a night watchman at the St. John's Hospital in Tulsa, OK.  On the night of 21 Aug 1921, between 11:20pm and 12:20am, he was murdered by Arthur "Doc" Barker, the son of "Ma" Barker, AKA the Ma Barker Gang.  Thomas Jefferson Sherrill was Steven's grandfather.  Thanks Steven.
