Life was fragile for our ancestors.  Child bearing and disease took its toll on many of them.  Jacob and Minnie's second child, Fred Ernest Setzer, was born 27 Jul 1898.  Less than two weeks later, Minnie died on 09 Aug 1898 - more than likely as a result of difficulties in the childbirth process.

The 1900 Catawba County Census shows Jacob living on the farm of his father-in-law, Fulton Connor, along with his two small children, Pearl and Fred.  They were living in Cline's Township, which was part of the Claremont Precinct.  Those also living on the farm with C. Fulton Connor and his wife Anna were there three daughters: Bessie A., Fannie E., and Jennie.  The census states that even though Fulton Connor was born in North Carolina, his father was born in Maryland.  Everyone in both families could read and write except for the small children.
