John Marion Setzer was the son of Patrick Sylvanus Setzer and Margaret Elizabeth Ann Witherspoon.  He was born 08 May 1879 in Catawba County, North Carolina.  John Marion was the fourth of Patrick & Margaret's nine children.

 
 
 
According to the 1880 Catawba County Census, Patrick and Margaret Setzer had started their own family and had four sons, Jacob Eli Setzer, Miles Ernest Setzer, Jones Garland Setzer and John Marion Setzer, living on the family farm in the Newton Township.  They lived on a large farm 2 miles south of Claremont.  John Marion's age was listed at "1".

The 1900 Catawba County Census shows Patrick & Margaret as living in Newton Township with seven children.  Jones Garland born 23 May 1877 had died 22 Jul 1889 and Ivy Lee Setzer (twin to Ida) born 25 Apr 1884 had died nine months later on 02 Feb 1885.  The Census shows Miles as being married, but his wife, Effie, is listed as a "boarder" instead of a "Daughter-in-Law".
 
John Marion's age on the census was listed as "21" and he was still single.  His occupation was listed as a "farm laborer" and he could read and write.

John Marion Setzer married Emma Leola Lowrance on 29 May 1907 in Catawba County, NC.  Leola was born 09 Oct 1886 in Catawba County and was the daughter of Henry Durant Lowrance and Sarah Josephine Bost.  John Marion's brother, Miles Ernest Setzer, had married Effie Mae Lowrance (sister of Emma Leola) in 1899.
 
 

The marriage license for John Marion Setzer shows that his parents were P. S. Setzer (Patrick Sylvanus Setzer) and M. E. Setzer (Margaret Elizabeth Witherspoon Setzer).  Her parents were listed as Henry Lowrance, living, and Sallie Lowrance, dead.  John was 28 and Leola was 20.  The license shows that they were married on 29 May 1907 at the home of her father, Henry Lowrance, by Rev. E. Myers at the Methodist Church in Catawba, Catawba County, NC.  Witnesses were Henry Lowrance (Leola's father), Daisy Setzer (John's sister) and Lizzie Loftin.

The 1910 Catawba County Census shows that John Marion and Leola were living in Clines Township near his sister Sallie Mae Setzer and her husband Edgar Little.  The census shows John Marion and Leola as having three children: Connie Lathan, Thad Durant, and an "unnamed" son who was later named Harry S. Setzer.  John Marion's age was 31 and Leola was 24.

John Marion and Leola had a total of six children.
 
Harry Setzer, second son of John & Leola, died in 1913 at the age of 2 years old.  They had two additional children that did not live through infancy.  Even daughter Leola Morene only live to the age of 22.

The 1920 Census shows John Marion and Leola still living in the Cline's Township of Catawba County, NC.  John's age is listed as 40 and Leola is 33. Only their first two children are still living.  John's nephew, Fred - son of Jacob Eli Setzer, was also living with the family and working on the family farm.

John Marion Setzer died 27 Apr 1946 in Catawba County, NC, from chronic myocarditis - or heart failure.  He was 66 years old at the time (almost 67).  He was buried in the Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery in Claremont, NC.

Emma Leola Lowrance Setzer died 26 Jan 1971 in Blowing Rock, Watauga County, NC, as a result of heart failure.  She outlived John by 25 years and lived to the age of 84 years old.

Leola was buried beside of John Marion in the cemetery of Bethlehem Methodist Church in Claremont, NC.
