Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham

|
George Washington served as the first
President of the United States from 1789 to 1797 and as the
commander of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary
War from 1775 to 1783. Because of his significant role in the
revolution and in the formation of the United States, he is
often revered by Americans as the "Father of Our Country". |
|
George was born 22 Feb 1732 in Westmoreland County,
Virginia. He was the first child of Captain Augustine
Washington and his second wife Mary Ball. |
|
George was of primarily English gentry descent,
especially from Sulgrave, England. His great-grandfather John
Washington emigrated to Virginia in 1656 and began
accumulating land and slaves, as did his son Lawrence and
his grandson, George's father Augustine Washington.
Augustine was a tobacco planter who also tried his hand in
iron-manufacturing ventures. |
|
George's father died of a sudden illness in April 1743
when George was eleven years old, and his half-brother
Lawrence became a surrogate father and role model. |
