2009 In Review

2 Loftin Family Descendancy   12 Royal Tree - French

9 Kaiser Family Descendancy   19 Slavery
10 The Civil War   20 Tree - Loftin Family

2009 was an awesome year as I continued collecting photos and data, attended family reunions (Loftin and Setzer), and made contacts with relatives that I had not met before.  I didn't make it to the Barringer Family Reunion in October, but hope to make it next year.

Copies of numerous marriage licenses and bonds were acquired from Raleigh and added to the various ancestor pages.

Thanks so much to each of you who contacted me and shared information with me for the website.  The extended family appreciates your willingness to share what you have.  Here's just a "few" (definitely not all) of the highlights of the year.  Additional information can be found below in the monthly reviews.

For years we could only trace the Loftin family lineage back as far as John Loftin and Martha Lanier. Both Peggy Loftin Brotherton and John Smith felt that John Loftin's father was Cornelius Loftin (  ) but we didn't have the data to support it.  Thanks to Ann Parker for sharing the Loftin lineage connection between John and Cornelius Loftin (b. 1714).  With the information I received from Ann, we now connect all the way back to Leonard Loftin (b. 1610 - 1616) who was the first Loftin in America.

Ann Parker also gave me the name of Martha Lanier's father, which allowed me to work on that lineage.  Martha Lanier's grandfather, Sampson Lanier, Sr. married Elizabeth Washington.  Elizabeth appears to be a 3rd cousin to George Washington, the 1st President of the United States.  Through this lineage, there is also a connection to the Kings & Queens of England, France, Scotland, Sweden and Germany.  They all married relatives, so it seems if you find a connection to one - you're suddenly descended from them all.

Renee Loftin Clemmer was kind enough to share a copy of Martha Lanier Loftin's Last Will & Testament with me.  This is a little humorous since she's a little annoyed with one of her son-in-laws.

As a result of making the Lanier family connections, a connection was discovered to the same ancestry as George Washington and a connection to the English & French Royal lines.

Thanks to Barry Brotherton, I've added photos of the Manley Wilson Cranford old home place that were taken in 1995.

Rick Kaiser contacted me with corrections for the Kaiser lineage.  Rick has one of the largest databases of Leuzigen, Switzerland, "Kaisers".  The Kaiser lineage connects to the Loftin family through their Sherrill family lineage.

Madeline Hallman Lynch contacted me and donated additional descendancy information for her branch of the Sherrill family.  Madeline lives in Utah and works on that line.

Sallie C. Loftin Henderson, from New Mexico, contacted me with additional Loftin descendancy.  She descends from Alonzo Kelly Loftin.  Additional information was added to the Loftin Descendancy page.  Pages were added for Grady Adams Loftin Sr. and Grady Adams Loftin Jr.  Mike Talbot of Metairie, LA, contacted me via email and shared some great photos of Grady Adams Loftin, Sr. and Grady Adams Loftin Jr.  James Loftin of Denver, NC, contacted me and shared information about Thomas Loftin's (b.1798) 2nd marriage to Margaret Fisher and their lineage.

Frank Butler, of Charleston, SC, contacted me with information about his branch of the Loftin family.  He descends from Elizabeth Loftin and James Edwards.  Elizabeth was a sister to Thomas Loftin and daughter of James Loftin and Susannah Sherrill.

This was also the year that Diane Wilson Elliott (granddaughter of Cordie Loftin Wilson) released her first novel, "Forever & Beyond".  If you've not picked up Diane's book, you really should get a copy.  I've not read it, but my mother (Willie Goble Loftin) has and says it's excellent.  Mom said she laughed & cried as she engrossed herself in the story.  She also lost some sleep - choosing to stay up late reading.

The Setzer family line seems to have been the line with the most growth during the 2009 year as a result of contacts via phone, email and personal visits - most of those being relatives who actually contacted me.  NC Representative Mitchell Setzer shared some great photos of Miles Ernest Setzer and his wife, Effie Lowrance Setzer.  Twenty five new web pages were created for various Setzer ancestors, including all the sons of Jacob Lanier Setzer & Delilah Deal, all the children of Patrick Sylvanus Setzer and Margaret Witherspoon Setzer, as well as pages for various ancestors from John Wilburn Setzer's lineage.

Mary Rink "Mimi" Harbinson (a Setzer cousin living in Richland, Washington) emailed me and shared lots of information and photos from her line - Henry Theodore Setzer (b. 1846), the youngest son of Jacob Lanier Setzer and Delilah Deal - including a photo of Henry, as well as his home.  Mary was also the one who pointed Mitchell Setzer in my direction.

I contacted Vickie Witherspoon Marlow who graduated Bunker Hill High School with me in 1971.  I hadn't seen Vickie in over 30 years but we had a nice time reminiscing and she graciously shared with me lots of information about the Witherspoon lineage.  As a result, numerous new Witherspoon pages were created.  Dr. Frank Witherspoon of Memphis, TN, also contacted me with additional information on the Witherspoon family.

Linda Aderholt Harral, from Cherryville, NC, contacted me and provided information about the Aderholdt/Aderholt family.  Jacob Adverholt & Elizabeth Heavner as well as his parents, Frederick William Aderholt and Maria Elizabeth Janetta Isheim, are buried at the Beaver Dam Church in Cherryville, NC (in Gaston County, NC, near Gastonia).  Unfortunately, the church is closed and the church & cemetery are fenced in.

Boyd and Beckie Goble, from Newton, NC, donated a photo of Evie Hefner Goble's headstone.  It can be seen on Lewis Carlan Goble's webpage.  They also shared photos of Rufus Dagenhart & Martha Ann Goble Dagenhart's headstones.

Linda Jones, from Taylorsville, NC, contacted me with additional information about her branch of the Goble descendancy from Martha Ann Goble Dagenhardt.    Linda shared photos of Martha Goble Dagenhardt and her daughter & son-in-law, Lovie Dagenhardt and Gus Carrigan.

Allen Miller contacted me with information on the Miller family.  He also shared photos of Barbara Ann Miller, Mahalia Catherine Miller, Joshua Douglas Miller, Frances Douglas Goble, and the D. J. Fulbright Family.  Barbara Ann, Mahalia and Joshua were children of Jacob Miller

Most of my work this year in the Johnson line was with the Fink and Hamilton lineage.  Richard Roberts of Ferndale, CA, shared data that he had been collecting for many years - including "The Hamilton Letters" - written during the 1800s.  If you've not checked them out, you really should.  Pages were created for numerous Finks and Hamilton ancestors.  Randy Cook shared a copy of David Fink's claim for a Revolutionary War pension

Madeline Hallman Lynch contacted me and donated additional descendancy information for her branch of the Sherrill family.  Madeline lives in Utah and works on that line.

FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

Dianne Wilson Elliott (granddaughter of Cordie Loftin Wilson) has written a mystery romance novel entitled Forever And Beyond.  Dianne lives with her husband, Wade; her mother, Mildred; and a spoiled, long-haired dachshund named Rusty in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. When she isn’t writing, Dianne enjoys painting, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. This is her debut novel.

Katie O’Malley is a free-spirited, artsy, red-haired beauty who is about to graduate from Columbia University. But when her parents, John and Mary O’Malley, die in a tragic plane crash, Katie’s life becomes very complicated. First, she learns the plane crash was no accident; her uncle paid someone to tamper with the fuel gauge. And, she certainly didn’t expect to lose her heart to the handsome young priest, Andrew Jackson, who comforted her during her time of loss and grief. Nor did she expect to have her feelings returned by the good father. A file in her father’s desk reveals the biggest surprise of all. It’s a surprise that rocks Katie’s world and takes her far from the bright lights of New York City to an unknown future on The Outer Banks of North Carolina. As she searches for answers, Katie wonders if her father’s hidden past will be the key to the future she has always longed for. Other uncertainties plague Katie’s future. Will Father Andrew Jackson leave the life of a priest and follow his heart back to her? Or will Katie find a new love in the sleepy little village of Buxton, North Carolina?

I contacted Norm Pence in Westminster, Colorado, who is a 25-Marker Match for the Loftin line (with a variation on one of the markers by two numbers).  Norm shared some basic information about his family and it was added to the DNA Testing page.

I contacted Mary Anne (Butz) McCarty in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, who's brother (Edward) is an exact 12-Marker Match for the Loftin line.  She shared 6 generations of the Butz lineage who came to the US from Germany.  The information can be seen on the DNA Testing page.

The Jewish Roots of our Christian Faith

Our Israeli Folk Dance group has been working on several performance pieces for our Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot Celebrations in September and October.

We continue with the Hebrew Aleph-Bet (ABCs) class.  There are 9 in the class that meets in our home on Friday nights.  All 22 consonants, as well as all the vowel markings, have been learned.  In the last class we'll spend time reading Hebrew.

The Jewish Roots of our Christian Faith

On Saturday, April 2, 2009, the Beit Yeshua (House of Salvation) Jewish Roots group from Lincolnton traveled to Salisbury, NC, to join Beit Shofarot Messianic Congregation and observe Holocaust Memorial Day.  Beit Shofarot had invited 94-year-old Dutch Jewish Holocaust survivor Frieda Roos Van Hessen to share her testimony of how God had miraculously  protected and spared her during Nazi occupied WWII Europe even though many of her family and friends perished.  Prior to the war, Frieda had been a notable concert and opera singer - even supplying the singing voice for the Dutch version of Walt Disney's SNOW WHITE.  To learn more about Frieda or order her book, Life in the Shadow of the Swastika, go to  http://www.friedaslife.com  You can also catch part of her testimony on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmqiwb0QQ9k&feature=related

Shavuot (Pentecost) is a two-day Biblical Festival that occurs in May-June each year.  Shavuot is one of the Springtime harvest festivals that is celebrated each year in Israel and around the world by Jews and Christians.  The 1st Shavuot occurred 50 days after the children of Israel left their Egyptian bondage.  After they crossed the Red Sea Moses went up on Mt. Sianai where God gave him the Torah (the 10 Commandments or 10 Words) carved in stone.  In the Brit Hadasha (New Testament), Yeshua (Jesus) told his disciples to tarry until they were filled with power from on high.  He promised them that He would not leave them alone, but would give them the Ruach Ha Kodesh (the Holy Spirit) to be a Comforter to them.  The New Testament Shavuot of Acts 2 is also remembered as the birth of the "church".

Our Lincoln/Catawba County Jewish Roots group met on Friday, May 29th to celebrate the Biblical Festival of Shavuot, that the scriptures describe in Leviticus 23 as "perpetual", or eternal.

The Jewish Roots of our Christian Faith

I suppose the reason I don't have more information on the "family" this month is because I've been so busy preparing for several Jewish Roots meetings during the month of April.

On Friday, April 10, 2009, we hosted a Passover Seder at Covenant Bible Church in Lincolnton with about 180 in attendance.  It was an absolutely wonderful evening.  If you've never attended a Passover Seder before, you definitely should if you ever have the opportunity.

On Friday, April 24, 2009, we hosted an Evening Honoring Israel & Israel's 61st Birthday at Covenant Bible Church in Lincolnton.  Steve Martin of VISION FOR ISRAEL was the guest speaker.  The evening including teaching, music, Israeli Folk Dance and even some Israeli food.

On Sunday, April 19, 2009, we began a 7 week teaching series at Freedom Church in Lincolnton on Israel, the Biblical Feasts, and What the Church's Relationship With Israel Should Be.

The Setzer Family Reunion for the descendants of Patrick Sylvanus Setzer & Margaret Witherspoon was held Saturday, March 21, 2009, in the East Maiden Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.  A new web page was created with photos from the reunion.

A new web page was created form Marcus Elkanah Setzer (b. 1830) the brother of Patrick Sylvanus Setzer and son of Jacob Lanier Setzer.

I hope to create a page for Henry Theodore Setzer soon and I'll add those photos at that time.

FAMILY: Goble
(Babst/Bobst, Douglas, Faber, Fulbright, Hefner, Meinhert, Miller, Pabst/Bobst, Robinson)

I had a few new leads in the Goble family this month.  I found Beulah Vernesta "Nessie" Johnson's Death Certificate and added it to her web page.  Previously I had not been able to find the 1900 Census.  I finally found the 1900 Census and found Nessie living in Iredell County with her widowed mother (Nancy Johnson) and her brother Henry Pinkney Johnson.  This Census revealed that Nessie (age 14) was living next door to Chrales "Charlie" Johnson (age 33), whom she would soon marry.  The obituary was added to the web page of J. C. Goble - the son of Martin Luther Goble & Nessie Johnson Goble.

FAMILY: Johnson

I finished up my research on the FINK family as the beginning of the month.  A new page was added for Arthur Burns Fink (b. 1915).

The Jewish Roots of our Christian Faith

On Friday, March 6, 2009, we celebrated the Biblical Festival of PURIM.  Purim is a festival about God's goodness and deliverance.  The festival is mentioned in the book of Esther and recalls God's deliverance of the Jews from the hand of the evil Haman.  The shpiel (Yiddish for "play") for this year was entitled PURIM WARS and was a science-fiction parody based on the book of Esther, but with a STAR WARS theme.

We're currently in the planning & preparation stage for our 8th annual PASSOVER Seder, to be held in the Family Life Center of Covenant Bible Church in Lincolnton, NC, on Friday April 10th at 7:00.  Guests are welcome.  Contact me at 828-241-2233 for more information.

FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

I researched numerous marriage bonds at the Register of Deeds in Lincolnton, NC, but the really old ones are no longer in Lincolnton and have been sent to Raleigh.  I called (and emailed) the Archives & Records Section of the Department of Cultural Resources in Raleigh requesting copies of the following marriage bonds: (1) James Loftin & Susanah Sherrill, m: 27 Dec 1796, (2) Thomas Loftin & Viney Baty/Beatty, m: 22 Apr 1821, (3) Reuben Fisher & Mary Fisher, m. 10 Mar 1822, (4) William Fisher & Jenny Harwell, m: 20 Jun 1796, (5) Eldridge Edward Loftin & Mary Sherrill, m: 19 Dec 1808, and (6) Henderson Loftin & Catherine Edwards, m: 08 Apr 1828.  Those marriage bonds are scanned and added to the appropriate web pages.

James Loftin from Denver, NC, contacted me via email and shared additional information about Thomas Loftin (b. 1798) and his 2nd marriage to Margaret Fisher.  Prior to James' contact, we did not know Margaret's last name. Five additional generations were added below Thomas' son, William A. Loftin, on the Loftin Descendancy Page.

Reid Cranford from Charlotte, NC, and I talked on the phone about the Cranford Family.  He and I plan to get together in the near future and share information.

A link to our Francis Marion McCorkle webpage has been added to the North Carolina Patriots in the Revolutionary War Website, located at  http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncrevwar/patriots.htm

Derick Hartshorn maintains the NC Gen Web Project and has listings for numerous Catawba County Families.  He has added a link to our Loftin Family Descendancy Page (the only Loftin listed on his site).  He has also included a link to our Setzer Family Descendancy Page.  Derick's numerous sites are amazing.  I spent about 6 hours one day just reading on this one: http://www.hartshorn.us

I added a personal account about my car - my 1997 "little red" Miata.  I call it the Incrediable Miata Story.

FAMILY: Setzer
(Aderholdt, Barringer, Bovey, Bushart, Deal, Heavner, Herman, Ikert, Miller, Motz, Rankin,
Witherspoon)

I researched numerous marriage bonds at the Register of Deeds in Lincolnton, NC, but the really old ones are no longer in Lincolnton and have been sent to Raleigh.  I called (and emailed) the Archives & Records Section of the Department of Cultural Resources in Raleigh requesting copies of the following marriage bonds: (1) Jacob Lanier Setzer & Delilah Deal, m: 18 Mar 1829, (2) Miles Rankin Witherspoon & Sarah Elizabeth Aderholdt, m: 11 Nov 1844 and (3) Thomas Wesley Witherspoon & Peggy Margaret Rankin, m: 06 Jun 1801.  Those marriage bonds were scanned and added to the appropriate web pages.

This month has also seen the addition of information on three Setzer family branchs: The Motz Family, The Aderholdt Family and The Pettigrew Family.  Individual pages to these branches include Hans Jacob Motz, Sarah Elizabeth Aderholdt, Jacob Israel Aderholdt and Frederick William Aderholdt.  A particularly interesting read is the Pettigrew Family Sketch written by William Pettigrew (son of James Pettigrew III, b. 1713, Crilly House, Tyrone Co, Ireland).  William gives an interesting account of his father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  I have also added a Pettigrew Family Tree that connects to the Witherspoon, Setzer and Loftin families.

FAMILY: Goble
(Babst/Bobst, Douglas, Faber, Fulbright, Hefner, Meinhert, Miller, Pabst/Bobst, Robinson)

Nothing new this month.

FAMILY: Johnson
(Corzine, Fink, Hamilton, Kaiser, Leslie, Lewis, Moore, Sherrill, Upright, Wilkinson)

I've spent "hours" doing internet research on the Fink family and finally came up with some information in the Statesville LANDMARK - a Newspaper from the 1800s.  Through Census research, I found the names and birth dates of Daniel Fink (b. Abt. 1806) & Elizabeth (Unknown)'s children.  This information has been added to the Fink Descendancy page, as well as Daniel Fink's page.  Information about David Alexander Fink, Moses David Fink, Daniel Monrow Fink, Jacob Henry Fink, Sophia C. Fink and Susanah L. Fink's families has also been added to the Descendancy page.

Additional information about the Sherrill's who served during the Civil War in NC has been added to the Civil War Page.

The Jewish Roots of our Christian Faith

Genealogy is not my only interest.  I've decided to include this section in the "NEWS" section, although this is more of a personal interest than a Genealogy one.  In addition to this GENEALOGY website, I also maintain a JEWISH ROOTS website that deals with everything from Israeli Folk Dance and Israel, to the Biblical Festivals mentioned in Leviticus 23 (as well as all through the New Testament).  Jesus was "Jewish", and His Hebrew name was Yeshua.  He lived a Jewish life and observed all of the Biblical Festivals.  Sadly, most of the church has no knowledge concerning this part of the scripture.

Purim (the Feast of Esther) is the first Festival we'll observe in 2009.  It is based on the book of Esther and occurs on March 10 - 11, 2009.  Carolyn & I attend Covenant Bible Church in Lincolnton.  Covenant is an Interdenominational Church with 500+ members.  We also co-lead a "Jewish Roots" home group that is associated with Covenant.  We celebrate all the Festivals in the Family Life Center at Covenant each year.  Part of the Purim Celebration is to perform a Purim Schpiel (A comedic Purim play).

I've actually written two plays that are posted on the Jewish Roots website and each year I get several requests for permission to use my play.  This year I've receive a request from a Jewish Rabbi/Chaplain who is in the USAF and stationed in Iraq, for permission to use the play with her group.  That's really cool!  All the various "Jewish Roots" web pages are photo intense so you can see what's happening.

I've also been contacted by a Reformed Jewish Assembly in Lancaster, CA, requesting permission to use the play.

Want to take a look?  I have two Purim plays that are currently available.  (1) The Traditional One, and (2) Purim Wars (a "Star Wars/Sci-Fi Parody)

Why Jewish Roots?  As I said earlier, Jesus/Yeshua was Jewish.  About 99% of the Bible was written by Jews.  Romans 9-11 says that God's not broken covenant with the Jews.  It says we (a wild olive branch) have been grafted in the natural branch.  Scripture tells us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6-7) - it tells us that God has given the Jews a Divine promise to the land of Israel (Genesis 15:18-21) - it further says that salvation has come to us through the Jews (John 4:22).  Genesis 12:1-3 says that God will bless those who bless Israel and curse those who curse Israel.  Genesis 17:7-8 says that the covenant that God has with Israel is an "everlasting" covenant.  Genesis 22:17-18 says that through the seed of Abraham (the Jews), all the world will be blessed.  Isaiah 14:1 says that God will "again" place the Jews in their land, and the stranger (Gentiles) will cleave to them.  The scripture further says that together Jew & Gentile compose "one new man". Ephesians 2:14-15

2009 January

Web Stats for January

A few months back my son, Philip, installed a program on my computer called "Web Statistics" that lets me monitor visits to my Family Genealogy website.  Weekends and holidays are the most popular times when folks are reading up on the latest family history.  For the month of January the website had 150 visitors on Martin Luther King Day (19 Jan 2009), when most were out of work.

For 2008, there were over 11,000 unique visits, with December having the largest number of visitors (1285).  I taught Math for 30 years, so numbers and statistics always fascinate me.

FAMILY: Loftin
(Beatty, Corzine, Cranford, Fisher, Givens, Harwell, Kaiser, Lanier, Lomax, McCorkle, Rudisill, Sherrill, Upright, Washington, Work)

During January I added marriage licenses for Zettie Wilson Loftin (Beatty), Frances Ivey Loftin (Drum), Charlie Roosevelt Loftin, Mike Whitener Loftin, James Edmund Loftin, Arthur Lee Loftin, Oliver Cromwell Loftin and Washington Lafayette Loftin to their respective pages.

I managed to contact Ron Loftin, in Conroe, Texas, and had several enjoyable emails.  I also managed to get a copy of the book, THE LOFTIN CHRONICLES, by Don Loftin.  The book provided possible origins of the Loftin name.

Frank Butler, of Charleston, SC, contacted me with information about his branch of the Loftin family.  He descends from Elizabeth Loftin and James Edwards.  Elizabeth was a sister to Thomas Loftin and daughter of James Loftin and Susannah Sherrill.

FAMILY: Setzer
(Aderholdt, Barringer, Bovey, Bushart, Deal, Heavner, Herman, Ikert, Miller, Motz, Rankin,
Witherspoon)

Tina Evans contacted me with information concerning the Setzer Descendancy from Jacob Setzer, Sr. to Jacob Setzer II, to Christopher Setzer, to Thomas R. Setzer, to David Christopher Setzer, to David Ogden Setzer, to George Setzer.  This lineage, as well as spouses and some children, has been added to the Seter Family Descendancy.

Jim Gautsch, from Wisconsin, contacted me with information in the Ikert family.  The Setzer family connects to the Ikerts through Jacob Lanier Setzer's wife, Delilah Deal.  I hope to have more of his information posted in the near future.

Christy Yarnell, from Pullman, Washington, contacted me with information about her branch of the Barringer family.  John Setzer I married Catherine Bushart Barringer.  Like us, Christy descends from Matthias Barringer and Margaret Bushart.

Elaine Clayton contacted me and shared information from her branch of the Barringer family tree.  She descends from John Paul Barringer (b. 22 Jun 1752) and Christina Catrina Killiam.  Elaine commented on the number of Barringer and Setzer names that are also traditional Jewish names and asked if I was aware of any Jewish ancestry.

FAMILY: Goble
(Babst/Bobst, Douglas, Faber, Fulbright, Hefner, Meinhert, Miller, Pabst/Bobst, Robinson)

FAMILY: Johnson
(Corzine, Fink, Hamilton, Kaiser, Leslie, Lewis, Moore, Sherrill, Upright, Wilkinson)

Randy Cook shared a copy of David Fink's claim for a Revolutionary War pension.  The papers also include the name of David's children and his personal property and belongings at the time.

I contacted Nancy Ratay asking if she could help me find the father of Daniel Fink of Iredell County, NC.  It just so happened that she was aware of a David Fink who had served in the Revolutionary War in the German Regiment in Pennsylvania.  After the war, he and his family settled in Cabarrus County, NC.

Sherry Atwood contacted me and had information on the lineage from Uriah Sherrill and Judith Lewis.  I hope to get this data added to the Lewis or Sherrill Descendancy soon.

Richard Roberts, from Ferndale, California, contacted me and shared 200 Years of Hamilton Letters.  These letters are absolutely wonderful and well worth reading.

If you have additional photos of the family that you'd think others would enjoy seeing on the website, let me know.

A special thanks to those who continue to provide photos and information.
