At an early age, he (Thomas Aderholt Witherspoon) became a blacksmith apprentice at the shop of Miles Wike, near Balls Creek (in Catawba County, North Carolina).  From a yearly compensation of room, board and fifty dollars, he was able to save money, and in 1874, opened his own blacksmith shop in Hickory, a trade he followed for more than 60 years.  For the greater part of that time his shop was located in a small building on Fourteenth Street, adjacent to the old Abernethy Stables.

11. Find-A-Grave lists her name as "Florence Arkansas Witherspoon".

The Death Certificate of Thomas & Florancis' son, Charles Edward Witherspoon, lists his mother's name as Florancis Miller.  This is the version of her name I have used on this web page since so many of the other spellings were so similar.

Florancis Arkansas Miller Witherspoon died 31 Oct 1942 in Hickory, Catawba County, NC, at the age of 85.  The Death Certificate lists the cause of death as "Chronic Myocarditis" (inflammation of the heart muscle) and "Arteriosclerosis" (the hardening of the wall of the arteries of the heart).  Her parents are listed as Joel Miller and Elizabeth Bolch.  Her name is spelled as "Florances Arkansas Witherspoon".
