The Pettigrew Family
Name Origin: FRANCE, SCOTLAND, IRELAND, ENGLAND
The name Pettigrew comes from the ancient Norman culture that was established in Britain after the Conquest of 1066. It was a name for a "small man". The name originally derived from the Old French words "petit" meaning "small or little" and "cru" meaning "growth". Our branch of the family seems to have been in France, Scotland and Ireland before coming to America. At present our most dissonant Pettigrew ancestor was James Louis Petigru (b. 1584, France). The Pettigrew family connects with the Loftins and Setzers when Martha Pettigrew married John Witherspoon.
Even though there are numerous Pettigrews in North Carolina, the states with the largest number of Pettigrews are Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, South Carolina and Texas. James Pettigrew II (b. 1713) Immigrated from Ireland to the US
