Died:  19 Apr 1790, Wilkes County, North Carolina

 

Thomas Wesley Witherspoon, Sr. was born 17 January 1747/49 in Pennsylvania.  He was the first child born to John Witherspoon (b. 1726) and Martha Pettigrew. There are some who believe that this Thomas Witherspoon did not have "Wesley" as his middle name.

 
Thomas, Sr. married Sarah "Sallie" Howard, the daughter of John Howard, in 13 Sept 1777.  She was born 02 Apr 1761 in Rowan County, North Carolina.  He was about 29 and she was 16.

Thomas was born in PA, Jan 17, 1748, married Sept 13, 1777 to Sallie Howard (1761 - 1790) of Rowan County, NC; daughter of John and Nancy Howard; she died April 14th and he the 19th of April, 1790, during an epidemic of French measles.  All of the children, after the death of their parents, lived with their grand mother, Martha (Pettigrew) Witherspoon until her death in April 1810, when the family scattered (Rev. Dr. W. B. Witherspoon letter of 28 March 1934) Thomas was an elder brother of Captain David Witherspoon (1758 - 1828), and his daughter went to Tennessee; where they settled on Duck River and many of their descendants still live in that vicinity; Dorcas (1785 - ????) became the wife of Matthew Harberson before leaving NC, who became the father of Charles Wesley and Dr. John Alexander of Nashville, TN.  Both are buried in the family burial ground near Kings Creek.  His will was probated July 1790, Book No.1, Page 280, North Wilkesboro, NC.

 
     
 
 
Thomas' wife, Sarah/Sallie, died 14 Apr 1790 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, during an epidemic of French measles.  She was 29.  Thomas died a few days later on 19 Apr 1790 at the age of 43.

The Last Will & Testament of Thomas Witherspoon (Sr)    July Term 1790

 

In the Name of God, Amen - I Thomas Witherspoon (Sr) of Wilkes County and State of North Carolina being of a Low state of Health in Body  but  of  sound  understanding and memory; calling to mind the shortness of Life and certainty of Death do constitute this my Last Will and Testament and do desire it to be Record by all men as such.

Imprimis I Bequeath my soul to God who gave it and my body To be buried at the Discretion of my Executors and after all my just debts is paid, it is my will and desire that my Earthly Estate which it has pleased God to bless me with be divided Amongst my five children in the following manner.

Imprimis to my four well beloved sons appd. John, Joshua, Westley & David Witherspoon.  I Will & Bequeath all my Land, Both Improved an unimproved to be divided Equally Among my four sons appd. in the following manner.  That is to say it is my desire that my lands be rented out to some carefull industrious man for a small term of years At a time in such manner as for the Tennant to Improve The Lands & the Rents after paying the tax of the Land to go to the support of my four sons appd.  It further is my Desire that when my sons become of age that the Lands be Divided among them as they become of age by Lott agreeable To Quantity and Quality.
 

Imprimis to my well beloved daughter Dorcus I will & Bequeath my Negro girl Dinah, also one feather bed And furniture, one side saddle & her departed Mothers wearing apparel.

Imprimis to my four well beloved sons John, Joshua, Westley & David Witherspoon, I will and Bequeath all my Personal estate which is not already bequeathed such as Horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, Household furniture & plantation Utentials, Debt Due as well as Bills & Bonds together with every Part & parcel of my Estate to be Equally divided among them.  It further is my will and desire that the Rents of the Land appd., the use of the Negro Girl Dinah Bequeath to my Daughter also the use & increase of all my personal estate to go to the maintaining and Schooling of my five well beloved Children appd.  It further is my will and desire that All my personal estate be valued by two or three Juditious & honest Free holders Whome the Honorable Court of this county may see cause to appoint and That a Just Inventory be made out by them returnable To the court and that my Executers give bond security For the Delivery of such Estate in such  this do equal justice to my children appd. that is to John, Joshua, Westley & David Witherspoon and that benefits Increase & profits of such estate go to the support Of my children which I wish to be Raised in a Christian manner.

It further is my will and desire that my Beloved Brother James Witherspoon and trusty and well beloved Friend Benjamin Howard be Executors to this my Last Will and Testament.  In witness whereof I have here Unto set my hand and affixed my seal this 10th day Of April 1790.

Witherspoon Family Cemetery

 

The Witherspoon Family Cemetery, on a hill, off Old Grandin Road, King's Creek, NC

 
The cemetery is on Grandin Road.  From Lenoir, follow Route 18, north toward Wilkesboro.  Go about 10 miles to King's Creek School (on right).  Pass Wheelings Store (on left).  Turn Left on Grandin Road.  Go about 2.7 miles, cemetery is on the right, up on the hill.  Just past the cemetery is a trailer where Gary Sherrill lives.  The property is owned by Mrs. Peggy Broyhill (a Witherspoon descendant).
