Charlie
Roosevelt Loftin was born 22 Oct 1905 in Catawba County, NC.
He was the first child born to
Alonzo Lester Loftin and
Ida
Lillian Setzer. Alonzo was a staunch Republican, so when
his son was born, Alonzo decided Charlie had to have "Roosevelt"
as his middle name. Charlie was infant baptized at the
Catawba Methodist Church on 25 Oct 1906. |

In time Charlie married Edna Salina Jones. Edna was born 16 Sep
1905. |

The 1940 Census shows Charlie and Edna living on Setzer Road in
Catawba County, NC, on a farm that they owned. The value
of the house was $200. Charlie and Edna were 34 years old -
Paul was 13 - and Louise was 11. The Census shows that the
highest level of education for Charlie was 7th grade, but for
Edna it was the 2nd year of High School. Paul was
currently in the 6th grade and Louise was in the 5th grade.
Charlie worked long hours (60) on the farm and reported his
income for 1939 as $0. |

Charlie's
father, Alonzo, owned much property in the area of the family
home on Sherrills Ford Rd. and E. Bandys Rd. Alonzo owned and
operated Loftin’s Fish Lakes and the family would have big
“get-togethers” there. During the depression,
Alonzo lost the
property to Kannie (Candes) Witherspoon Shufford.
Charlie worked
the field near the ponds and eventually was able to purchase the
lakes and surrounding property on E. Bandy’s Rd. for himself.

Charlie died 30 Sep 1988. Edna died 19 Nov 2001.
They are buried at Mathis Chapel Baptist Church in Catawba
County, NC. |
