The Census also states that neither Rufus nor his father would read or write.

They were living in the Taylorsville Township of Alexander County. The Census states that Martha was born in 1845 and that she had been married for 25 years. There were two of their daughters still living with them - Laura and Maggie. The Census says that Laura had been married for 3 years, but there is no explanation of why she was living in the family home or where her husband was. The Census does show her last name as Dagenhart - and not Hefner - so this must be a mistake. Martha's mother, Evie Goble age 80, and spinster sister, Delilah age 55, were also living with Rufus and Martha.
