The 1860 Catawba County Census shows Mary (Frances), age 5, living at home with her parents, (James) Franklin & Elizabeth, as well as her other five siblings.

Mary Frances' father, James Franklin Loftin, entered the Civil War in May of 1864 and served with the 49th Reg. of NC troops.  He was killed-in-action while serving in 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, VA.  She would have been 9 years old at the time.

The 1870 Catawba County Census shows that Mary Frances was still living and working on the family farm with her mother, Frances Elizabeth, and four of her brothers: Alexander, James, Lafayette and Oliver.  Her brother Alonzo apparently died between 1860 and 1870.  Mary Frances' big sister, Harriet Jone, and her husband, Gil McKinnis, lived nearby.
