Lawrence Washington (1500 - 1584)

Born: Abt. 1500, Sulgrave,Northampton,ENGLAND

Died:  19 Feb 1583, Sulgrave,Northampton,ENGLAND

Lawrence Washington was born about 1500.  He was the son of John Washington (b. 1478, d. 1520) and Margaret Kytson of Warton Hall.

Lawrence married Anne Aimee Pargiter (b. 1504, d. 07 Oct 1564) in 1538 in Sulgrave, England.  Anne was the daughter of Robert Pargiter and Anne Knight and the widow of Thomson of Greatworth.

Lawrence Washington was a wealthy wool merchant and became Mayor of Northampton.  It was Lawrence who first settled at Sulgrave with his second wife Aimee, the third daughter of Robert Pargiter of Greatworth, near Sulgrave.  Lawrence's former wife, Elizabeth, had died childless.  Lawrence purchased Sulgrave from King Henry VIII in 1539.

Sulgrave Manor is located near the town of Banbury.  Sulgrave was a quiet rural town.  There was a brass plate, on a stone slab and effigy, in Sulgrave showing "Lawrence Wasshington, Gent., and Anne his wife, their four sons and eleven daughters."  This land was given to him in1538, after the dissolution of the priories by Henry VIII.  Sulgrave Manor was completed (or restored) by Lawrence Washington in 1560.  The Washington family owned Sulgrave Manor for 120 years after George Washington's grandfather emigrated to Virginia in 1656, and for 216 years total.

Lawrence & Aimee's son, Lawrence, married  wealthy widow Mary Argall and became the stepfather of her son, Samuel Argall.  Samuel became a prominent Sea captain based at Jamestown in Virginia. In 1613 he sailed to trade with the Potomac and found Pocohontas.

He kidnapped Pocohontas and sailed back to Jamestown where she was held in captivity. The famous story then began with her adopting Christianity and marrying John Rolfe before traveling back to England with her new husband in Samuel Argall's boat. sadly she died in England aged 21 but has become a heroine in her country.  Samuel was an unpopular Deputy Governor of Virginia from 1617 to 1619 before he returned to the sea and died at sea in 1626 ending the Washington families first experience in America.
